The best book about the future.

Cecil Sanders presents a wonderful account of the amillennial perspective. He plainly shows from the scriptures how the amillennial position is scriptural and correct. At times he compares amillennialism against other well known positions. It is rich with scripture and doctrine, yet easy to read. I recommend this book to everyone.

One of the Best for the Layperson

This is a little book left (to me) by my father, who purchased it on 8Sept1990 (as noted in ink on the bottom back cover). I finally read it this year (2009) and loved it so much I bought a copy for my son. I wish Dr Cecil Sanders had written more books, he had a gift for writing like I suspect he spoke, very kindly, thoroughly and concise. Only 160 pages of text and 4 charts, he makes the position of the Amillennialist clear and understandable without scolding those who have other views. There are other books more in depth, but none go down as sweetly as this one.

Still not convinced......

My friend Barbara has lost a good deal of weight. When I asked her how she did it, (i.e. was she on Atkins?) she recommended several books including "YES, NO, MAYBE" CHRONOBIOTIC NUTRITIONn by Vonn Harting and Bergstrom. (The others were EAT 4 YOUR TYPE and a book on menopause by John Lee.) Now, I'm just a tad past the topic of the latter book, so I did not find much of interest although my daughter who is in the m-zone also recommends it. On the other hand I am as ususal trying to shed a few excess pounds, so am open to new ideas regarding weight.

Marcella Von Harting has a much expertise regarding essential oils which she says can be used to "prevent infection, build immunity, and raise consciousness." As I have personal experience with oils, I know one can benefit from their use. Vonn Harting includes a section on the use of oils, `Nosing Around", in which she links time of day and colors to oil usage. She says oils have different levels of volatility at different times of the day, and "a volatile oil meant for a specific function taken at the wrong time of day goes to other parts of the body and oxidizes and creates free radicals." Heaven forfend, as I use oils for various purposes, I found this section of the book most useful.

Perhaps the time of day that you eat certain foods does affect weight gain. Perhaps the colors you eat (or wear) affect weight gain. I'm trying to keep an open mind.

Truly Different Book on How to Live Christian Faith

This is an easy read of deep understanding requiring a much more serious reflection from the reader about what it means to be and live as a believer in Jesus Christ. Expertly written, expressing the author's understanding of the Christian Faith as far, far more than Jesus as a self-help guru that just happens to be God the Son. The reader will be encouraged to humble one's self to the written Word as a means to casting one's self at the feet of the Incarnate Word of God. This book's real value as a book is that it causes the reader to think seriously and deeply, not about one's own experience, but upon Jesus and the Word of God.

In-depth History of One of Rock's Greatest Groups!

Greg Russo's YARDBIRDS, THE ULTIMATE RAVE-UP is a thorough, entertaining summary of the life and musical times of one of the finest, most creative rock groups of all times. Originally published in 1997, this fifth edition, published by Crossfire Publications, will delight Yardbirds fans of all ages.

Though overshadowed by the Fab Four and the Stones, the Yardbirds - Keith Relf, Chris Dreja, Paul Samwell-Smith, Jim McCarty and Eric Clapton - created some of the finest blues music ever when they burst on the music scene in 1964. Clapton soon left and was replaced by Jeff Beck. Samwell-Smith dropped out later to become a producer. Yet, thanks to the mercurial Beck, the band soared to new heights. Unfortunately, the group lost its mojo thanks, in part, to producers who didn't have a clue about the band's genius. Jimmy Page took Beck's place but the band crashed and burned in 1968.

Russo's book is a worthy tribute to Relf, Dreja, McCarty & Company. His intimate knowledge of the band is evident on every page, providing an up-close-and-personal view of some very talented musicians at work. The book is illustrated throughout with hundreds of vintage and contemporary photographs of the various band members along with cover art, posters, etc.

YARDBIRDS, THE ULTIMATE RAVE-UP is a great companion piece to all the Yardbirds' recorded material. While nothing beats listening to those long-ago classic recordings, Russo's book gives the fans a wider knowledge of and appreciation for the group. I hope Russo does a sequel focusing in greater depth on the music similar to the BEATLES RECORDING SESSIONS book. Highly recommended.

The Ultimate YBs Book !

This book will capture your attention! There is so much information in it and first time too. Especially if you also Love Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and/or Jimmy Page and the other YBs members ,well- there are separate discographies for them as well. I dont even know where to start with this book It has everything. There are no others like it listing first a detailed almost daily history of the band, tour dates, tv appearances discographies (I already mentioned individual members) Lots of photos of the band and memorabilia. Its like 4 books in one. I loved this book so much I purchased a later revised and signed by author copy. Its That good!!! Greg Russo has written liners notes for YB's CDs for a while now, his name (and this book) have been in the credits of many books related to Ybs.

Not perfect, but still valuable

For decades there seemed to be little information about the Yardbirds that was clear and reliable. Greg Russo's book helps to correct much of that. Maybe the best section has to do with the pre-Yardbirds activities of the founding members, and the band's history before Eric Clapton joined. Similarly, the pre-Yardbirds careers of Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page are well-treated. And for the real hard-core fans, Russo has assembled a very extensive discography, and almost impossibly, a list of all gigs from the first club dates to the last ones under the name "Yardbirds" by the band we know as Led Zeppelin.

The book has come in for some criticism for factual errors, and indeed there are a few, but the ones I noted were pretty minor and usually involved ancillary information. For me, there were other things that were more disappointing. Foremost was the hazy treatment of the replacement of Chris Dreja by John Paul Jones. It left me with a number of unanswered questions; too much of this transition is still unclear.

I thought the rather substantial sections on the post-Yardbirds careers of Clapton/Beck/Page were unnecessary, as they're documented much better elsewhere. But having that information about the other members (especially original lead guitarist Tony Topham) is a definite plus. The Box of Frogs and modern Yardbirds sections are welcome, too.

This book is a pretty quick read, and is probably the best available resource until/unless someone else (are you listening, Christopher Hjort?) decides to tackle this admittedly difficult band to chronicle.

So he decided to challenge what was there and to come up with gluten free alternatives to every day/favourite meals that were easy enough for the most basic of cooks (like himself) to make, that didn’t break the bank to do so, but also that would taste awesome too. Never accept poor quality or overpriced substitutes – FREAKS EAT TOO!

This engrossing, informative, and frequently surprising survey of U.S. involvement in the Middle East over the past 230 years is particularly timely. Oren, a frequent contributor to the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and New Republic, illustrates that American interests have frequently combined elements of romanticism, religious fervency, and hardheaded power politics. In the early nineteenth century, President Jefferson, perhaps acting against his own instincts to remain aloof from the affairs of the Old World, sent the infant American navy to confront the Barbary pirates off the coast of North Africa. Like many of our future endeavors in the region, the results were a mixture of success, failure, and farce. Other episodes covered here that are particularly interesting include previously obscure American efforts to locate the source of the Nile and the efforts by American missionaries to convert vast numbers of Ottoman subjects. Somewhat Contrived

I like Michael Oren's book about the 1967 war, and like him in general. Nevertheless, I found this book somewhat contrived. Among other things, Oren claims that the need for the fledging United States to build a navy to defend against the Barbary Pirates was the impetus for the Constitution, and there is a lengthy section on Lawrence Arabia, even though the only connection to America is that Lowell Thomas wrote a book about it. After his detailed review of the war against the pirates, little happens other than an endless litany of Christian missionaries starting in the early 1800's, until British and Americans discovered oil in Arabia in the 20th century.

A history of the founding of Israel and American headaches

Power, Faith, and Fantasy is a strong 4, weak 5 star book. Oren does an excellent job going over the history and bringing events together in a natural way, but Oren really centers his efforts on the founding of Israel and the frustrations of American presidents after that founding in balancing the, often contradictory, interests of oil, fighting the Commies, defense of Israel, and still promoting democracy and human rights in the region (usually in that order).

What I found most interesting was the extent of American travels in the region and our general prestige in the area to a certain extent. The history of educational institutions founded by Americans and the relatively good natured religious missionary presence goes much longer back, essentially to the late 1700s, than I would have thought.

The frequency of minor military excursions into the region I also found fascinating, and was a different aspect of seeing them all compiled in the same book as opposed to reading about them separately. Also interestingly, it is astonishing how quickly the animosity is shifted from the British/French/Imperialists is turned toward the US following the end of WWII and founding of Israel. This is common knowledge almost now, but actually remarkable given our 'footprint' in the region compared to hundred years ago (imagine, a US army occupying Egypt now). While US has certainly had its adventures in the region, they are nothing compared to the European incursions as late as 50 years ago (except Iraq, as it turns out).

I did find the book to be frustrating on some topics though. For example, following the Holocaust there were floods of refugees trying to leave Germany. Oren discusses the challenges in finding homes for them all, but doesn't discuss why the US, considered a favored spot for many Jewish refugees (second only to Palestine), was still under immigration quotas and only allowed in a trickle of all displaced persons needing a new home. This is a big point, and one must wonder what would become of the Zionist movement, and the founding of Israel in particular, if the US were more willing to welcome Jewish displaced persons.

Maps were oddly lacking for a book on the Middle East. There were only 2-3 in the first few pages as reference, and were quickly forgotten. For a region that sees considerable changes in territory and control, sometimes differing from year to year, it was frustrating to not be able to follow changes as closely as I would have liked.

The book largely focuses around Israel, and the founding of it is really seen as a changing point and climax for the book, or at least the event where everything pivots. While not necessarily a bad thing, to title the book "America in the Middle East," and then focus so much on the Zionist movement and Israel, I had to change my expectations for the book. On buying the book, I was hoping to learn more about American involvement in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, etc. There was some of this in there, but it seemed to be of secondary importance to Israel.

In the end, it really is a fantastic book, but left some minor questions that should have been explored by the author but for some reason weren't. But to say it covers all the Middle East is not entirely accurate. There is some discussion, and the last chapters go president by president in interactions with the Mid East, but not in depth (which, come to think of it, even the author admits in the opening chapter).

A full comprehensive, and very interesting account that truly brings the current IS involvement in the Middle East in perspective. Long, sometimes too long in certain discussions, not necessarily always an easy read. But definitely recommended for anyone who wants a good understanding of this often convoluted history and fractured relationship between the US and Middle Eastern societies.

Firoz Verjee is senior research associate at the Institute for Crisis, Disaster & Risk Management at the George Washington University. For more than 16 years he has specialized in the application of remote sensing and GIS, primarily within the fields of disaster risk reduction and humanitarian assistance. Verjee has provided expert services to the U.S. National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, the World Bank Group, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and FOCUS Humanitarian Assistance.

non-working demo disk!!

the 180 day trial version of the software that came with this disk did not work! it is the vital component to even try to learn the curriculum of the book. i spent about 3 days trying to get the disk/software to work, even researched on the net to find a way to make it work. i bought this book and trial software just before leaving the country, knowing i would need it abroad. now, i am in a remote place, with no software that works.

i have never had a problem with ordering from amazon before, but now i am skeptical about their quality of product.

unless someone from Amazon reads this, and emails me to correct the problem, i most likely will never order books or software from them again. amazon owes me a working copy of the software that comes with the book. we'll see if they even read these emails, and care about customer sastifaction.

Comprehensive exercises for real world GIS application

I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to explore applications of GIS analysis in humanitarian assistance, and more broadly in emergency management. I worked through Dr. Verjee's tutorial as part of a graduate level `GIS in emergency response' course. The author provides realistic exercises that allow the user to go beyond the steps of just completing the technical analysis, also requiring him or her to consider legitimate questions about data collection, data accuracy, development of practical solutions and policy, etc. This book does an excellent job of capturing those challenges and forcing the reader to incorporate those and similar issues in drawing final conclusions.

The exercises provided cover a broad range of problems/challenges requiring an equally wide application of geoprocessing tools, and aren't just a repeat of the same few types of analysis. This kept the tutorials both interesting and effective at expanding my GIS skill set. A number of the exercises build on skills and products developed in earlier examples. The step-by-step method of instruction and comprehensiveness of the exercises, from data research and collection through final map development, makes the skills learned easily transferrable to real world GIS challenges in the field of humanitarian assistance (or any field).

If you're new to GIS or unfamiliar with the basic spatial operations in ArcGIS, I would recommend working through this book after or in conjunction with a primer. Prior to using this tutorial, I had taken an "intro to GIS" course, which was more than sufficient preparation. Even where an exercise utilized a spatial analysis tool I had used extensively, applying the already understood analysis in the context of the scenario presented was valuable in building my broader GIS knowledge and my understanding of the GIS challenges unique to humanitarian assistance.

I recommend this book to instructors teaching GIS in the field of emergency management, as well as anyone who wants to expand their understanding of GIS by working through exercises on their own. Even if you are experienced with GIS, the case studies will provide new insights on the many possible applications of the geoprocessing tools covered. This is a book that you can keep around as a useful, quick reference or work through repeatedly to improve on the final map products developed, conclusions drawn, etc.

Real world GIS for humanitarians and others

Dr. Verjee's offering is a solid tutorial with interesting, real world case studies and thoughtful, relevant exercises. While it will be essential reading for those who are seeking knowledge in humanitarian GIS, it may also be an intriguing addition to GIS curriculum that seeks to reinforce a multi-discipline approach and demonstrate it in a motivating and meaningful application. The case studies cover a breadth of issues that would not be found in other specialized tutorials and brings a realism lacking in many technical how-to manuals. I encourage GIS educators to consider this as a secondary text should they want to insert more reality into their programs and demonstrate to their students the use of GIS in critical, life saving work.

Secondarily, as someone who has worked in this field for nearly two decades, this book is a wonderful compilation of case studies that begins to bring the work of many GIS professionals into the public view. Humanitarian GIS experts in the US and around the world, though not as visible as their hands-on counterparts in disaster response, often work just as hard and have significant impact on targeting of aid, effectiveness of operations and general situational awareness. This text communicates the fact that GIS is a humanitarian activity and helps to provide a foundation for professionalisms within this community.

Practically speaking, I used this book as the core curriculum in a graduate level course and found it to be thoughtfully designed and realistic in many ways. Because of this realism, it will require engagement from the instructor to navigate some logistical challenges. Specifically, the text aims to introduce the readers to real-world players and resources through web pages. Obviously, the web can prove to be a moving target and the instructor may need to provide new links as some have recently changed. It is recommended that an instructor run through the exercises prior to assigning them and individual users of the book should be prepared to do some web searching to find the desired resources.

In general, I found the students enjoyed the exercises within the Tutorial as they were concrete and meaningful applications that showed the importance of the tool and approach. First time GIS students had some difficulty following the exercises and I would recommend pairing this book with another tutorial, such as "Getting to Know ArcGIS".

I believe Dr. Verjee has provided an excellent cornerstone of methods and best practices that have been established in humanitarian work. This resource can help provide a baseline of knowledge that can help ensure consistency among those entering the community, who can then direct their energies toward taking the discipline to higher levels.
