All I can say is WOW...

I'm able to find something I heartily disagree with in every childcare or child discipline book I read. Even in my favorites. But I thought my head was going to fall off I nodded so hard while reading this book. I used to hedge daily on discipline worrying I was "hurting" my kids too much when I had to enforce loss of privileges. This book made me see that all consequences are painful...they are supposed to be. But painful and harmful are not the same thing. Just because my child is temporarily unhappy, that doesn't mean she is permanently scarred. All growth is painful. The flip side to the advice is you should balance your enforcement of consequences with empathy, affection, and support. You are neither your child's enemy nor his friend. You are his parent.
I was able to immediately put the good advice to use right away and my family is so much more peaceful! Boundaries really are good for building character, increasing empathy, and as converse as it may sound, strengthening the relationship between you and your children. The authors are both psychotherapists and devout Christians. I thought the Christian bent might annoy me but the scriptures quoted were used sparingly and only enhanced the eloquence and relevance of the text.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to friends and relatives, Christian and secular. Buy this book and you will walk around thinking "I know which boundaries HIS/HER parents didn't enforce as a child." What an enlightening book!

Boundaries With Kids

This book has helped my husband and I to not only be on the same page with our dicipline methods but also to really focus on how our 3 kids behaviors right now in the present will affect their future when they are on their own. It has helped us to set boundaries for them and is also teaching our kids to learn to set firm boundaries on their own with their lives. I had yet to find a book on raising children that is so clear and effective and really guides you through how to be an effective parent for the good of your kids future. I also highly recommend the book "Raising Great Kids" which is by the same authors.

This book changed our lives!

At age 13, nothing had worked. My son was stubborn, uncooperative, lying & lazy - at best. My fiancee threw up his hands in disgust & told me I was on my own with this problem. Reading this book and implementing its contents as I went along, has made all the difference in the world! Seeing all I had done wrong in the past (to help create this monster), and having guidelines to follow to correct the set bad patterns - priceless! The book is written clearly & matter-of-factly. It shows where I contributed to my son's poor behavior. It shows compassion for how difficult it is to change our patterns. This book is worth every penny - worth every moment. I now have a cooperative, responsible, cheerful, loving son! & he has a mom who is firm, loving, and VERY happy!

Many mothers have long suspected that they're getting the short end of the deal--and finally, a highly respected economics journalist proves they're not just griping. Despite all the lip service given to the importance of motherhood, American mothers are not only not paid for all the work they do, but also penalized for it. "The gift of care can be both selfless and exploited," writes Ann Crittenden in this intrepid and groundbreaking work. Motherhood is dangerously undervalued--it's now the single biggest risk factor for poverty in old age. Mothers lose out in forgone income if they stay at home, an inflexible job market makes part-time work scarce or inadequately paid, and in the case of divorce, they're refused family assets by divorce laws that don't count their unpaid work.

Crittenden is fond of pointing out the hypocrisies plaguing America, and one is the belief in a welfare state enabling single mothers. The true welfare state, she says, protects paid workers from unforeseen risks through social security, unemployment insurance, and workman's compensation. Mothers who work part-time or not at all have no such safety net and typically take a nosedive into poverty, along with their children, after divorce or the death of their spouse. Married working moms are also punished--they pay the highest taxes on earned income in America. Crittenden's impassioned argument is based on research in a variety of fields, from economics to child development to demography. She shows how mothers were demoted from an economic asset to dependents, why welfare for only a certain group of mothers bred bitterness among the rest, and why there is currently an exodus of highly trained women from the work force.

Crittenden also travels far and wide for solutions. She finds them not only in such European nations as Sweden--which has abolished child poverty by giving mothers a year's paid leave, cash subsidies, and flexible work schedules--but in the U.S. military, which runs the best subsidized child-care program in the country and knows the value of providing special benefits to those who selflessly serve their country. Ultimately, Crittenden insists, the equality women have been fighting for will only be achieved when mothers are recognized as productive citizens creating a much-needed public good--human capital, or in layman's terms, well-raised children who grow into productive, law abiding citizens (and who pay into social security). This is an admirable--and charged--defense of motherhood, reminding us that unpaid female labor is "the priceless, invisible heart of the economy," and those who engage in this labor deserve the same rights, and the same respect, as other workers. --Lesley Reed

Americans extol motherhood as "the most important job in the world," yet when couples divorce, mothers' and their children's standards of living usually decline precipitously, while fathers' rise. Crittenden, a former economics reporter for the New York Times, lays out the going rate for a woman's time: "$150 an hour or more as a professional, $50 an hour or more in some businesses, $15 an hour or so as a teacher, $5 to $8 an hour as a day-care worker and zero as a mother." Mothers (whose labor is not calculated in any official economic index) have no unemployment insurance to tide them over after divorce, no workers' compensation if they're injured and no Social Security benefits for the work they do, although a housekeeper or nanny paid for the same work would earn such benefits. In a breezy, journalistic style, Crittenden chronicles how the Industrial Revolution created the idea of the "unproductive housewife," how this concept penalizes women after divorce and how tax policies encourage mothers to quit work. Crittenden proposes several remedies, some available in most industrialized countries (paid maternity leave, flexible work hours for parents, universal preschool, free health coverage for children) and others seemingly utopian (Social Security credits for mothering, remedying the tax bias against married working mothers). Crittenden (Killing the Sacred Cows: Bold Ideas for a New Economy) draws upon hundreds of interviews to illustrate the irony of American society's praise of the "profession" of maternal love/care while undervaluing and exploiting mothers. Even as late as 1995, "married working mothers in the United States with children earned half of what their husbands earned." These economic dependents have been paying the dreaded "mommy tax": lost income (more than $1 million) owing to the "wages foregone by the primary parent." Obviously, well-educated, high-income individuals are the most severely penalized. This exemplary book covers the economic myths of motherhood through the stark testimonies of childcare hardships and financial inequality in marriage: "The pay $580 a month was barely enough to cover the bills for a family of four, but not enough for decent day care .Her ex-husband never paid a nickel in child support." Excellent--and Upsetting.

Very disturbing to read this thoroughly researched book and realize that nothing has improved since it was first published or updated. The legislators, state and federal, and judges who need this education are not likely to do so because they prefer their bias.

One of the most important books EVER.

I'd give this book 10 stars if I could. Ann Crittenden does an amazing job arguing for the rights of mothers (and women in general), backed with the kind of evidence you would find in scholarly journals.

More than convincing, and more than infuriating (though you won't want to stop), because with every page you realize that all the things you never really paid attention to or thought was fair (a wife getting less than half of her ex-husband's assets, etc.) are really just another subtle way our current system reinforces women's secondary place in society. I never really considered myself a feminist (even though I have taken numerous courses on sociology, anthro, and the like, and read up quite a bit on the subject) because I thought the idea was more or less outdated. We women have come a long way, have we not? I have certainly been convinced that I was wrong and short-sighted, and that there is another crucial step toward true equality, and other countries already have successful models of it in place (countries whose economies Americans envy - this is not a coincidence). I encourage everyone to read it. It will without a doubt open your eyes, and you will never see motherhood in the same light again.

Anna Nash just out of college lands an interview for Trendsetter Fashion Publishing. On her way up to the interview she meets Kelly. Kelly reaches out a help a girl out because you don’t want to show up at an interview for fashion wearing two mix match shoes. What else could go wrong?
Well let me tell you what else could go wrong! Adam Gerome is what goes wrong. He tall, broad with wide shoulders, full lips to die for and sexiest blue eyes you have seen that makes you feel like a teen with raging hormones all over again and makes you wondering what he got going on under that suit.

Adam Gerome is the CEO of Trendsetter Fashion Publishing thanks to his father. He has to turn this magazine around and grow up or he losing his trust fund. He does not like Anna from the start because he believes she is inexperienced for the job. But being out number he has no choice but to offer Anna the job. But the problem is that not the only thing he wants to offer Anna. You have to read to find out what happens.

I loved Book 1 in this series, and have been waiting for Book 2, a little impatiently because I wanted to find out what happens. I was not disappointed. JS Wilder is one of my new favorite authors. She pulls you into the story, and then will not let you go. This is a wonderful book, and a wonderful series. Once you start reading, you do not want to put it down. I received this book from the author in return for an honest review, and I highly recommend it.

Adam and Anna return from London in bliss until he has to fire her. Anna was set up by someone and can't believe she is being fired when she knows she did not plagiarize her article from Paris Fashion week. Adam tried to get his dad to let Anna stay on at the magazine but he doesn't want to listen. Will they be able to prove who set Anna up and will their romance be able to survive?

Broad Overview of Cruise Life

If you have never taken a cruise and are clueless on what to expect, this book may provide some useful information. The book provides a brief overview to the various cruise lines and offers some general guidance on cruise life. On the downside:

1. The cruise lines are constantly experimenting with alternative dining programs and other innovative programs. It is very easy for a book like this to quickly become out-of-date.
2. Your particular cruise experience will be driven more by the specific cruise line, ship and itinerary than the generic guidance offered in this book.
3. The book is very remedial. If you have never travelled and need an exhaustive 'do list' (when to get your passport, when to pack, what to pack, etc.), you may find this book helpful. I personally found the book over-emphasized travel generic information that I thought was more or less obvious and under-emphasized the cruise-specific experience.
4. There are much better options available in print (more timely and packed with more information). You might try "The Unofficial Guide to Cruises" or the annual Fodor or Berlitz guides. For cruise-line or cruise-ship specific information, I found the various on-line reviews to be much more useful.

A Great Find For All First Cruisers!

A Complete Guide to Planning and Attaining the Perfect Cruise Vacation

I am one of the 40% of people who have not experienced the joy of a cruise, however I heard the rave reviews of friends and family members regarding the cruises they have taken and have always been intrigued. I have to admit, now that I've read this guide, I'm a bit more than intrigued, I have wondered how I can make a cruise a reality for myself and my immediate family as well. From the opening of the first chapter, Mr. Chatfield engages the reader with captivating history about the cruise history industry. History isn't normally something anybody would run to hear, but the presentation of this information is as though he is speaking to you, his good friend.
The ins and outs of the cruise industry and how it affects you as a consumer continue to flow succinctly from chapter to chapter with down to earth advice such as how to choose the cruise that is right for you and your pocket, how the cruise staff works to keep you protected to even more in depth insight of avoiding falling prey to cruise scams. Brian Chatfield pulls out information that I have to admit I hadn't thought about such as securing passports, what types of items are safe to purchase while on your trip, and even how to choose the correct luggage for any flights you may have to take. He gives honest and refreshing information as to the pros and cons of this type of trip and even the cons seem as though they are manageable.
When I saw how many pages this book had, I thought surely such insignificant information could be given in brochure form or most assuredly less than twenty pages, but the immense wealth of information contained in these chapters is like an unearthed treasure trove not to be ignored. Brian Chatfield presents honest tactics to secure your trip with checklists of the steps that need to be taken care of before, after and during your trip. This book comes complete with information on cruise ship industries, both the small and larger ships and the benefits of booking cruises with either. There is contact information and a listing of what you can expect on these particular ships. There are carefully thought out plans to make a cruise happen for every reader presented in a candidly refreshing and easily readable manner.
I always thought "how to" books had a pointless quality, yet after experiencing firsthand mismanagement of situations that could have been alleviated with the proper advisement and planning, the extra help is welcome. Upon completion of this book, I felt prepared to plan and take a relaxing cruise. Out of 5 stars, I give this complete guide 5 stars.

After reading this book, I will consider a cruise

I still love to travel, but I have become disenchanted with plane travel, since the trip is no fun anymore. If you're like me, a cruise might be the option for you--or you may have tried a cruise, loved it and want to explore other cruise options. Your First Cruise lays out many of these options, such as the "megaliners" that most people see the most marketing for, to yacht, freighter and river cruises. I was impressed by how many cruising options--not just the numerous destinations from Aruba to Alaska, or Europe to the Middle East--which according to the book include "more than 60 different lines and 300 ships on the water at any given time" (p.75). There are also plenty of options for shipboard life, from structured to "freestyle" voyages, and you can travel with or without kids, or by theme. According Your First Cruise, you can also take a cruise for less than one thousand dollars--not including your costs to get to the port of departure--which means that a cruise may also be a "budget" holiday.

There are some disadvantages to cruising, since not all are inclusive, and you may need to have cash for "port tax" if it isn't covered in the cost of the cruise. Some off-ship excursions may require you to spend extra money to take part. Illness, often mentioned in the media, is also an issue, but probably just as hazardous as incautiously sampling foreign food, or getting lax about hand washing, while on any trip. Your First Cruise does address these issues and covers others, like packing for your cruise, and the book has a great bibliography that you can use to fill in some of the blanks that remain before you book your trip.

Your First Cruise reminded me that the voyage, not just the destination, should be fun, and a cruise might be one option for a refreshing holiday.

About the Author

Bruce R. Barringer holds the Johnny D. Pope Entrepreneurship Chair in the Department of Entrepreneurship at Oklahoma State University. He earned his PhD from the University of Missouri and his MBA from Iowa State University. His research interests include feasibility analysis, firm growth, corporate entrepreneurship, and the impact of interorganizational relationships on business organizations. Over the years, he has worked with a number of technology-based incubators and student-led entrepreneurship activities and clubs. He serves on the editorial review board of Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice and Journal of Small Business Management. His work has been published in Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Small Business Management, Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship, and Quality Management Journal. Bruce’s outside interests include running, trail biking, and swimming.

Ireland R. Duane is a University Distinguished Professor and holds the Conn Chair in New Ventures Leadership in the Mays Business School, Texas A&M University. Previously, he served on the faculties at University of Richmond, Baylor University, and Oklahoma State University. His research interests include strategic entrepreneurship, corporate entrepreneurship, strategic alliances, and effectively managing organizational resources. Duane’s research has been published in journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Executive, Strategic Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of Management, Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, and Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal among others. He is a co-author of both scholarly books and textbooks, including best-selling strategic management texts. Along with Dr. Mike Morris (Syracuse University), Duane serves as a co-editor for the Prentice Hall Entrepreneurship Series. These books offer in-depth treatments of specific entrepreneurship topics, such as Business Plans for Entrepreneurs (authored by Bruce Barringer). Duane has served or is serving on the editorial review boards for a number of journals, including AMJ, AMR, AME, JOM, JBV, and ETP. He just completed a term as Editor for AMJ. He has completed terms as an associate editor for AME and as a consulting editor for ETP and has served as a guest co-editor for special issues of a number of journals including AMR, AME, and SMJ. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Management and a Fellow of the Strategic Management Society. He is the current Vice President and Program Chair for the Academy of Management. He is the recipient of both teaching and research awards. Duane’s outside interests include running, reading, listening to a variety of music, and playing with his grandson.

Excellent read

Bruce Barringer and company did a magnificant job in writing this textbook. Each chapter was outlined phenomenally and the writing style of each was easy to comprehend. There was a great balance between text and visuals which was really beneficial as well. Also, I really enjoyed the features throughout the text that amplified the ups and downs of real-life business ventures. One final note I'd like to make is how there were a lot of great additional resources (helpful websites, trade show suggestions, businesses that provide specific information) to help in starting a venture.
I don't give 5 stars too often but this textbook deserves it.

Insightful textbook, but very limited use rights on Kindle

This textbook offers insightful information about the entrepreneurial process. While the editing could use some work, the content is relatively current and easy to digest. However, be warned: the Kindle eBook version only allows use on 2 simultaneous devices. Apparently, this is set by the publisher (Prentice Hall). If you are like most modern students with a laptop, tablet, phone, etc., it may be difficult to get the content where you need it when you need it.

Useful but verbose

I bought this book for an entrepreneurship class, and I don't regret using it at all. It had plenty of useful information in it, but just as anything business-related, it's extremely wordy and takes forever to read. I ended up reading the first few sentences of every paragraph rather and getting about the same information out of it.
