About the Author
Alastair Duncan was for fourteen years associated with Christie's, New York, latterly as a Consultant. After joining the auction house in 1977, he organized and catalogued a great number of sales devoted to Art Nouveau and Art Deco and nineteenth-century decorative arts. He has acted as guest curator for exhibitions at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., and is now an independent consultant specializing in the decocrative arts of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He is the author of many books, including Art Deco Furniture, Art Nouveau Furniture, American Art Deco, and Masterworks of Louis Comfort Tiffany.

The Definitive Volume on American Art Deco

A gem of a book.. the best in it's class. While browsing the old-fashioned way (in actual reality) for a single book that encompasses Art Deco in all it's American forms, I found this top-class book to have all that I could want. I'm currently researching Art Deco for a theatre musical, so my review here is mostly about the illustrations. You'll find all the classic images that you need, plus a lot more besides. There's history to set you up.. with chapters on Architecture, Furniture, Fittings, Sculpture, Jewellery, etc.. plus feature chapters given over to materials ( metal, glass, ceramics etc)
The images are large and well chosen, full of colour, where available, plus archival black & white, and are over-flowing in detail. Classic buildings are featured with many close-ups of period details, both interior and exterior. The text seems to be very well written and researched, with detailed captions.
In all.. more than you could fit in half a dozen books.. and priced within reach.

The Modernist movement that became "Art Deco".

I purchased Alastair Duncan's book, "American Art Deco", expecting a well-illustrated "coffee table book". I got that and so much more!

In "American Art Deco", author Alastair Duncan gives the reader a comprehensive history of the decorative arts, beginning with the modernist movement in Germany and the French response to it. The text lays out for the reader the influences of what became known as "Art Deco" in the United States as well as the style's initial rejection in America that, over time, would flourish.

The author breaks down his subject into an excellent introduction followed by the modernist works in furniture, textiles, metalwork, silverware and architecture. Leading designers in each area are highlighted and given credit for their works which often were indigenous American styles and innovations.

The illustrations and photos, color and black and white, give the reader an excellent idea of the kind of works that were produced by American artists and designers. Some designers were both prolific and created works that spanned many mediums. If I could fault the book, it's that I wanted even more color plates of these beautiful works or practical art!

This is an excellent work which covers the entire Art Deco/Modernist movement and I enjoyed both the read and the pictures! I recommend this book with five stars!

I have built several boats over the years and am very impressed with this design and construction technique. The book nicely outlines the construction project in easy to follow steps accompanied by numerous photos. This is a beautiful boat that can be built by a beginner.

A Chance to Find Your One

This was a really great book. Haley has always been the shy and quiet twin. Her sister, Kenzi, always had to be the center of attention and when she notices others interested in Haley then she does her best to get their attention. Haley's best friend Brody was going to ask Haley to become his girlfriend but before he could do that Kenzie asks him out instead. Finally it is time for college and Haley decides to head to Michigan instead of going to school in West Virginia with Kenzie and Brody. She wants to be able to be who she wants to be and not Kenzie's shadow. She colors her blonde hair brown and gets color contacts so she can change her eyes from blue to green. Liam Masters is the football Quarterback and the guy everyone wants to be with or be friends with. He's Brody's older brother and grew up with Haley and Kenzi.

Haley is a really great girl and she cares about other people. But she doesn't see herself realistically. She doesn't realize that she is gorgeous and that any guy would be thrilled to have her.

Liam is wonderful at times but if you cross him then he can be cruel. He does some really great things for Haley but he does some terrible things as well.

Also, Kenzie is messed up in the head in this book. She can't stand it if Haley has anything for herself. Especially Liam. The girl needs serious help.

Definitely worth reading.

LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love love love love love love loved One Chance. It’s been a long time since I’ve fallen in love with a book.

Great writing. Great characters. Great everything.

Would I recommend this book? Hells yeah. It gets 5 stars.

Here are a few of my random thoughts on this spectacular book:

1. If you are looking for a great love story, here you are. Girl loves boy since forever. Boy tormented her since forever. Girl finally gets him to notice her. Boy falls head over heels in love with girl. Boy’s ex, boy’s brother, and girl’s twin all try to wreak havoc on this couple. The question is will their love be enough? Let’s just say this book ends with a cliffhanger.
2. Liam: I was irritated with him at times, and at other times, he made me swoon. More loveable football star than douchebag for the most part. He was dreamy and hot, and I get why all the girls lusted after him.
3. Haley: She was a girl after my own heart. A go getter. I was glad that she finally got her man and stood up to her evil, bitchy twin.
4. Kenzie: She needed to be slapped and have several seats. She was a nuisance. A green eye monster. Who does that to their twin sister?
5. Meg: What a b____! I’m glad she didn’t last that long. Talk about a big mistake.
6. Brody: He irritated the heck out of me. He was a bigger douche than Liam at his worse. He was no better than Kenzie. Guess they were made for each other.
7. Quinn: She was an amazing friend. Ride or die. Very supportive. I loved her.

Again, I loved this book and couldn’t put it down. I read this book from Atlanta to Chicago. In less than 12 hours, I was done. Amazing story.

I can’t wait to read One More Chance.

One Chance is all you'll need and this author will have you hooked!

I'm having a hard time describing this one. Some parts seem almost teen-like but there are some situations that would not really be appropriate for them.

It starts when Haley and her twin Kenzie are fourteen. Haley is best friends with Brody and has a crush on his brother Liam. Actually both girls do.

I don't want to tell you what happens so let me just say that I despise Kenzie. She is obnoxious, self centered, cruel, self serving and has no consideration for anyone else's feelings or well being. This is evident from the get go and though it appears to lesson part way through, it never goes away. By the end of the book, you will hate her too.

Haley on the other hand, I really like. I can't help but feel bad for her to a point for having to deal with her witch of a twin.

She makes an awesome decision though and goes off to college away from her sister and Brody. She becomes fast friends with her roommate Quinn. Quinn is a terrific character. The two of them are great together. :-)

She becomes more adventurous and outgoing while at college. Again, I won't spill the beans but she does something that is surprising and that ends up causing some turmoil.

College is great until she makes enemies out of the barbie and Ken team which happens to include Brody's brother Liam.

When things get completely out of hand, Haley ends up in danger.

There are lots of twists and turns, back stabbing, plotting, secrets, lies, drinking, school work (they are in college), love, lust, hazing, friendship, and football.

As I said in the beginning, some of the things and behaviors of the characters in this book are quite juvenile. I also found myself getting whiplash once or twice with how quickly certain characters (I won't mention any names) change their mind or feelings.

Liam was a hard character for me to swallow. On one hand he seems like the model guy on the other he seems like an immature, arrogant a**. The jury is still out on whether or not I actually like him or not. As of right now, I'm not a fan.

Overall, I did really like it. There is something about T Renee Fike's writing style that draws me in and keeps me begging for more. This first book in this new series and her other books have had the same effect on me.

I have to tell you that it ends in a cliffhanger. The good news is that the next book is due out in August. :-) We don't have long to wait. Thank God!

I would recommend this and her other books because they are really that good and have characters that will keep you on your toes.

I received an ecopy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. It was engaging, frustrating, heart warming. dramatic, and emotional. I liked it a lot.

About the Author
Richard Scarry (1919-1994) published over 300 books with a total of 300 million copies sold worldwide. His fans are everywhere. Scarry was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He studied at the School of Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where he remained until being drafted into the army during World War II. Following the war, Scarry worked for the art departments of various magazines before making a career breakthrough in 1949 with his first book.

Hours of Busytown fun!

I bought this book for my 4 year-old daughter, who loves Busytown, and it has been a huge hit! I've been through dozens of preschool workbooks with my son and daughter, and in my opinion this is absolutely the best I've ever seen! There are about 90 pages of sorting exercises, mazes, dot-to-dots, counting and color-related activities, shape and pattern identification, finding the differences between two pictures, and much more. Stickers - there are more than 20 pages of them! - are incorporated into every single exercise in one way or another, and between finding and placing the stickers on the pages and completing the activities, we've already spent more than two fantastic hours "working" on this book and aren't even done.

Part of what makes this book wonderful are Richard Scarry's familiar characters - Huckle mixing cans of paint, the Pig family in their car - and his unmistakable illustrations rich with color and detail. Many of the pages seem almost as if they've been lifted right out of my long-treasured Scarry books! But, more than that, the activities themselves are just so creative and fun. We loved helping Able Baker Charlie decorate his cake, sorting letters with Postman Pig, helping Miss Honey's class complete their alphabet chart, and, of course, chasing after Mr. Frumble's fly-away hat. My only regret is that this book is only 90 pages long instead of 9,000. Fantastic and unhesitatingly recommended!

Fantastic Book!

My 4 year old son loved this workbook. It is the only one we have finished cover to cover! He requested it all the time and still has some of the extra stickers in his sticker box and loves to use them for fun. This is a well laid out, fun, and entertaining book for kids. They learn letters and numbers as well as develop motor skills. I cannot recommend this highly enough and wish there was another in the series!

great preschool activity book

My 3 1/2 yr old daughter loves this book! She nearly completed it within 2 days because of all the fun activities. What I love about it is that it really engages the child and is fun but is very educational at the time. Another great thing about the book is all the stickers- my daughter LOVES stickers and nearly every page has some sort of sticker activity. Highly recommended!!
