This is another interesting work by Douglas Baker. In it are a couple of concepts that i hadn't encountered before, and that hence enriched my knowledge on the subject. Said this, I found this book missing bits and pieces, and stylistically poorly executed.
Baker here continually refers to other works by him (in particular 'the Jewel in the Lotus'), forcing the reader to move on to that work and to make too many mental notes. This makes me assume that it would have perhaps been a more appropriate task to integrate the two books, for a clearer understanding of the topics presented. Ultimately i found section IV fruitless, where instead i would have loved to learn more techniques. Said techniques are definitely available from other sources: even just recalling basic exercises found in the occult tradition and taught by writers such as the learned Jean Dubuis, would prove invaluable to readers interested in a more in depth approach to meditation. On this line, i found Baker's 'Esoteric Anatomy' books to be more insightful than this reviewed work.

Skeptic

This book is negative & redundant at times. I believe most everything about Yoko Ono. How John could not see beyond this gold digging narcissistic fool i do not know. Its beyond comprehension. She systematically goes through one man after the other to increase her notoriety & wealth. Her art always fell short of any delivery. It was fake & unimpressive. That i knew before i read this book. And at the same time she impresses John as a she man. As he said like talking to a man but a womans body. John was a violent man with demons he spent his while life trying to extinguish with drugs & material wealth. It always brought him more pain. The debths of his angst is expressed in depth in this book. The question is how much can be believed. ! Theres alot of truth here but the bleak nature of the entire book left me sad for his lost life thinking had he lived he couldhave escaped his pain & the talons of YoKo Ono. She lives on with her lies. Still using Johns name to make money. The MYTH of John & Yoko was clear to me before i read this book. It really made it clear what she was & how John was & the depths of his suffering.

I've owned this book for years and have read it through several times. When I first read it years ago I thought it was amazing but too negative. Out of the blue I got interested in the Beatles again and got "Let it be...naked" and then "Revolver" and then "Beatles for Sale." All excellent and I would recommend naked over the original. To me the Beatles were the most important people culturally from the sixties and Lennon created the Beatles. Listening to full albums of the early records Lennon is in charge and was the guiding spirit in the band. (not to take anything away from McCartney, who wrote masterpiece after masterpiece).

While recently re-reading this book I came to see this as one of the best biographys ever written. Very much worthy of Lennon's importance. Warts and all, it made Lennon an even more fascinating figure. There are complements scattered in the book, it is just some of the revelations over shadow them. (one reviewer said at times Goldman would write about how witty, brilliant etc. Lennon was, then how zombie like etc., but Lennon was one of the biggest substance abusers of the period. Everyone thinks of him as being a pot smoking acid head flower child but he was also quite a heroin addict etc.

Anyway, older when re - reading this book, and more objective, I came away accepting and acknowledging some of the negative points but also thinking Lennon was one the most fascinating characters ever. (I also think I understand Yoko better and she too is a very interesting person.)

About the Author
Nancy Nici Mare received an MA in Applied Linguistics from CUNY Queens College, where she is an instructor at the English Language Institute. In addition to teaching all ESL skills, including reading, writing, speaking and listening, to students ranging from beginners to advanced, she has also served as a master teacher to many students in the practicum class in the MA Applied Linguistics program at QC. Recently, she developed an online advanced ESL writing course, which she subsequently taught to students in Vietnam. She is one of the two authors of the Reading for Today series that includes Themes, Insights, Issues, Concepts and Topics.

Lorraine C. Smith has taught ESL for over 30 years. She has also taught TESOL Methods and Research courses at the graduate level. She has presented for 20 years at local, national, and international TESOL conferences. She holds Masters degrees in Linguistics and in TESOL, and earned her doctorate in Curriculum and Teaching at Teachers College Columbia University. In addition to coauthoring the Reading for Today series, she has written other ESL textbooks, journal articles and book chapters. She is currently the Associate Director of the English Language Institute at Queens College of the City University of New York.

Solid Reader for Upper Level ESL Classes

I used this text in an advanced ESL community college class. The texts are high interest and include appropriately challenging vocabulary, reading and writing/conversation extension exercises. My only complaint would be the length; I wish it had a few more chapters. Also the cost is a bit high, given the slim size of the text. Otherwise, I highly recommend it.

Terrific book for EL students

I purchased this book to use in an advanced English learners classroom. I'm pleased with the layout and content. Each chapter has a reading based on a theme. There are pre-reading, skimming, and paraphrasing exercises, sections for dictionary using skills, word forms, short essay questions, a quiz, and more. It's an appropriate level for my class, and we will get a lot of use out of the exercises. It arrived quickly from the seller and in great condition.

About the Author
Linda M. Heywood is Professor of African American Studies and History at Boston University. She is also W. E. B. DuBois Fellow at Harvard University and formerly a Whiting Fellow at Columbia University as well as Professor of History at Howard University and Cleveland State University. She is the author of Contested Power in Angola (1999) and editor of Central Africans and Cultural Transformations in the American Diaspora (2001). Professor Heywood has published in the Journal of African History, Journal of Modern African Studies, Journal of Southern African Studies and Slavery and Abolition.

John K. Thornton is Professor of African American Studies and History at Boston University. He is also W. E. B. DuBois Fellow at Harvard University and formerly Carter Woodson Fellow at the University of Virginia, as well as Professor of History at Millersville University and Allegheny College. He is a former Lecturer at the University of Zambia. He is author of The Kingdom of Kongo: Civil War and Transition, 1641-1718 (1983), African and Africans in the Making of the Atlantic World, 1400-1800, 2nd edition (1998), The Kongolese Saint Anthony: Dona Beatriz Kimpa Vita and the Antonian Movement, 1684-1706 (1998), and Warfare in Atlantic Africa (1999). He has published in, among other journals, The Journal of African History, History in Africa, Cahiers d'etudes africaines, William and Mary Quarterly, American Historical Review, The Americas and the International Journal of African Historical Studies.

Outstanding!

Excellent study of the roots of the Charter Generation of African-American slaves. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the history of slavery, of European-African interactions in the Colonial period, or in the origins of the various so-called "tri-racial isolate" groups of the Eastern United States, such as the Melungeons, Lumbees, etc. It expands upon and fine tunes Ira Berlin's conception of the "Atlantic Creole" culture of the first Africans brought to North America in the seventeenth century.

How Atlantic Creoles influenced the creation of a new world

If you have any interest in the history of European colonies in the Americas this book is for you. For those who have a particular interest in the history of millions of Africans exported to the Americas and their specific origins and how they contributed to the formation of the Creole and African American culture we know today you will hardly find anything close to this in terms of quality.

I am from Angola and my country has been the main source of African slaves during the Atlantic Slave trade (more than modern day Ghana and Nigeria combined). For those with some knowledge it’s pretty visible the influence of Angola, Kingdom of Kongo (which was mostly locaded in Angola, the capital town Mbanza Congo is still a provincial capital in Angola) and Central Africans in general, but for some reason I cannot explain, during 20th century many people reduced the African influence in the so called New World to Yoruba speaking people from Nigeria and partly peole from Benin and Sierra Leone but professors Heywood and Thornton work backs what I could see with my eyes when I visited Cuba, Brazil and even the United States, the Angolan slaves are founders of the British and Ducth colonies in north America and are a major source of Afro-American practices still alive today.

This book by Heywood and Thornton is really a great start for students who are planning on researching the historical roots of the cultural relations between Africa and America. And more, it's a work that follows the most recent debates on cultural transformations sufferd by the Africans subjected to slavery. Sorry for the poor english. Bye.

The Rosicrucians: The History, Mythology and Rituals of an Occult Order

I picked this book up randomly, and discovered a very deep rich history an a very obscure Brotherhood that is still prevelant in many forms (including Scientology). McIntosh has done his homework, and he is very thorough in his explanation. However, I would not recommend this book to anyone that isn't familiar with Esotericim in general, particularly around Germany in the 1500's. McIntosh throws quite a few names around and many, and combined with the many, many facets of Rosicrucianism, can be enough to make your head spin.

This book by somebody named Mac Christie doesn't mention *my* particular Rosicrucian order, which is the only *true* Rosicrucian order, and it doesn't spell the Great Incantation *backwards* in esoterick Latin, and therefore cannot be trusted as a reliable source. Another Luciferic operative from the Sethian Egregore.

A great way to learn more about yourself.

As usual, Joni delivers. I am never disappointed in any of Joni Mayhan's books. Most of them are quick and interesting reads. This book took me a while to get through. I kept book marking and rereading chapters. I kept a notebook handy while i was reading. Dark and Scary Things was full of exercises to help the reader discover their own gifts. While I have always known I do not possess the ability to sense the presence of ghosts or spirits, I didn't realize that I am possibly an empath. This is something that I will look into further.
I find the paranormal a fascinating subject and loved reading about Joni's experiences in her other books. With Dark and Scary things, I learned a great deal about myself.

This book explains the what and why behind supernatural occurrences. One read isn't enough for all the information included. Both an enjoyable and informative read.
