Robert Fenton and his mother are taken in by the austere Miss Pauline Bunn. He is accompanied by attractive Jane Gilmore, who is believed by Miss Bunn to be a good moral influence on the boy. However, Jane proves to be a minx who teases Robert and leads him on. Jane and her friend Amy Keeler enjoy getting Robert into trouble. Things are not as they seem when their Bible Class teacher finds them in the girls’ toilet together. But Robert is blamed and punished publicly. Jane’s parents are horrified when they catch their daughter and Robert in a state of undress. The errant pair are spanked soundly on their bare buttocks and forbidden to see each other again. After Robert falls ill, he is sent to a Convalescent Home by the local authority. But a mistake is made about his age and he finds himself in a ward where the discipline imposed by the nurses and the toilet regime are more appropriate for younger children. He attempts to escape, but is brought back by the police and chastised in front of the other patients and the Board of Guardians. Eventually Robert succeeds in getting away from Miss Bunn’s tyranny. He becomes a servant to a fading film star and then lands a role in a TV soap opera. But he is still treated like a Very Naughty Boy!

About the Author
Irvin D. Yalom, M.D., is professor emeritus of psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He was the recipient of the 1974 Edward Strecker Award and the 1979 Foundation's Fund Prize in Psychiatry. He is the author of When Nietzche Wept (winner of the 1993 Commonwealth Club gold medal for fiction), Love's Executioner, Every Day Gets a Little Closer (with Ginny Elkin), and the classic textbooks Inpatient Group Psychotherapy and Existential Psychotherapy.

The Group Therapy "Bible"

No lengthy explanation needed here. I am a graduate counseling psychology student with a particular interest and experience in groups. We refer to this particular Yalom book as the group therapy "bible," since it pretty much contains everything you could ever need to know about the basics of running therapy (and even support) groups. This is one of very few books I've had to read for school that I actually couldn't STOP reading--it's that good. My professor for this course has been doing groups for over 20 years and says she still refers back to this book for insight when leading her groups. Also check out Yalom's book on existential therapy! There is some case study overlap with the group book, but it's another favorite. And don't let the size of this book intimidate you. You won't be able to put it down! Yalom is the man . . . Happy reading!

Timeless

Yalom's techniques are timeless, as long as human nature and how it plays out in social interactions transcends time and place. Thus, decades after publication, this book of group therapy lives on, whereas others, more faddish, are either narrowly focused on sufferers of the "disease of the year", or, in the case of "pragmatic", short-term "manual-based" groups which insurance companies favor, assume that all one has to do is give the patient the right recipe and 8 weeks to practice it, and they'll be cured of life-long ingrained pathological behaviors.
Anyone who thinks this book is "out of touch" or demonstrates a lack of empathy by Yalom, probably has a pet style of group therapy, and an axe to grind. Often, seemingly more empathic therapists, run groups in which everyone takes turns getting sympathy, distress is "validated", whereas the patient's contribution to it is ignored, and the premise is that sufferers are misunderstood victims of a neglected disease who are finally in the hands of someone who "gets it". Usually therapists who lead such groups, don't only wish to empathize, but are driven by a wish to feed their own vision of their specialness as the champions of the underdogs.
One of Yalom's greatest contributions is the effectiveness with which he used the group approach to exactly show patients how they cause their own distress--by creating a group atmosphere in which members play out their poor social skills, and get the powerful impact of peer feedback on this. He did so in a way which demonstrated genuine empathy in action: by steering members to identify (and empathize) not only with each others' misery, but with each others' strengths. Sympathy without a kick in the [...], is patronizing, and implies inequality. Sympathy with a kick in the [...] (always best given by peers), is sympathy with belief in your power--this shows respect for all of you, your strengths and your miseries. THIS is empathy. THIS is what empowers group members to overcome their problems. And this truth, will never go out of date.

The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy

This book is one that every graduate student in psychology or beginning therapist should read and have on their shelf. Yalom covers and discusses many important aspects of group therapy such as interpersonal learning, basic thearpist tasks, the idea of working in the here-and-now, therapist transference and transparency, selection of patients, creating a group, problem patients and training the group therapist. Yalom addresses this book to new therapists just starting out, as well as therapists who have been in the field for some time. Yalom presents the new therapist with the many considerations that need to be looked at when forming a group and actually leading a group and he assists the therapists who have been in the field for some time with ways in which to sharpen or improve their skills. Yalom's book appears to be based on highly functioning upper middle class individuals who seem to have good jobs and relationships with their family, friends and spouses. One may gather this assumption from the clinical vignettes and cases that Yalom presents throughout the entire book. Yalom incorporates much of his own practical experience with individuals in the groups that he has led himself, which makes his book feel like you are reading a novel and not a textbook per se. Although Yalom based his book on highly functioning upper middle class individuals, he never addressed the idea of group therapy with children or individuals of different ethnic backgrounds, which seem to be two important areas in today's society, especially within the realm of therapy. Yalom incorporates a rigorous research base within his text, such as discussing some of the current treatment modes and the diagnostic criteria for managed care, which other authors tend to maybe leave out or not touch upon, in essence leading the reader to believe that what Yalom speaks about is true, factual and practical when referring to group therapy. Although Yalom conducted an extensive amount of research on the area of managed care, I do not think it is possible for an individual to be covered by a managed health care or insurance company for a group that is conducted over a one to two year period, as Yalom presents in some of his clinical vignettes. One thing that I think Yalom has done that other authors have not is present the reader with twelve variables that he refers to as "therapeutic factors," (i.e. instillation of hope, universality, altruism, and group cohesiveness) which in essence are the driving tools and elements that assist therapy groups with rectifying individual character distortions. Yalom's book assisted our graduate psychology class in gaining an immense amount of insight and depth into the area of group therapy in such a short amount of time. Yalom's book is one that should be included in all graduate programs in psychology!

As an aspiring teacher, I wanted many questions answered about the Atlantic Slave Trade. I wanted to know why, how, and 'how come' this happened. Dr. Clarke lays out the foundations and reasoing behind the whole thing. The text was easy to read and it kept me wanting more with each turn of the page. In the future I will require my students to read this book. It is informative and straightforward. A must read for EVERYone... of any ethnic background!

Present for an 8 year old

I bought his for my grandson after we saw it a local art/craft supply shop for a much higher price. He likes the drawings and illustrations and is attempting to draw some of the simpler ones. Its a bit more advanced, as the shapes don't start at just a basic stage, but are a bit more complicated from the beginning steps. The book covers some aspects about shading and drawing 3D shapes in the beginning, so we'll keep at it. It's something that he can pick up and stay focused on for an hour or so right now. I'm hoping he'll grow into it and learn more about drawing action figures along the way.

Only flaw here is the end has a little bit of filler, some parts seem lacking, and it seems to explain only what is shown and not any help for your own ideas. It is a good book and only lacks a few things. so its good with little experience and for total newbies.

Set in a fictitious Mediterranean port city, The Opposing Shore is the first-person account of a young aristocrat sent to observe the activities of a naval base. The fort lies at the country's border; at its feet is the bay of Syrtes. Across the bay is territory of the enemy who has, for three hundred years, been at war with the narrator's countrymen; the battle has become a complex, tacit game in which no actions are taken and no peace declared. As the narrator comes to understand, everything depends upon a boundary, unseen but certain, separating the two sides. Besides the narrator there are two other main characters, the dark and laconic captain of the base and a woman whose compex relations to both sides of the war brings the narator deeper into the story's web. For many French readers The Opposing Shore (published as Le rivage des Syrtes ), with its theme of transgressions and boundaries, spoke to the issue of defeat and the desire to fail: a paticularly sensitive motif in postwar French literature. But there is nothing about the novel tying it either to France or to the 1950s; in fact, Gracq's novel, with its elaborate, richly detailed prose, will be of greater interest now than at any point in the last twenty years.

The "opposing shore" is uncivilized Farghestan, which faces decadent Orsenna across the desolate and marshy Bay of Syrtes. Gracq's most famous novel, published in France in 1951, posits a somnolent war of three centuries' duration between the two Mediterranean states. At long last a restless Orsennian opens "one of those doors you pass through in dreams" to provoke his hereditary enemies to action. By novel's end the barbarians are at the gate. Gracq's is a 20th-century vision of decay expressed in the lapidary style of an earlier age, a masterpiece of atmosphere and indirection. Highly recommended for collections of modern literature. The Masterpiece

Until I read this book, Buzzati's "Il deserto dei tartari" was my favorite novel, perhaps my only novel, the only one I cared to keep re-reading through life. This is, remarkably a very similar story about the antichamber of anticipation (rather than "the antichamber of hope" as I called Buzzati's book), but written in a much finer language, by a real writer (Buzzati was a journalist, which made his prose more functional) ; the style is lapidary with remarkable precision; it has texture, wealth of details, and creates a mesmerizing atmosphere. Once you enter it, you are stuck there. I kept telling myself while reading it: "this is the book". It suddenly replaced the "deserto".
A few caveats/comments. First, I read it in the original French Le Rivage des Syrtes (French Edition), not in this English translation, but I doubt that the translator can mess up such a fine style and the imagery. Second, the blurb says Gracq received the Goncourt prize for it. Julien Gracq REFUSED the Goncourt, he despised the Parisian literary circles and by 1951 decided to stay in the margin. He stuck to his publisher Jos� Corti rather than switch to the fancy Gallimard after his success (as Proust did) (or other publishing houses for the fakes and the selfpromoters). Third, this book came out a few years after Buzzati's "deserto", but before Buzzati was translated into French. I wonder if Gracq had heard of the "deserto"; the coincidence is too strong to be ignored.

I read the original in French "Le Rivage des Syrtes", poetic, refined, passionate, with chiselled descriptions of landscapes -Gracq is originally a geographer. The whole novel is permeated with an atmosphere of new age poetic doom. It is related to Dino Buzzati's Desert, and was written in approximately the same time (pre war Europe when barbarians were at the gate) but has more depth, more warmth and wealth of details and emotions. Le Rivage des Syrtes is also a jigsaw of geographical and historical references drawn from Persia, Egypt and Venice - reflecting the neverending conflict between civilisation and barbary. But who is who ? This book deserves more international exposure. Read it, it is mesmerizing. The French editor - Jose Corti - sells it with pages which you have to cut open, adding charme to the journey into Gracq's mythic world.

Majestic in scope and form

Even in translation you can feel the lyrical intensity and beauty of this novel which creates an atmosphere of tension which no reader will forget easily: Aldo, a young nobleman, has had enough of the decadence of his native Vezzano, a fictitious republic modeled on Venice. He has himself posted to a navy base which was once built to defend Vezzano against Farghestan. The two powers are still officially at war, but nothing has actually happened for 300 years. Now, however, there is a growing tension, not just inside Aldo, who dreams of the unknown Farghestan. People in Vezzano seem to be tired of its eternal stability, they long for action...
Most of the novel's plot takes place near the old navy base, which is surrounded by a desert landscape which is described with mesmerizing intensity. Little incidents are building up towards an explosion which is only hinted at in the book. People waiting for something to happen in a more and more uncanny slience - that may remind the reader of the fact that the book was written before and during World War II. The decadence longing for action, danger and change, however, seems to me reminiscent of World War I. This is not a book of easy historical analogy. It is a unique work of art which stands completely on its own.
