About the Author
Mai Al-Nakib was born in Kuwait in 1970. She holds a PhD in English literature from Brown University and teaches postcolonial studies and comparative literature at Kuwait University. The Hidden Light of Objects is her first collection of short stories. She lives in Kuwait, and is currently writing her first novel.

Fragile memories, carefully wrapped in purple tissue paper

We all have our own objects. Our own memories. Some we try to hide, and others we often remove from their boxes and we unwrap, to hold and to touch. These objects, their multiple meanings and their insurmountable value, are the essence behind Al-Nakib’s collection of stories.
This collection of perfectly crafted short stories was emotionally difficult for me to read, mainly due to the recurring theme of family bonds and the effects of the loss of the mother figure on those families. With most of the stories based in Kuwait, Al-Nakib highlights memories of a childhood that was practically perfect. Yet this reality is shaken, both by war and life, which just 'happens'.
Illness, and inevitably death, are prominent in this selection of short stories, which are each introduced by a vignette, linking all the stories somehow into a perfectly woven tapestry of memories. For anyone who has suffered the illness, or loss, of a mother, these short stories will be especially poignant. Nothing can assuage the pain of a mother lost.
The image of birds is also prominent throughout the selection of short stories, and each time a bird would emerge on one of the pages, it would bring me a sense of hope and joy. Al-Nakib has a way of forcing hope on the reader in that way, while juxtaposing what was perfect in the past, with what is so difficult in the very real present, a glimmer of hope always permeates through the lines.
Often gripping with nostalgia, at other times, humorous and sometimes painfully devastating to read. Yet Al-Nakib writes with such ease and fluidity, and her sentences are incredibly complex and packed with meaning. Her writing encourages readers to slow down, to indulge in every word, in every emotion, and to re-read each line. Her words become objects and the light reflects differently with each reading.

Particular and Universal

I read not just for entertainment, but to learn, and to be transported. Mai al-Nakib's stories have opened up a world to me of which I knew very little, and yet a common human thread runs through them, which allows me to identify with, say, a group of teenagers, in one instance, or with the eternal, universal circumstances and complications of women and wives, in another. I look forward to her forthcoming novel.

Small stories, huge impact

I have always known very little of the unrest in the Middle East, and I went into "The Hidden Light of Objects" seeking entertainment and a "pretty" read (Just look at that gorgeous cover! And how deep can a book of short stories really go?). I feel silly thinking about my initial expectations now, because I was blown away by the poignancy and magnitude of this collection.
The themes of sadness and loss are contrasted with hope and beauty in each story. The beautiful portrait drawn of Kuwait through the everyday lives of its people is purposefully splattered with expected (but no less devastating) losses as life moves forward and then tragically shredded by the effects of war on the people ensnared in it.
I often found myself reading, re-reading, and reading again several passages: once to understand them, again to visualize them, and finally to feel them. The book’s complexity requires it, its lyrical richness implores it, and its emotional depth demands it.
“The Hidden Light of Objects” is to be treasured, shared, and remembered. Its significance is found both within its pages and in the feelings that remain long after the last page turns. In a word, this book is important.
