About the Author
D.A. HORTON currently serves on staff at Summit Church in Durham, NC while he and his family are preparing to plant a church in Los Angeles. Prior to his current role he served as an urban church planter, pastor, and Lead Teaching Elder in Kansas City, MO for nearly six years; a National Coordinator of Urban Student Ministries and the Urban Initiatives Team at the North American Mission Board (NAMB); and the Executive Director at ReachLife Ministries, the non-profit arm of Reach Records. D.A. is currently working on his Ph.D. at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Applied Theology with a North American emphasis. With a heart to provide local churches with quality Bible-centered tools and resources for evangelism and discipleship, D.A. wrote two books: G.O.S.P.E.L. and DNA: Foundations of the Faith both published by Moody Publishers. His third book, Bound to Be Free: Escaping Performance to be Captured by Grace will be released through NavPress in spring 2016. Systematic Theology for the Layperson

This is a book of systematic theology for the layman. The title itself expresses the conviction of the author, that the Christian faith is based on foundations of God, the Bible, and lived out through life in Jesus, and outreach to the world with the gospel of Christ. Horton goes through a primer with regards to:
1) The Bible
2) God
3) Sin
4) Salvation
5) Church
6) Angels and Demons
7) End times
8) Personal Evangelism
9) Living the Christian Life
On the Bible, Horton briefly describes the word 'Bible,' what it means, how the Bible came to be, God's revelation, the inerrancy of the Bible, how to study the Bible, and many more.
On God, the emphasis is on Theology, Christology, and Pneumatology, which is essentially the study of God the Father, Son, Holy Spirit respectively. On Salvation, The chapter on sin gives an overview of the creation and the fall of mankind, how sin enters the world, the consequences, and the three types of sin, namely, the inherited, the imputed, and the personal sins. It ends with a call to believers, encouraging them to say no to sin. The study of salvation touches on G.R.A.C.E, faith, assurance, justification, sanctification, and glorification. On Church, or Ecclesiology, Horton explains the definition of the Church, her mission, leadership, and ordinances like the Baptism and the Lord's supper. The chapter on angels and demons unpacks who they are, how they relate to humans, who Satan is and the topic of demonic possession. Chapter 7 is about the end times, what Revelation says, on death, and how the judgment will look like. There is also a useful summary of all the different interpretations of the Millenial times. There is a short chapter on evangelism, the Great Commission, and how to share the gospel. The last chapter challenges believers to engage the world, the culture, to live the spiritual disciplines, to understand and to connect our theology with everyday living.
My Thoughts

It's amazing how one can pack so much into a little book for a mini-Systematic Theology survey. All the basics are covered, from God the Trinity, Christology, Pneumatology, Ecclesiology, Eschatology, Soteriology, Hamartiology, and many more, the purpose of the book is to give laypeople a quick and concise overview of basic foundations of faith. It makes theology enjoyable to learn. Horton is clear about making sure he explains any theological terms and concepts. With ample spaces and questions to prompt readers, it is a self-guided tour for individuals who like to know a little more about theology in general. It is also designed for group study, so that people can be reminded of the basic tenets of the faith. Easy to read, it is also practice oriented, with many tips for readers to apply, like evangelism, spiritual disciplines, and how to read the Bible. In summary, this is a light-weight overview of Systematic Theology. While those of us trained in theology will find it too basic, it is important to know that there are many others who are too busy or unable to pursue a theological education for various reasons. This book whets the appetite and gives laypersons an opportunity to learn.

Book Review

Being able to see Horton speak, I know the passion that he has. His book "DNA: Foundation of the Faith" is an example of that passion! Horton writes in a way that is easy to understand and perfect for any Christian to develop a solid foundation of understanding Christianity. Horton talks about everything from, what is the Bible? To, how do I live this out? With writing "DNA" it would be easy to not even open up the Bible itself. But Horton didn't forget that the Word needs to be read.
Throughout the book you will have many opportunities to write about different passages of scripture, almost as if you are doing a personal bible study, while reading a book. Don't understand a big word? No problem! There is a great word bank in the back to help you with those tough words. You not only learn about the Bible itself, but you get to open the Bible and learn more about God. "DNA" is a very practical, educating, spiritual book all at the same time.
This is an awesome tool for young Christians, from early teens to late twenty's, youth groups or small groups, individual usage, and new believers. It's geared for the urban reader, but I believe that once you understand some of the lingo, you will be able to use it in any setting.
I personally felt that some of the language that was used was not needed. I am not from an urban setting, but I compare the language to my Dad trying to use language of my generation.(The language used is not vulgar or coarse.)
I really liked some of the books that Horton suggested to read about different topics. Some very good authors are given as suggestions to read more about certain subjects.

Making God Groovy

It is in many ways an excellent primer, covering a gamut of theological topics without getting too complex or controversial. On primary doctrines (for which there must be accuracy to be Christian) he is solid. For less important doctrines he explains the various positions and leaves it to the reader to study for himself which is most biblical.
So what is my concern? It seems that D. A. Horton's main goal was to produce a book in the lingo of the "urban reader", which is to say, in hip hop. By that, I don't mean simpler English (I would have no problem with that), but the specialized English of a ghetto teenager.
He goes so far as to state (on the second page of chapter 1):
A modern parallel to Koine is the language of ebonics... Ebonics has spread throughout the world thanks to technological advancements and hip-hop culture. Rap music, the most recognized and vocal element of hip-hop culture, has broken down cultural, socioeconomic, and racial walls worldwide. As God used the spread of Greek civilization to later advance the gospel, so is He using ebonics and rap to spread the Good News today.
Hip hop is a modern parallel to Koine Greek? Hardly. Koine Greek was the lingua franca of Jesus' day; hip hop is a specialized dialect that only a subset of English speakers understand. God put the New Testament in Koine so that it could be accurately understood by as many people as possible. People talk in hip hop so as to identify and communicate with a specific clique. For example:
You know how you can tell when someone is gone off that lean by the way they walk and talk; in the same way, believers who are living Spirit-filled will show evidence. (Pg. 35, emphasis added)
This kind of writing actually excludes people from understanding. He could have simply said "intoxicated" instead of "gone off that lean" and we all would understand, but he is attempting to win the attention of urban readers by using their code.
If we need a theology in hip hop jargon, perhaps we also need a theology in computer nerd jargon, or in the complex language of philosophers, or in the eloquence of eighteenth century romanticism?
Must we use slang to make urban dwellers want to study our God? Do we need to tell them "God is bangin'" (pg 37)? Then our God is not very glorious. No one has to produce hip hop books on Yosemite or the Grand Canyon.
