You cannot miss with Loren Eiseley
By A Customer
I think every book this man ever wrote is a masterpiece. His style is thoughtful, haunting, and beautiful. They are all good. Theodosius Dobzhansky described him as "...a Proust miraculously turned into an evolutionary anthropologist..." and Ray Bradbury wrote glowing reviews of many of his books including this one.
Here he writes from a naturalist's perspective on the unexpected and symbloic aspects of the universe. Read about seeds, heiroglyphs on shells, the Ice Age, lost tombs, city dumps and primative Man. The underlying theme is the desolation and renewal of our planet's history and experience.

Somber essays from an outstanding writer
By Shawn Moses
Loren Eiseley's dark, brooding prose is unique in the annals of nature writing. "The Unexpected Universe" features some of what are considered Eiseley's best essays. Heavily autobiographical and deeply personal, these essays are not cheerful ramblings on the joy of communing with nature. They are bleak, lonely musings on the human condition. Sometimes, Eisely's scholarly style gets the best of him - his penchant for expounding upon the works of obscure authors taints some of his work with a pompous air. But his best moments more than make up for his bad ones. Eiseley's universe can be profound, ethereal, and dreamlike. Life, Eisely shows, is a journey of discovery filled with moments of awe, fear and sorrow, and occasionally, even with moments of joy. His writings rekindle our sense of wonder for a universe whose intricacies and secrets extend far beyond the boundaries of human understanding.

A moving meditation by a deeply poetic observer of the natural world
By Shalom Freedman
There are a number of writers of works for the general public on scientific subjects ( Oliver Sachs, Lewis Thomas, Alan Lightman come first to mind) who in exploring their subjects provide profound and poetic insight into human nature and the human situation. Eiseley is such a writer also , and at times he writes passages of exquisite beauty. He often takes off from his own personal observation and in the course of reflection teaches truths about the natural world and the overall development of mankind.
He is no naive optimist and his brilliant essay in this volume comparing two of his great naturalist heroes, Darwin and Thoreau he speaks about the cruel and wasteful sides of the natural world. Even more he emphasizes the surprises the close observer of the natural world is often confronted by, the 'Unexpected Universe' of his title. Eiseley sees the mystery that is constantly the byproduct of close observation of nature.

"The evolution of a lifeless planet eventually culminates in green leaves. The altered and oxygenated air hanging above the continents presently invites the rise of animal apparitions compounded of formerly inert clay.
Only after long observation does the sophisticated eye succeed in labeling these events as natural rather than miraculous. There frequently lingers about them a penumbral air of mystery not easily dispersed. We seem to know much, yet we frequently find ourselves baffled.Humanity itself constitutes such a mystery, for our species arose and spread in a time of great extinctions. We are the final product of the Pleistocene period's millenial winters, whose origin is still debated. Our knowledge of this ice age is only a little over a century old, and the time of its complete acceptance even less. Illiterate man has lost the memory of that huge snowfall from whose depths he has emerged blinking."

In this context many of the best passages of this book relate to Eiseley's musings on prehistoric life and development of mankind. Some might find in this emphasis a hindrance to religious faith, but in one exceptionally telling passage of the book he shows the kind of friendly connection between scientific observation and religious faith which many of us would like to affirm.
"It is not sufficient any longer to listen at the end of a wire to the rustlings of the galaxies;it is not enough even to examine the great coil of DNA in which is coded the very alphabet of life. These are our extended perceptions. But beyond lies the great darkness of the ultimate Dreamer, who dreamed the light and the galaxies. Before act was, or substance existed, imagination grew in the dark. Man partakes of that ultimate wonder and creativeness. As we turn from the galaxies to the swarming cells of our own being, which toil for something , some entity beyond their grasp, let us remember man, the self- fabricator who came across an ice age to look into the mirrors and the magic of science. Surely he did not come to see himself or his wild visage only. He came because he is at heart a listener and search for some transcendent realm beyond himself."

Excerpt. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.
I had just finished kindergarten when I first saw the Atari 800. I was walking with my dad and my uncle Aladdin at the Military Base Exchange Store (in Alameda, California) and saw it in the electronics section. It actually had a computer keyboard. Apparently there was a system before the Atari 800, but whatever that was, I didn't want it.

Kids needed to have the latest thing in the TV commercials. I was one of them. I tugged my dad by his pants. Looking up at him, I begged him to buy it for me. My uncle giggled and told me to wait for a bit. My uncle kept telling me that something better would debut soon. My dad was a little upset, since he'd just bought me an electronic organ to play music on. He then proceeded toward another part of the store, but for some reason I was still captivated by the Atari 800's beveled computer buttons. I wanted to press some of those buttons so bad, just to see what it felt like. My dad then came around the corner of the store and told me that the system was too expensive. I told him that I wanted it or else. Being the little brat I was, I grabbed a plastic lightsaber sitting near the electronics section and pointed it toward my dad's stomach. I then muttered that if he didn't buy me the system, he would turn into Darth Vader. I had no idea who the hell Darth Vader was at the time, since my dad never got a chance to take me to the movies, but all of my friends told me that Darth Vader was bad. Since then I had thought all "bad" people were Darth Vader.

When we left the store, my uncle and dad noticed how I kept looking at the Atari 800 with my nose pressed against the store window. My dad and uncle would always team up against me and tell me to wait. I would then go into the common routine most children demonstrate when leaving their favorite store. For a few minutes, I would place myself in depression and pout in front of my dad because I hadn't got my latest toy. Five minutes later my mom would bake cookies, and all would be forgotten. My mom also repeated what my dad and uncle kept telling me during my frequent trips to the stores. She told me just to wait or else she wouldn't make cookies for me. This was just too much pressure for me.

My grandma was also living with us at the time, and I wanted someone to side with me in getting the Atari 800. My grandma asked me what it was. I told her it was the greatest thing ever created. She then told me that the name Atari 800 sounded like the name of an evil prophet, and that it might not be a good idea to get this Atari since she didn't know what it would do to the family. I felt that my chances for getting this system were pretty much screwed.

Entertaining Read that Brought Back Some Good Videogaming Memories
By Ken Innes IV
The author, Radford Castro, was a friend of mine in high school, so I have to admit my review might be a little biased. The first half of the book is all about his videogaming experiences in the eighties and nineties, all of which were entertaining. I could easily relate to his experiences and even shared in some of them directly, and it brought back many good memories. I think anyone who grew up playing videogames throughout the eighties and nineties would be able to relate and be kept entertained with the stories. The second part of the book is all about videogame emulation and is a lot more technical. I found this part interesting as well, but those who don't have an existing technical knowledge of videogames may have a harder time following it. Still, I think it gives a good understanding of videogame emulation for those who are interested and would be worth reading..

Play on...
By Spin Doc
If anything, the author presents an entertaining and comedic take on his experiences with video gaming. Of particular amusement to me is his hilarious take on his early video gaming years. As a young video game player in the early eighties and nineties, I can easily relate to the author's stories of fighting over quarters pizza parlors, the excitement of opening the box of the latest game systems, and challenging the "Street Fighter" masters at the local arcades. The book also includes a pretty comprehensive section on emulation, and the quizzes scattered throughout the book will pick your video game brain. If you're looking for a candid look at a true gamer's experience and want a time capsule of what's gone on in the video game market over the last 2 decades, this book may be for you.

get crazy sometimes. I'm a pretty big gamer so I share some of the experiences the writer has. Some of the stories can really get outrageous sometimes but they're really funny. If you're not a gamer, avoid this book. About half of the book may not make any sense to you since the writer assumes alot of things from the reader. I really dig his quiz though. It brought me back to memory lane.

I'm 22, and it scares me like I'm still 12.
By A Customer
Here's the deal: I read a spooky book when I was twelve. I couldn't remember the title or the author; all I knew is that the memory of long, dark hallways, doors locked from the inside and four lonely girls trapped in an institution haunted my nightmares for ten years. My concrete memories consisted of the thread of a plot: Four young girls, gifted with ESP, are brought to a private school so the headmasters can channel dead artists through their minds and sell the art as originals.
About a month ago, I mentioned the elusive book to a friend, who immediately named the title and the author, admitting his fear, as well. Pretending to buy for a younger sister who doesn't exist, I bought the book again -- with a new cover no longer featuring the young heroine with a candle -- and was overcome once more by Lois Duncan's ability to surround the simple narrative with swirling mists, dark corners and flickering candlelight.
DOWN A DARK HALL introduced me to the glorious world of wondering what's behind the door, a passion that extended into Stephen King, Clive Barker and even dark comic books. But even the "adult" writers can't capture atmosphere the way Duncan can. Like King's Carrie, Duncan illustrates the pain and chaos of adolescent girlhood, and the impossibility of escaping a world that doesn't understand. The difference is that your little sister can read Duncan while she's still young enough to feel the character's confusion... and the impact is strong enough to last a decade.

Wonderful

I remember years ago when I first picked up this book I really didn't expect much from it. I must say I was blown away with because it had elements that I loved. Ever since I read this book, I've been a Lois Duncan fan. No no NO!
By Abby
If you read this book years ago try to find a really good condition used copy but don't buy this edition! I did not know it was an "updated" edition for "modern audiences" and purchased it. I had read the book about 10+ times over the years but the last time I had read it was many years ago. This time when I cozied up with the book and started reading it I did not feel "connected" to the book as I had in the past. I kept thinking, "I don't remember this being said (or this being described) quite like that!" but figured it was simply because it had been so long since I had last read it. Then Madame shows Kit the sitting room that includes a WIDE SCREEN TV I said WTH?, turned the book over and there on the back cover was an advertisement for Duncan's other books with the caption:

"These new editions feature modernized text and a Q&A with Lois Duncan."

When Kit a little later says "Totally" to Sandy (Valley Girl style) I slammed the book shut and it is now in the recycling bin.

Duncan has not really written much in the past 2+ decades so maybe her income is drying up. But modifying these books is like colorizing It's a Wonderful Life. Disgraceful and greedy. If not that then she has no faith in today's youth. Feeling that you need to splatter your novels with popular slang and references to gadgets to win over a new generation of readers is offensive IMO. My daughter reads many books written in the 1960's and 1970's and they are as exciting to her today as they were for me then. She will NOT be reading Duncan's "updated" versions!

Hope: A Memoir of Survival in Cleveland, by Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, Mary Jordan, Kevin Sullivan

The #1New York TimesBestseller

A bestsellingbook that isinspiring the nation: “We have written here about terrible things that we never wanted to think about again . . . Now we want the world to know:we survived, we are free, we love life.”

Two women kidnapped by infamous Cleveland school-bus driver Ariel Castro share the stories of their abductions, captivity, and dramatic escape

On May 6, 2013, Amanda Berry made headlines around the world when she fled a Cleveland home and called 911, saying: “Help me, I’m Amanda Berry. . . . I’ve been kidnapped, and I’ve been missing for ten years.”

A horrifying story rapidly unfolded. Ariel Castro, a local school bus driver, had separately lured Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight to his home, where he kept them chained. In the decade that followed, the three were raped, psychologically abused, and threatened with death. Berry had a daughter—Jocelyn—by their captor.

Drawing upon their recollections and the diary kept by Amanda Berry, Berry and Gina DeJesus describe a tale of unimaginable torment, and Pulitzer Prize–winning Washington Post reporters Mary Jordan and Kevin Sullivan interweave the events within Castro’s house with original reporting on efforts to find the missing girls. The full story behind the headlines—including details never previously released on Castro’s life and motivations—Hope is a harrowing yet inspiring chronicle of two women whose courage, ingenuity, and resourcefulness ultimately delivered them back to their lives and families.

From School Library Journal
Teens who were fascinated by Michelle Knight's Finding Me: A Decade of Darkness, a Life Reclaimed (Weinstein, 2014) will eagerly read Berry and DeJesus's story of their kidnapping and 10-year ordeal with sociopath Ariel Castro. What is unique about the duos' memoir is the different experiences of the two young women held captive (along with Knight) in the same house, sometimes even chained to the same bed. There were years when they were unaware of each other's existence and years when they had limited to no contact. Berry, in particular, kept extensive diaries that are published here, giving readers keen insight into the daily routine in the house. While the girls were pitted against one another, the birth of Berry's baby (fathered by her captor) changed the dynamic in significant ways. Her feelings for Castro the rapist and Castro the loving father of her child brought confusion and anguish. DeJesus writes, "Jocelyn is the only happy person in this house, and I love her." Also unique is the fact that Berry escaped. The dramatic telling of her fear as she walked out of a room she had been conditioned to stay in, as well as her courageous rebellion against her captor is extraordinary. VERDICT An inside look at a horrific ordeal ripped from the headlines that will be devoured by teens.—Amy Cheney, Alameda County Library, CA

Review
Praise for Hope: A Memoir of Survival in Cleveland

“[C]ompulsively readable. . . . Berry and DeJesus’s memoir sections are startlingly illuminating—and genuinely inspiring. It’s astounding to read how the young women kept up their spirits and their hopes even while being held captive by a monstrously cold, self-pitying brute.”
—The Washington Post

“[A] breathtaking accomplishment. What could have been a record of two victims who endure the unendurable at the hands of a monster, is, instead, the story of two young and frightened girls as they come of age and, against all odds, come to an understanding of themselves and their tormenter. They emerge from the house on Seymour Avenue with an insight and compassion that many adults never grasp.”
—The Cleveland Plain Dealer

“Hope is riveting, chilling, powerful and unforgettable. From raw emotion to quiet determination, Berry and DeJesus show the world the strength of hope.”
—Deseret News

“The bravery and resolve that Berry and DeJesus convey in this well-crafted memoir is both astonishing and inspiring”
—Publishers Weekly

“[A] compelling chronicle of Berry and DeJesus' harrowing experiences in captivity, told in their own words and in a journal that Berry kept on scraps of paper . . . . A nuanced testament to the complexity of the human spirit.”
—Kirkus Reviews

Questions arise...
By Cindi M. Rice
While I read this book with an open and compassionate mind, and can honestly say that I find Amanda and Gina's courage and fortitude to be astonishing during the endless depravity they were forced to endure, I also wondered at the continual ommissions of Michelle Knight in the telling of their story. Indeed, Michelle was trapped the longest of the three, and conceived 5 individual pregnancies as a result of violent rape, only to have each fetus viciously beaten out of her body. Yet none of that was included in this book, but rather a brief reference of Michelle "being made to lose her baby". Just one miscarriage was referred to, and only in an oblique and vague manner.

I felt all through the book that somehow Michelle was not welcomed to be part of a threesome that offered support and comfort to one another. Once the girls were freed it wasn't mentioned that Michelle was gravely ill from long-standing abuse and poor nutrition, to the point that she had to remain in the hospital for several days until she could begin to stabilize.

And where was Michelle when Amanda and Gina were invited to meet the president and speak at the White House? Wasn't that personal triumph every bit Michelle's too, just as much as it was Gina's and Amanda's? I also felt sad for Michelle once they had been found and rescued. Gina and Amanda had large, loving families to go home to. Michelle had no one. For that reason alone, an effort should have been made to reach out to her, include her in all celebrating and certainly being presented at the White House. I'm personaly offended to see Michelle receive such disinterest and almost a dismissive flicking away. All three girls endured unspeakable horrors together, under the same small roof. It seems only natural that they would bond together and forge a friendship built from the ashes of that horrific decade of hell.

I find it so sad to see Michelle, with no family support system, strike out alone and try to rebuild her life and I feel that omission dragged the book down. I read Michelle's account of her experiences in her book "Finding Me" and feel there was much more honesty and compassion for the other two girls and their suffering, too, in her relating of those awful 10 years.

Horrific circumstances survived, but ongoing lack of respect for Michelle K. bothered me
By JudylL
Positive first: I really appreciated the research that went in to giving a narrative of the search and investigation for these girls, as well as narrative about other related events. I found these parts well written and helpful in piecing together a despicable world Castro created for himself. I also appreciated the honesty that Amanda Berry shows in talking about her conflicted feelings for Castro. This is understandable since he is her source of everything for 10 years: food, clothes, entertainment, even life.

As for the rest of the book: I felt that parts of the girls' narratives were poorly written. Or perhaps it just seemed "shallow" (for lack of a better term). Reading Michelle Knight's "Finding Me", I was struck by the brutal honesty. The verbiage was elementary in places, but was reading as you imagine she was just talking to the reader... telling them her story. In "Hope", I always felt as if pieces were held back, left out, or simply not addressed.

As unpopular as this statement may be, I feel it's merited: Michelle Knight was not treated fairly in this book. While it's clear that Castro set these girls up to compete for attention and meager resources from the beginning, playing them off each other, the book felt childish in it's limited narrative about Michelle. They don't even have the courtesy to thank or mention her in the acknowledgement? Amanda's view mentions once, in passing, that she was worried she wouldn't e allowed to carry her baby because Michelle had been forced into a miscarriage. No, he savagely attacked her and killed her unborn children that she wanted 4-5 times. I understand there were head games. I understand they are different people and may not want to 'hang out' after. I get that these 2 girls were closer in age than Michelle. I get that they had close families to return to, and she did not. But this was about RESPECTING her in their book. 2 years after their release. And that respect, in my opinion, is lacking. While I don't feel that these women can be judged for any way they are able to survive... they did whatever they had to do to get through to the next day.... I do think that it reflects poor mentoring by the authors helping them tell their story. Either way, I'm glad they are all free, and that precious baby is able to see want a real life is life.

My honest opinion on the book.
By Tristen
So I read the whole book cover to back in under 24 hours so this book will draw you in. However, much like a few other readers there are something’s I would have liked to know more about. To start with, let's get this right out there in the open. There is not much description on any other the attacks. You will learn more about what happened to these girls on the news than you will in this book. I can say you really feel like you are in there with them because the book starts to get monotonous. Yes, there is rape; we all know that it's coming, and while most of are not reading this book just to hear those details, it's skipped over so lightly (I understand. They are not trying to entertain anyone) it can be hard to really put yourself in the story. Also, something is up with the Michelle Knight business and this book screams it. It also paints a clear picture that it is Amanda's doing that Michelle is odd man out and Amanda is very dismissive of Michelle. Throughout the book she is barely mentioned, and they both skip over how badly Michelle was treated. No spoilers but Michelle and Gina spend a lot of time together only to barely see each other now, but Amanda and Gina now hang out often. Something is not right. Finally, you should know that this is Amanda's story, not really Gina's. A simple flip through the book and you can see it is 90 % written by Berry and the rest is Gina.

Excellent textbook, missed the online resource
By Kerri Devries
This book was a great tool in my Global Health class. There's lots of tables and charts included, which not only break up the text nicely but provide a lot of useful information. The opening vignettes are really good as well, and help set the tone for the chapter. My favorite part about this textbook was the "Main Messages" section at the end of the chapters. The summary it provided was great and it proved to be a helpful study tool.

The Pros:
-easy to read
-very informative
-excellent, up-to-date statistics
-summary section at the end of each chapter

The Cons:
-the online resource wasn't available when I took the class. I used the previous edition's online quizzes to study, but it certainly would have been ideal if the current online resource was available.

The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights: Travaux PreparatoiresFrom Oxford University Press

This book is the first collection of the drafting records of one of the world's two foremost human rights treaties, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) of 1966. It makes an important contribution to understanding the origins and meaning of economic and social rights, which were drafted over almost two decades years between 1947 and 1966. There is increasing global interest in the stronger protection of economic, social, and cultural rights, which are vital to the survival, dignity, and prosperity of everyone. Since 2013, individuals have been able to complain to the United Nations about violations of their rights, and action can also often be taken through regional and national human rights procedures. In this context, many of the current debates surrounding economic and social rights can be best understood in the light of their drafting history.

This book judiciously selects, and chronologically presents, the most important drafting documents or extracts thereof between 1947 and 1966. The book contains an extensive annotated table of documents, allowing researchers to track the progress of the key rights and issues in the drafting. It also includes an original analytical introductory essay, which summarizes and analyses the main procedural and substantive developments during the drafting. The essay charts the many influences on the recognition of economic and social rights at a key moment in history: the aftermath of the Second World War, which demonstrated the need to eliminate the economic and social causes of threats to global peace and security. This book is essential reading for scholars, practitioners, and students of international human rights law.
