  • Conclusion
Topics covered include psychotherapy, hospitalization, medications, cognitive therapy, support groups, relaxation techniques, and aromatherapy. An excerpt from the book: Personality disorders are characterized by certain patterns of behavior that are not functional in the context of the society wherein the individual operates. These traits must have a negative impact on the personal and social aspects of an individual’s life to be classified as a personality disorder. Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) is one such disorder. OCPD is generally defined as a preoccupation with the strict compliance of rigid guidelines and rules of behavior. It affects about 1 in every 100 people and is diagnosed twice as often in males as compared to females. OCPD usually becomes noticeable in early adulthood but it may be developed starting in early childhood to late adolescence.
OCPD is commonly confused with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) due to the similarities in both names and symptoms. However, there are critical differences between OCPD and OCD that distinguishes the former from the latter. For example, an OCD patient is usually aware that the symptoms of their disorder are irrational, whereas those with OCPD often do not. In fact, while an OCD patient often feels a sense of guilt for the difficulties their disorder places on their loved ones and acquaintances, the OCPD patient often sees no problem with their behavior. Rather, OCPD patients believe that other people must conform to their ideas and practices as they do things the ‘correct’ way.

An Excellent Primer on OCPD!
By a friend of Jesus
Mr. Clayton Geoffreys has composed an excellent primer on OCPD for the beginner who is just learning about this mental illness. He presents a combination of scientific findings by acclaimed mental health professionals/researchers (citing Millon, Cloniger, and Beck), well-known to those of us who specialize in OCPD, and the psychological frameworks of understanding developed by these men. He, also, presents numerous helpful examples which clearly illustrate how and why the OCPD person behaves as he or she does. Further, Mr. Geoffrey discusses the overbearing role obsessive-compulsive people have adopted to ‘enforce’ their views and desired way of doing things upon others. Much more description of OCPD’s hallmark characteristics is covered in this 69-page educational piece, as it presents an interesting, easy-to-understand, and well-written overview of this personality disorder topic. A worthwhile starting point in one’s endeavor to learn the basics of this disorder, and how it may be, as the author states, successfully ‘managed’ so that a person may live an enjoyable, satisfying life in spite of OCPD’s challenges. Thank you, Mr. Geoffreys, a work well-done! Sincerely, Mack W. Ethridge, President, New Frontier Health Research, Inc., and author of ‘OCPD’s Only Hope of Psychological Wellness! – The One Scientific Plan Capable of Progressively Freeing the OCPD Bound’, a comprehensive, extensive, in-depth, and user-friendly self-treatment manual to be utilized as a complement to professional care (also presented in two component books, Part 1 and Part 2, available through Amazon.com)

Waste of money.

You're better off chatting with the average person in a bar about it. Worthless. Author has no expertise, many typos and grammatical mistakes.

Decent summary, but sorely lacking in substance and depth.
By Brandon Yates
Psychiatry resident here. The book is adequate if you want to make the diagnosis based on dsm procedures, but my concern is a painful lack of underlying theoretical structure in this book. It reads like a bit of a cookbook, without a lot of supporting details. There are no case examples. There are no proposed theoretical underpinnings, aside from "the person with ocpd is uncomfortable with disorder, and may have had a lot of responsibility heaped upon them as a child. They experience great anxiety when faced with disorder or pressure to compromise their standards, which are often unrealistic and perfectionistic. They might benefit from brief therapy, but this too is unlikely, because they are stubborn." If this synopsis appears satisfying, then look no further. For practitioners interested in a deeper understanding of the disorder, with intent to treat the underlying pathology, consider looking elsewhere. As an aside, there are also a handful of typos in this very short book.

If you are going to nurse your children, get this book for a reference.
By H. S.
This is definitely the best book for nursing moms out there. I had the 6th edition for my own use, and purchased this new 7th edition for my sister-in-law. She says it is helping her. :) I also gave away my old 6th edition copy to another soon-to-be mom for her use. I'd recommend this to any woman who is planning on breastfeeding. The book gives lots of practical tips and troubleshooting, including common issues dealing with pain and latching as well as less-talked about issues like thrush and mastitis. Very useful, very practical. There are also some "survival guides" that break the book up into sections - surviving the first few weeks, surviving the first few months, etc. This is useful because you don't get overwhelmed with everything but just learn what you need to know for the time being.

I would recommend this to any nursing mother
By B. Turner
I am a mother of four, and this is the only parenting book I have ever returned to for advice after the first baby. I give it as a gift at baby showers for all first-time mothers I know, and I have had at least three women thank me many months later for the book that they, too, found so helpful during the early nursing months. I would recommend this to anyone.

First time mom- highly recommended
By Bradley Jobe
As a first time mom, I highly recommend!! In a nutshell, this book is detailed and well organized with information from before birth until weaning.

I bought this book when I was 7 months pregnant and read it all the way through at that time. I felt confident that I understood the science behind breastfeeding but knew that I wouldn't fully grasp the concept until my little one arrived and we were working on mastering breastfeeding together. I browsed the early parts of the book again (mainly the trouble shooting sections of the first days/weeks of breastfeeding) about a week before I gave birth. I took this book to the hospital with me when it was time to meet my baby. I honestly didn't reference it once while I was there, but it was nice to have just in case! The hospital I delivered at has amazing lactation consultants, so I didn't necessarily need the book then but the lactation consultants were impressed by the amount of knowledge I knew/was applying to feeding. It was useful to have already read this book and have some background knowledge on the subject. If your hospital doesn't have LCs, I would definitely recommend taking it with you! Since we have been home from the hospital, and am on my own with mastering feeding, I have used this book many times! As a first time mom I as overly concered with if my baby was getting enough to eat. After relooking at this book, I felt confident she was. I had trouble with engorgement for a few days after my milk came in and successfully navigated through that with the help of this book. I also broke out in hives before my daughter was two weeks old and the drug interaction appendix was extremely helpful when it came to figuring out how I would treat them without affecting baby. Now I'm using it to make sure I am building my supply up (ie storing correctly)before returning to work and will continue to use it as a resource as I navigate back into my work role.

If you are serious about breastfeeding buy this book!

The book will engage students, broaden their imaginations, and guide them in practical application. I plan to use it in my courses and strongly endorse it for every undergraduate course addressing moral development!" - Darcia Narvaez, University of Notre Dame, USA

"Elly Vozzola leads aspiring professionals through the hills and valleys of moral psychology. Hers is a thoughtful survey of the evolution of moral development accompanied by useful triggers for reflection and discussion. As a textbook it is invitingly written and I would warmly commend it to teachers wishing to introduce their students to a sensitive account of moral development." - James Conroy, University of Glasgow, UK

"Moral Development is just the sort of book the field has been waiting for. Clear, accessible, and comprehensive, this text also brings students into the current debates in the field involving neuroscience and evolutionary theory in a clear and lively way." - Sharon Lamb, University of Massachusetts-Boston, USA

"Many students struggle with combining theory and practice and this book serves as a nice model of this important connection. ... [It] provides the reader with concrete examples of how moral development is carried out in therapy. ...This book adds a great deal to the existing literature in the field in an accessible and useful manner." - Stefanie Sinno, Muhlenberg College, USA

"Vozzola has a lively writing style, which students will appreciate ... By using very practical examples and memorable interview quotations, Vozzola provides a very interesting survey of the variety of perspectives and a compelling case for their usefulness. ... I would use and recommend it. I believe it would be very useful to students and teachers." - John R. Snarey, Emory University, USA

"The writing style ... is personal and "down to earth" ... like reading a good novel. ... Most texts review Piaget, Kohlberg and Gilligan. ... This text goes beyond that in terms of both theory and application. ... It is appropriate for graduate and upper division undergraduate courses. ... I would consider adopting this book. ... After providing a theoretical foundation ... the author then looks at the current research from a cultural perspective and ... helps the student apply both theory and research in order to utilize the knowledge learned." - Rebecca J. Glover, University of North Texas, USA

"In this work, Elizabeth Vozzola tackles an important challenge: to provide a balanced, comprehensive review of moral development theory and applications for a broad audience. She is up to the task, building on her decades of experience in the field to offer, in under 200 pages, an integrated and thoughtful outline that will be especially relevant for advanced undergraduate and graduate students preparing for work in education and the helping professions... The book incorporates various integrative and pedagogical features, including interviews with prominent theorists in the field, and well-presented tables that compare and contrast salient features of relevant theories and programmes. This text will also prove useful for those in cognate fields who want a current overview of moral development and education. Vozzola’s writing style is informal and she shares many incidents from her own journey as a teacher in the field... Vozzola’s goal is to prime moral interest and provide tools for the journey. To this end she succeeds admirably, providing a historical sweep of the field of moral development and a sense of its complexity and potential. I suspect the book will prompt many new to the field to rethink their moral assumptions as well as consider further study." -Jay W. Brandenberger, University of Notre Dame, Journal of Moral Education

A very solid manual on moral theories and models
    By Benjamin
This is a 176 page account on different theory and applications of moral development published by Routledge. I use many different Routledge texts that are suitable for under and grad school. Other reviewers have indicated this is only valid for undergrad programs. However, depending on the program, and the student's minor and/or major, this text could fit any of those levels. The text has the ability to present several theories and models in a very summarized fashion (again, only 176 pages), which in my humble opinion is a great advantage. If your major is Philosophy, and you are a grad student, this would not only be the only one book you would be using, anyway, so I still keep the rating high for this and for other reasons. For example, the book contains several figures and tables that complement or/and add meaning to the main text. Table 8.1, as an example, is a two page account of different moral education models.
Those not in the academia world who are interested in moral theories may also benefit from this text. It reads through quite easily, and if you are like me, you will find dozens of lines to be highlighted and enjoyed afterwards such as "there is no tradition of subjecting the religious base of ethics to close critical scrutiny, nor does moral education in Islam have as its goal the development of personal and moral autonomy" (p. 84). Another one: "Hoffman has posited that the biologically pre-attuned human propensity to feel empathic distress at another's distress leads to helping behavior and to observers feeling better after the helping" (p. 143).
This is a paperback edition that costs one third of the hardcover edition, and for all the reasons above, this book deserves a 4.5 stars rating or higher. Highly recommended.

If you buy one textbook or review book on moral development, buy this one.
By E. L. Paluck, PhD, Princeton University
As a university professor teaching undergraduates and graduate students, I have recommended this book to both sets of students. What they (and I) like about the book is Vozzola's up-to-date assessment of all the relevant moral development theories, which are helpfully summarized in tables throughout the book. I have copied out these tables and they serve as the main points that I deliver in lectures or in conversations with students when they ask me about, for example, Kohlberg's theory of moral development. So useful!

You will enjoy Vozzola's writing style. She writes an academic textbook replete with citations and stays true to her sources. However her own voice, humane and humorous, shines through. For example, in a section on "Pulling Things Together" Vozzola sums up her review of classic perspectives on moral development and of newer ones from neuroscience, evolutionary theory, and global perspectives. Then she mentions:

"Unlike many of my esteemed colleagues I have come to believe that there are indeed universal roots to human morality....despite our biological prewirings, Harry Potter's headmaster Dumbledore had it right: "It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities (Rowling, 1998, p. 333)."" -- p. 95.

Pivoting neatly off of this reference, Vozzola goes on to list the key ideas in moral development that she believes have withstood the test of time and research. These two pages sum up the heart of the book. In other words: we receive a top flight review of the field's theories from a scholar who has been immersed in the debates and in teaching the material for over two decades, and along the way we are given insight into her own personal assessment of these theories, replete with a reference to Harry Potter (by the way, Vozzola has researched the moral lessons that children take from Harry Potter - check it out: by searching "Vozzola Harry Potter" ).

I also need to mention how much of this book is built around making theory and research useful for psychologists, educators, parents, and humans trying to make sense of the basic questions that Tolstoy posed: "How to live and what to do?" From discussion questions to boxes with exercises to three (3!) final chapters on applying this work to therapy, education, and to developmental deficits, Vozzola establishes herself as a frontrunner in the grand tradition of "giving psychology away."

If you buy one textbook or review book on moral development, buy this one.

    compact, dense, and well-organized
    By S.E. Poza
This book is an amazing feat of condensing an enormous amount of complex information into a compact and accessible format. It covers many bases, and organizes them exceptionally well. It also offers comprehension checks to help the reader know whether or not he or she has successfully integrated the information. Since this is a textbook, such checks are not only appropriate, but helpful for teachers, but also good for the reader to make sure that the concepts were digested and not merely "ingested".

I'm doubly impressed by the general lack of deep jargon usage. However, though the book doesn't engage in heavy "academic-speak", it still is pretty dense stuff and sometimes you have to re-read a sentence because so much is jammed packed conceptually into a line or a paragraph. I see this as a concession to the length and size of the book, as well as the fact that this is more of an overview that is offered with an assumption that the reader is already familiar with the basic theories. Still, since a lot of ground is covered and some theories are more or less familiar than others to the target audience, a little more grounding may have been better at some points. Many of the theories are sketched out early on and expanded upon later, but, unless you already have a decent grasp, you may find yourself floundering a bit or needing to go back and refresh your memory on Piaget's theories or the moral components of Freud's personality concepts.

If I were a student, I would probably be pretty happy to have this as my textbook for a class on moral development in psychology. It would be a great (and not overly long or expensive) accompaniment to classroom teaching and discussion.

“The Union of The State” is the untold, uncensored story of the most influential and prolific comedy troupe of the last twenty-five years — and a unique tale in the history of show business. "The members of The State are my heroes, my peers and my friends. Individually and collectively they are responsible for an impressively large percentage of everything funny that currently exists in the world. Somehow Corey Stulce was able to convince all 437 original members of The State to tell their own stories, in their own words. For comedy nerds like me, it's essential reading." - "Weird Al" Yankovic The book is an oral history of the acclaimed troupe’s creation, dissolution, reinvention and reunion, told by all members of the group: Kevin Allison Michael Ian Black Robert Ben Garant Todd Holoubek Michael Patrick Jann Kerri Kenney-Silver Thomas Lennon Joe Lo Truglio Ken Marino Michael Showalter David Wain The book follows the members of The State from their time as classmates at New York University in the late 1980s to their quick ascent to fame via their three-season, sketch-comedy TV series on MTV and through their post-MTV projects. It also includes histories of the movie-turned-Netflix-series, “Wet Hot American Summer;” the Comedy Central hit, “Reno 911!;” and cult favorite comedy show/series, Stella. The projects the members of The State have written, directed or performed in leave no degree of separation between them and nearly everyone working in comedy today, such as Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Amy Poehler and Natasha Leggero. The book features rare photos and illustrations from the troupe’s twenty-five-year history. Andy Samberg said, “The State was the first time I’d ever seen ‘sarcastic sarcasm.’ They are the all-time champions of bum-out humor. They embodied the lameness of the lamest people and celebrated them for our enjoyment. Every time a comic does an intentionally lame joke and it makes you go, ‘Ewww,’ with delight, you have them to thank.” “The Union of The State” appeals not only to The State’s extensive fan base but also to comedy aficionados, showbiz biography fans and those who love an underdog success tale.

A weighty tome, but packed with fantastic stories and insights!
    By Jon M. Lepine
What an awesome book! When it first arrived in the mail, I couldn't believe the size. This thing is over 580 pages! I really wondered why, because there can't be this much information on an old comedy sketch show that only I seem to remember. I started reading it, and was amazed by the amount of detail and the personal aspects of the stories from all the troupe members. Such an amazing insight into the process and dynamic of what I felt was the best sketch comedy show to come out of the US in forever.

It's really too bad that the interest isn't so high that a video version, with the actors and writers on camera speaking the text from the book, couldn't be created, as it would be just a fantastic thing to watch. But it would be hours and hours, due to the amazing amount of detail in here.

The editing of all these personal stories and thoughts must have been an enormous amount of work, and I'm really thrilled to get to read it. I hear the actors voices as I read along, and it makes it all that more interesting.

If you're a fan of the State you will absolutely love this book.

    Beautiful
    By Neal A. Obermeyer
Chances are, if you're interested in this book, you love The State. This story will make you fall in love with these people in a whole new way.

There's nothing pretentious or groundbreaking about the format, and that's perfect -- the structure stays out of the way of the fantastic (often hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking) content. The 11 members guide most of the story, but the supporting cast really helps contextualize the unique and sometimes impenetrable genius and friendship that bonded this crew.

Hilarious History In Their Own Words
    By Hoju Koolander
As a dedicated fan of The State since it's premiere on MTV in the 90s, I was extremely excited about this oral history. I've bought their travel guide, DVD set, comedy album and watched their solo projects over the years to get my fill of absurdist comedy at its finest.

This amazingly comprehensive book covers the whole story from the beginning to current day in great detail using the words of every member of the group. Wild stories of college partying, displaying punk rock comedy hubris at MTV, infighting over outside projects and more are culled from new interviews by Corey Stulce, who has created a fascinating read.

Most refreshing is that the stories show the love that all members of The State have for each other. Tales of hurt feelings, group discord and shady show business deals ultimately have a happy ending as these comedy siblings always find their way back to the bond that has made them the driving force of comedy evolution and innovation over the last 20 years.

Buy it, read it, scoff at the nascent Peter Panism of these fascinating and talented performers. You won't be able to put it down, I know I couldn't.

Five Big Myths of Popular Psychology Amazon-exclusive content from Scott O. Lilienfeld, Steven Jay Lynn, John Ruscio, and Barry L. Beyerstein, the authors of 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology Virtually every day, the news media, television shows, films, and Internet bombard us with claims regarding a host of psychological topics: psychics, out of body experiences, recovered memories, and lie detection, to name merely a few. Even a casual stroll through our neighborhood bookstore reveals dozens of self-help, relationship, recovery, and addiction books that serve up generous portions of advice for steering our paths along life’s rocky road. Yet many popular psychology sources are rife with misconceptions. Indeed, in today’s fast-paced world of information overload, misinformation about psychology is at least as widespread as accurate information. Self-help gurus, television talk show hosts, and self-proclaimed mental health experts routinely dispense psychological advice that’s a bewildering mix of truths, half-truths, and outright falsehoods. Without a dependable tour guide for sorting out psychological myth from reality, we’re at risk for becoming lost in a jungle of “psychomythology.” In our new book, 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology: Shattering Widespread Misconceptions About Human Nature, we examine in depth 50 widespread myths in popular psychology (along with approximately 250 other myths and “mini-myths”), present research evidence demonstrating that these beliefs are fictional, explore their ramifications in popular culture and everyday life, and trace their psychological and sociological origins. Here, in David Letterman-like style, we present - in no particular order – our own candidates for five big myths of popular psychology. Myth # 1: Most people use only 10% of their brain power There are several reasons to doubt that 90% of our brains lie silent. At a mere 2-3% of our body weight, our brain consumes over 20% of the oxygen we breathe. It’s implausible that evolution would have permitted the squandering of resources on a scale necessary to build and maintain such a massively underutilized organ. Moreover, losing far less than 90% of the brain to accident or disease almost always has catastrophic consequences (Kolb & Whishaw, 2003). How did the 10% myth get started? One clue leads back about a century to psychologist William James, who once wrote that he doubted that average persons achieve more than about 10% of their intellectual potential. Although James talked in terms of underdeveloped potential, a slew of positive thinking gurus transformed “10% of our capacity” into “10% of our brain” (Beyerstein, 1999). Myth # 2: It’s better to express anger than to hold it in If you’re like most people, you believe that releasing anger is healthier than bottling it up. In one survey, 66% of undergraduates agreed that expressing pent-up anger--sometimes called “catharsis”--is an effective means of reducing one’s risk for aggression (Brown, 1983). Yet more than 40 years of research reveals that expressing anger directly toward another person or indirectly (such as toward an object) actually turns up the heat on aggression (Bushman, Baumeister, & Stack, 1999; Tavris, 1988). Research suggests that expressing anger is helpful only when it’s accompanied by constructive problem-solving designed to address the source of the anger (Littrell, 1998). Why is this myth so popular? In all likelihood, people often mistakenly attribute the fact that they feel better after they express anger to catharsis, rather than to the fact that anger usually subsides on its own after awhile (Lohr, Olatunji, Baumeister, & Bushman, 2007). Myth # 3: Low Self-Esteem is a Major Cause of Psychological Problems Many popular psychologists have long maintained that low self-esteem is a prime culprit in generating unhealthy behaviors, including violence, depression, anxiety, and alcoholism. The self-esteem movement has found its way into mainstream educational practices. Some athletic leagues award trophies to all schoolchildren to avoid making losing competitors feel inferior (Sommers & Satel, 2005). Moreover, the Internet is chock full of educational products intended to boost children’s self-esteem. But there’s a fly in the ointment: Research shows that low self esteem isn’t strongly associated with poor mental health. In a painstakingly - and probably painful! - review, Roy Baumeister and his colleagues (2003) canvassed over 15,000 studies linking self-esteem to just about every conceivable psychological variable. They found that self-esteem is minimally related to interpersonal success, and not consistently related to alcohol or drug abuse. Perhaps most surprising of all, they found that “low self-esteem is neither necessary nor sufficient for depression” (Baumeister et al., 2003, p. 6). Myth # 4: Human memory works like a tape recorder or video camera, and accurately records the events we’ve experienced Despite the sometimes all-too-obvious failings of everyday memory, surveys show that many people believe that their memories operate very much like tape recorders, video cameras, or DVDs. It’s true that we often recall extremely emotional events, sometimes called flashbulb memories because they seem to have a photographic quality (Brown & Kulik, 1977). Nevertheless, research shows that even these memories wither over time and are prone to distortions (Krackow, Lynn, & Payne, 2005-2006). Today, there’s broad consensus among psychologists that memory isn’t reproductive—it doesn’t duplicate precisely what we’ve experienced—but reconstructive. What we recall is often a blurry mixture of accurate and inaccurate recollections, along with what jells with our beliefs and hunches. Rather than viewing our memory as a tape recorder, we can more aptly describe our memory as an ever-changing medium that highlights our ability to create fluid narratives of our experiences. Myth # 5: Hypnosis is a unique “trance” state that differs in kind from wakefulness Popular movies and books portray the hypnotic trance state as so powerful that otherwise normal people will commit an assassination (The Manchurian Candidate); commit suicide (The Garden Murders); perceive only a person’s internal beauty (Shallow Hal); and our favorite, fall victim to brainwashing by alien preachers who use messages embedded in sermons (Invasion of the Space Preachers). But research shows that hypnotized people can resist and even oppose hypnotic suggestions (Lynn, Rhue, & Weekes, 1990; Nash, 2001), and won’t do things that are out of character, like harming people they dislike. In addition, hypnosis bears no more than a superficial resemblance to sleep: Brain wave studies reveal that hypnotized people are wide awake. So there’s no reason to believe that hypnosis differs in kind from normal wakefulness. Instead, hypnosis appears to be only one procedure among many for increasing people’s responses to suggestions. More information about each of these myths and a complete list of references are available in 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology.

"Written in an accessible and entertaining style, the book examines a wide range of myths from all areas of psychology. . . Accordingly, the book is a much-needed antidote to the avalanche of misinformation that masquerades as psychology and should be required reading for anyone with a passing interest in psychology or, for that matter, the human condition." (Department of Psychology, 1 June 2011)

"Not only does the book illustrate just how often our intuitions are wrong, it also shows us how - in comparison to the truth - uninteresting they are. Shallow judgments imply over-confidence, assumption and monotomy. Assuming that you know something prior to giving any consideration to where that knowledge comes from is a mistake for many reasons but perhaps most of all because such presumption precludes surprise. To be surprised - shocked, provoked, scandalized - is a pleasure. . . 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology tells us that we need urgently to deal with our tendency to judge books by their covers. And just maybe, rather than considering any idealistic appeal to our rationalism, we should deal with this problem by considering an inversion similar to Kubrick's: for now at least, when it comes to presenting discoveries about the mind, we ought not to try in vain to change our nature - our tendency towards prejudice - but instead do something simpler: tell better stories, and design better covers." (The Skeptic, 2011)

"As you can tell from my reactions above I found this a very informative book and I'm only touching on particular things with my comments. If you're a writer, this book should be read post-haste so you don't keep repeating things you thought were true and obviously aren't. For everyone else, the revelations should make you sit up and take heed of what not to be taken in by." (SFCrowsnest.co.uk, 1 May 2011)

"This would be an ideal book to have in offices where people have to spend some time waiting for appointments." (Education Digest, November 2010)

"This book would suit educators involved in study skills and critical thinking courses who might be looking for some new angles with which to update or spruce up their courses. It should be equally digestible to the A-level student and the first-year undergraduate."  (PLATH, December 2010)

"I love 50 Great Myths and used it in my winter seminar.  This should be on every psychologist's shelf." (Dartmouth Alumni Magazine, October 2010)

"This is a refreshing and fun look at many of the concepts that have been accepted as fact by our popular culture." (Book End Babes, September 01, 2010)

"At the end of each sub-section covering an individual myth is a list of anti-factoids about related matters and their factual antidotes. By this means a considerable range of topics is covered." (Education Review, July 2010)

"Maybe we should pay more attention to books like 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology: Shattering Widespread Misconceptions about Human Nature. The four psychology professors who authored this enlightening book are up against the roughly 3,500 self-help titles, a lot of them based on false premises, that are published in the U.S. every year." (Poe'sDeadly Daughters, April 2010)

"Scott Lilienfeld and his team ... have a history in delving into the dark myths of science, and pseudoscience ... .They are back. As with their other works, these authors manage to write well for ease of reading so many facts, and do so with their characteristic humor and cutting edge science. This book is [an] illumination, and vital reading for professionals and even laymen." (Metapsychology, June 2010)

"Who should read this book? Anyone interested in psychology and or the scientific method.  The book is written in an easy to read fashion, is well referenced and includes a wide array of topics.  The book teaches the value of critical thinking, and tells us it's all right to question authority. In conclusion, 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology is a must read for psychology majors, therapists and anyone who wishes to gain knowledge about the diverse field of psychology.  I wish this book was available when I was studying psychology in college." (Basil & Spice (Jamie Hale), May 2010)

"Popular psychology is a prolific source of myths. A new book does an excellent job of mythbusting: 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology. Some myths I had swallowed whole and the book's carefully presented evidence made me change my mind. They cover 50 myths in depth, explaining their origins, why people believe them, and what the published research has to say about the claims. Everything is meticulously documented with sources listed. The authors have done us a great service by compiling all this information in a handy, accessible form, by showing how science trumps common knowledge and common sense, and by teaching us how to question and think about what we hear. I highly recommend it." (Dr. Harriet Hall for Skeptic Magazine, February 2010, and ScienceBasedMedicine.org, November 2009)

"50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology is written in an engaging style and is valuable for both professionals and the general public. I highly recommend it." (Skeptical Inquirer, February 2010)

"Delightful and important book ... .This is a fine tool for teaching critical thinking. 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology is much more than an entertaining put-down of popular misconceptions. Any psychologist can put [this book] to good use. Certainly teachers can use it as a supplement to aid in teaching critical thinking and to suggest ideas for research on other myths. We can give it to family members and friends who are curious about what psychology has to contribute and might themselves engage in some myth busting." (PsycCritiques, January 2010)

"If you are familiar with other books by the same authors, you know that the writing style is incredibly engaging and easy-to-read, making the book accessible to those with little knowledge of psychology and well as those with considerable education in the field. While we certainly won't stop combating clinical psychology myths here at PBB, it's always exciting to come across like-minded folks also providing valuable material!" (Psychotherapy Brown Bag, October 2009)

"50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology is a fascinating book, and while reading, I cheered the authors on. If you have questioned science as some of us have, this book will reassure you that your thinking was perfectly logical and correct. 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology clarifies things about which I have always wondered, but never challenged. Myths about aging, memory, learning, emotions and motivation, and mental illness are among the subjects covered.  The reading is enlightening, refreshing and interesting. You don't have to be a Ph.D, or even a student of psychology to enjoy this book.  It's is written in language all can understand and the information is easily digested." (Basil & Spice, October 2009)

"Scott Lilienfeld and his coauthors explore the gulf between what millions of people say is so and the truth. Some of these myths are just plain fascinating." (US News and World Report, October 2009)

    Review
“True knowledge is hard won, and this timely and remarkable book shows us that stamping out falsehoods is no easy task either. The book does it all: it debunks all-too-common beliefs from the pseudoscientific fringe; it presents evidence against a variety of myths that seem like they ought to be true; it explains why people fall prey to such falsehoods; and it ends with some tantalizing facts about mind and behavior that make it clear that the truth can be every bit as amazing as fiction. These 50 myths won't disappear with the publication of this book, but those who read it will enjoy being able to set others-many others-straight.”
    –Thomas Gilovich, Cornell University

"We have needed this compendium for some time. These factoids and popular (but fallacious) memes about psychology have been exposed in single publications, but critiques of all of them have never been brought together in one place before. The myths chosen by these authors are indeed popular ones—the very ones that psychology instructors encounter every day. The book is an incredible resource for both student and instructor. The critiques are accurate and well written. I’m sure my copy will be dog-eared within six months."
–Keith E. Stanovich, author or How To Think Straight About Psychology and What Intelligence Tests Miss

"A much-needed mythbuster for consumers and students of psychology. This engaging book reminds us that applying science to everyday psychology is not only enormously worthwhile, but fun."
–Carol Tavris, Ph.D., coauthor of Mistakes were made (but not by me)

"Because I only use 10% of my brain, I had to play Mozart music while reading this book, and then be hypnotized to recover the memory of it because of early childhood traumas that were repressed but occasionally leaked through out-of-body experiences and ESP. And if you believe any of the above you need to read this book...twice if its mythbusting revelations cause you to repress the memory of it."
–Michael Shermer, Publisher of Skeptic magazine, monthly columnist for Scientific American, and author of Why People Believe Weird Things

"Is it true that psychology is mostly common sense? For anyone who wonders, this amazing book—which effectively discounts 50 pop psychology myths and briefly dismisses 250 more—provides convincing answers. And it does more: it offers fascinating examples of how science works and supports critical thinking. For teachers, students, writers, and anyone who wants to think smarter, this classic-to-be will be a valuable resource and a great read."
–David G. Myers, Hope College, author, Intuition: Its Powers and Perils

"I find each and every chapter excellent and from a teaching point of view, brilliant. The way in which the history of the myths is presented up to the critical but balanced discussion of each myth, is a great achievement. Scott Lilienfeld is well-known for his user-friendly writing style, but in this text he and his co-authors reach a new level. This led to a book which will not only be easily understandable by undergraduate and especially first year students, but also by the general population."

    A must read for all!
    By Jennifer M
Lilienfeld, Lynn, Ruscio and Beyerstein (2010) set out to debunk what many people view as "common sense " in their book 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology. If you have ever thought that people only use 10% of their brain or most mentally ill people are violent, this book is a must read. The authors provide strong, research evidence debunking what most of society believes is common sense. As a psychology student studying Clinical Psychology, I found this book to be well written for those who have never studied psychology. The authors do a great job describing statistical terms and research in a way that anyone can understand them. I enjoyed how they describe where many of these myths may have originated and why. While reading this book, I felt the authors where able to explain why so many people believe a statement, such as, “most people experience a midlife crisis in their 40s or early 50s", and then show the reader, with valid research, why this statement is not true. This book is not only a great read for the psychology community, also a great read for anyone. I would strongly suggest 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology anyone in hopes that more people will begin to understand common psychological myths.

This book is measured, insightful, thorough and enlightening.
    By Robert S. Hanenberg
Here are some myths I had always assumed had some truth in them: some people are left-brained, others right-brained; adolescence is always a time of psychological turmoil; when dying, or when loved ones die, people pass through five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance); intelligence tests are biased against certain groups of people; men and women communicate in very different ways (Mars vs. Venus); most people who were sexually abused as children develop personality disturbances in adulthood; adult children of alcoholics display distinctive symptoms; the incidence of autism has increased; abstinence is the only realistic option for alcoholics; shock therapy is physically dangerous and immoral. It turns out that there is no good evidence for any of these.

The method of this book is to describe a myth, to give survey evidence that most people believe it, to trace the source of the myth and to give experimental evidence showing that the myth is not true.

All of us read or hear such myths, and because we hear them so often, and because they are so often the basis of television shows and movies, we come to believe there is some truth in them. But unfortunately most of the time they are nothing more than folk tales. I was pleased to learn that there is a whole industry dedicated to finding out whether they are true or false. But I kept wondering what measures I could take to avoid assimilating false information, other than to forswear all television, movies, newspapers and the internet. I also kept wondering whether it is possible to know anything much about the psychology of human beings.

This book is measured, insightful, thorough and enlightening. One annoyance is that on virtually every page you will find words separated arbitrarily by spaces: gen erate, par ents, dis etangling, experi ment, uni versity, person ality, astonish ment, advant age, etc. I cannot imagine why this got through.

A MARVELOUS COMPENDIUM AND REFUTATION OF SUCH ERRONEOUS BELIEFS
    By Steven H Propp
The authors state in the Preface to this 2010 book, "Our book is the first to survey the full landscape of modern popular psychology, and to place common misconceptions under the microscope of scientific evidence. By doing so, we hope to both dispel prevalent but false beliefs and arm readers with accurate knowledge... We've made particular efforts to make our book accessible to beginning students and laypersons, and we presume no formal knowledge of psychology... the book can be enjoyed equally by specialists and nonspecialists alike." (Pg. xv)

As an example of misleading film/media portrayals, they note about the movie Rain Man that Dustin Hoffman's character is "characterized by remarkable mental abilities, such as 'calendar calculation' (the ability to name the day of a week given any year and date), multiplication and division of extremely large numbers, and knowledge of trivia, such as the batting averages of all active major league baseball players. Yet at most 10% of autistic adults are savants." (Pg. 17)

After pointing out the "we only use 10% of our brains" myth, they ask, "if the 10% myth is so poorly supported, how did it get started?... One stream leads back to pioneering American psychologist William James... James said he doubted that average persons achieve more than about 10% of their INTELLECTUAL POTENTIAL... '10% of our capacity' gradually morphed into '10% of our brain'... Undoubtedly, the biggest boost ... came when journalist Lowell Thomas attributed the 10% brain claim to William James... in the 1936 preface to ... Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends & Influence People. The myth has never lost its steam since." (Pg. 24)

About "subliminal advertising," they note, "Vance Packard popularized this view of the unconscious in his 1957 smash bestseller, The Hidden Persuaders. Packard accepted uncritically the story of marketing consultant James Vicary, who supposedly conducted a successful demonstration of subliminal advertising at a ... movie theatre. Vicary claimed that during a movie, he ... exposed cinema patrons to messages flashed on the screen for a mere 1/3,000 of a second, urging them to buy popcorn and Coca-Cola. He proclaimed that although movie-goers were unaware of these commands, sales of popcorn and Coca-Cola skyrocketed during the six-week duration of his 'experiment'... Vicary finally admitted is 1962 that he'd made up the whole story in an effort to revive his failing consulting business." (Pg. 38-39)

Of the so-called Mozart Effect [which was originally based on an article in the respected science journal 'Nature'], they state, "Several investigators who tried to replicate the original Nature findings reported either no effect or a miniscule one... multiple studies revealed that the Mozart Effect was trivial in magnitude ... and of trivial duration... Moreover, none of the published studies examined children, let alone infants, who were the supposed beneficiaries of the Mozart Effect... parents hoping to transform their babies into genuises by exposing them to the soundtrack of Amadeus are best advised to save their money." (Pg. 47-48)

Of the famous "five stages of death" in Elizabeth Kübler-Ross's book On Death and Dying, they point out, "her research was based almost entirely on potentially biased samples... subjective observations, and unstandardized measurements of people's emotions across time... research evdence suggests that many dying people don't pass through her stages in the same order... many skip Kübler-Ross stages, or even pass through them in reverse order... Moreover, the boundaries among Kübler-Ross's stages are often blurry, and there's minimal evidence for sudden 'jumps' from one stage to another." (Pg. 61)

This book is a vastly informative, well-documented, and surprisingly thorough critique of such "folk beliefs." They also include citations from popular culture (movies, books, TV shows, etc.) showing the influence of these ideas. Almost ANYONE could benefit from reading this book (even if it skewers a few of one's own "favorite" misconceptions).
