Pretty pictures but poor writing/editing!

I bought this book because of the gorgeous cover and the promise of lots of frosting recipes and styling tips. The photos inside are gorgeous, without a doubt, but otherwise the book is lacking. The recipes are very generic and simple (could be found online in a hundred other places) and the styling tips are almost non-existent.

However. the most serious problem is the quantities listed for how much each recipe yields. Did anyone really make these recipes and check the amounts? I can't be sure for every recipe, but there are some that are absolutely wrong. For the "Zesty Lemon" glaze, the ingredients are 1 cup of powdered sugar and 4 tbsp. of lemon juice. Then the next line is "Makes 4 1/2 cups". I don't even have to make the recipe to know that that is not possible!! The problem is repeated for the Peanut Butter Glaze, the Pupcake Frosting, the Vanilla Bean glaze, the Rich Chocolate... and who knows how many others!? This is very disappointing for a nearly $18 frosting recipe book.

Beautiful, but lacking.

I admit, I was so excited when I saw this book pop up for pre-order on Amazon. I do love Courtney's website. Unfortunately, the end result sort of underwhelms me.

When I read a post concerning this book on the author's website, she specifically said that this book was just as much about creative ways to style and serve food as it was about frostings. And indeed, the photos are absolutely GORGEOUS. However, if you're planning on actually learning the tips and tricks she used to make the beautiful desserts in this book, you will be disappointed. There are none. All you truly get are the frosting recipes....and a tiny box called "Garnish It!', which has some extremely basic ideas, like "add chopped nuts."

Perhaps this is my own fault for assuming, but when I read the comments for this book, I expected to have frosting recipes, as well as tips for how to incorporate them into desserts and how to style them to look like the photos. It seems an awful tease to have a photo of a luscious cupcake piled high with hot pink frosting and chocolate glaze, in a beautiful wrapper, but the recipe is ONLY for the glaze!

Maybe we will get lucky and the author will include some real step-by-step instructions on her site. Until then, I will use the frostings on my own desserts (the ones I've tried have been tasty, so at least there's that) and sigh longingly over the photos.

If real food styling instructions had been included, with recipes for desserts to use the frostings on, this would have easily been five stars from me.

I am an avid baker and cook. After receiving and throughly reading this book I found the pictures too be stunning. The recipes are not original at all and can be found on any website. I WAS EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED TO DISCOVER that the book fails to mention the decorating tips used for the frosting displayed in each recipe page. The technquie for achieving the same frosted look was never mentioned either. Why bother photographing beautiful pictures if you are not going to give instruction as the type of frosting tip number or type that was used.

Dont bother buying the book.

Ethnography for Marketers

Ethnography is "hot" right now. Understanding your customer and consumer is trendy. Mariampolski has been conducting and educating people about ethnography long before it was in vogue. This book is a must read for everyone who is even thinking about what the word means. Why? Dr. Mariampolski writes in a most engaging style which makes this "textbook" read easily and enjoyably. He knows what he is talking about since he is one of the most noteworthy marketing ethnographers in the world today. For those of us who are time crunched, reading the first couple of chapters creates enough knowledge that one is no longer asking, what is ethnography? Hy creates the context for truly understanding the goals and differences between ethnography and other qualitative approaches and where this approach has emerged in the world of consumer understanding. For those who want more of a step-by-step, that is part of the book and allows a researcher to have a sense about whether they or their agency are implementing ethnographic principles. Mariampolski's love of educating and engagement with the consumer make this a book for ANYONE who is saying the word - ethnography - a must read and a staple on shelf for researchers and marketers in all fields.

This man is state of the art - and this field of research is growing fast.

Ethnography is about "living with the tribe" and understanding holistically the significance of what they say and do. In recent years since the mid-1990s, this school has grown increasingly attractive for marketers and researchers simply because classic phone surveys and focus groups have not fully explained consumer behaviour. Researchers want, and need, to go deeper.

Here, Hy Mariampolski - who is globally acclaimed in research circles as a challenging, articulate champion of qualitative research - literally writes the book on the art and science of "immersion" amongst the consumer tribes we study.

Thoughtful, practical and above all inspiring - this will help researchers confidently go where too few of us have gone before: into the everyday lives of those once-distant (phone interviews?) respondents. I unreservedly recommend it. This volume has proved an excellent guide for two of my projects already.

This book provides many insights into the entire process of conducting ethnographies and in-field oberservations whether the reader is experienced or not. Backed by case studies and experience, Ethnography for Marketers can be used as a check list, a manual, a sequencer and more. Dr. Mariampolski's insights and clear presentation of "How To" and "How Not To" make for an informative easy read. Additionally, many of the tactics are easily adaptable to any in-field qualitative research in almost any category with any class of trade.

This is a must read for any qualitative researcher.

Noonan (What I Saw at the Revolution), George Bush's most publicized speechwriter, describes her book accurately as "advice and anecdotes about the writing and giving of speeches." Not political speeches, which are probably an art form unto themselves, but the kind of speeches most people are at some time called upon to deliver. Noonan states her advice clearly: No speech should last more than 20 minutes; the text should be written out (no ad-libbing from outlines); humor is essential; read your draft speech aloud (speaking is different from writing); keep sentences short (the audience is hearing it, not reading it). One section deals with the special requirements of writing for other people. Shorter sections deal with situations such as toasts, tributes and eulogies. There are also tips on handling questions, walking up to the platform and meeting the audience afterward. The anecdotes deal chiefly with Noonan's adventures on the political circuit and in the White House with Presidents Reagan and Bush and are the fluffy sort of things the author herself probably uses facing audiences. The advice is practical and fairly obvious, but if speaking in public is indeed most people's Number One Fear, this is a calming, logical and sometimes entertaining guide.

The author includes insightful commentary on Earl Spencer's eulogy for his sister, Princess Diana; President Clinton's oratory, which she faults for its reliance on cliches and for its emphasis on style rather than substance; and President Reagan's skill at using speeches to connect with the public. Drop your dislike of her politics (especially if you're a liberal Democrat). Ignore your instinct to treat this tome as yet another how-to approach to speechifying. Because Noonan, author of What I Saw at the Revolution and former speechwriter for Republican presidents, has bared her soul in an engaging and serious attempt to get all of us "speaking right and speaking simply." Sure, the book is disorganized--and there aren't any outlines or long lists. But what Noonan offers is solid advice, delivered simply. Speeches should last only 20 minutes. Write out your text. Use plain and simple language. Speeches must have content. And in exhorting her readers to do this or that, she inserts personal lessons she has learned, as well as examples from the greatest speakers, including Lincoln, Churchill, Reagan, and, yes, Earl Spencer at Diana's funeral. I love this book

I am a bit disappointed

The rating 'I don't like it' is too harsch but it isn't OK, the next rating. I was looking for a book telling me about the internal operation of a processor. This book tells you but... The author uses an MIPS processor as an example and keeps, throughout the book, completely focussed on this MIPS one. The 6502, 6800 and Pentium have more in common IMHO than these processors with this one. Maybe I will appreciate it after rereading it but my first impression is one of a bit of disappointment.

Ken Goodman's research on learners and language is well known to most educators. In this book, Goodman explores the nature of language and the science of reading. He does not discuss how children learn to read or how reading is taught. He is interested, instead, in the process of reading itself. Goodman emphasizes that reading involves deriving meaning from and making sense of a text. I was particularly caught up in chapter four, "How Proficient Reading Works." Here Goodman stresses that in reading, what you think you see is more important than what your eyes actually pick up. The reader, he says, continually monitors the sense of the text. And as the experiments cited show, efficient readers derive meaning using the least amount of time, energy, and visual input. Goodman's exploration of the nature of language will lead many librarians to think about their own experiences in working with children and the reading process. We need to understand what competent reading and writing is, and build on what children already know. He uses the miscues of real readers reading real texts to inform how about how language works and what strategies developing and fluent readers use. His purpose in this book is to examine that knowledge with teachers so they can understand more precisely what it is their students are learning to do and how best to help them. Goodman's sensible, straightforward look at how reading works as a process makes this book, like his earlier Phonics Phacts, a must for every teacher and interested parent.

What is the Meaning of Sophistry, Paradox, and Illiteracy?

"On Reading" might serve as a provocative introduction to language and linguistic theory for the college student or future teacher. Goodman is in love with his topic and always eager to explain each point so that everyone gets it.

There are, be warned, the descents into grad school blather, as when Goodman makes a careful distinction between effective and efficient reading; between comprehending and comprehension; and struts such pomposities as: "Understanding a language, oral or written, begins with understanding what people are trying to DO through language." Hmmm.

The larger problem is that the book's chief aim is to sell a world-view that lets the illogic of Whole Word appear logical. Goodman's case starts from Piaget's notion that we "construct" meaning. Piaget presumably meant "build," but the sophistical take is that he meant "invent." So the conclusion, you see, is that meaning is not real, is not out there in the world, but must be invented by each of us. Utter, in my opinion, nonsense.

Like Frank Smith, Ken Goodman loves to announce, over and over, this serene non-sequitur: "The sense you make of a text depends on the sense you bring to it....The meaning is never in the language."

Now, where do these pretty little paradoxes go? Try this: "Reading is not first of all about letters or words, but about meaning." Or: "Effective reading, then, is not accurate word recognition; it is getting to meaning." In Goodman's world, you can recognize words and still not know what they mean.

Here's where we end up. We can't decode to sound because sounds are not meaning. But we can't, it appears, truly decode to meaning either, because meaning is not in the words. Meaning is in the minds of the kids. So the best thing is to have all the children hang around in a kind of intellectual la-la land that will mean limited literacy (reading, writing, spelling) even in middle school. That la-la land is known by the name Whole Language.

At the end of the day, when ed school professors declare, "So you see, phonics doesn't work," what could a young teacher in training respond except, "Right! I get it, Whole Word all the way! Thank you, Professor Goodman."

Meanwhile, children taught to read with phonics (which Goodman dismisses as unworkable) routinely learn to read by the age of seven.

The "school" System has a vested interest in the micro-management of learning (to read) and thus grossly mis-applies whatever reasonable thing that comes its way, including the work of Ken Goodman. All bureaucracies have this tendency of micro-management, a stark example of which is the monstrous abuse of Jesus' teachings by the early Catholic Church, for which many people have rejected Jesus' message and humane example, in favor of yet another bureaucratic system of "accounability", namely, metaphysical humanism/secularism.(I don't mean to be controversial; I wish only the very best for people of whatever metaphysical pursuasion). Ken Goodman shows the stable center-position of the nature of reading. But then, because of its pursuasive power, the "school" system uses it to gain tighter control of childrens' learning to read and adults' efforts to help them read. Micro-managing the learning of reading is only as potentially handicapping for the learner as the complexity and the number of the aspects of reading which are being micro-managed. Thus, micro-management of learning phonics (which is only minor one aspect of reading) naturally has less potential for being a handicap for children in learning to read than is the case when a number of aspects of reading are being micro-managed---especially if those aspects are of a high intellectual order. Ken Goodman's argument for whole (holistic) language should be read primary with an interest in what is true of reading, and only secondarily with an interest in the question of reading instruction. To do otherwise only produces absurdities on both sides of the insitutionalized-reading- instruction 'wars': those claiming to favor Goodman's work and who claim to be proponents of whole language, but who miss the real point that Goodman makes and who then grossly mis-apply his work; and those who, largely because of this mis-application and its clearly more horrible consequences, blaim Goodman for that mess and call his argument balony. Many people call themselves Christians too, but, as one bumper-sticker says, "Jesus loves you, but everybody else thinks you're an ______" I hope I don't come across to some people as ranting at them. I only want to make the matter as plain as possible and in a quiet, friendly manner. Unfortunately, to make some crucial points clear sometimes requires giving examples that happen to be emotionally charged for many people. I hope this review encourages everyone to read this book (and every book) by Kenneth Goodman, and that it helps them truly understand the real issue that he addresses. I also recommend the comparable works of Frank Smith, especially his Understanding Reading and The Book of Learning and Forgetting. I appreciate your consideration.
