About the Author
M. Ageyev is a pseudonym. Following the publication of�Novel with Cocaine in a Paris-based Russian��migr� journal in the early 1930s, the author, then living in Istanbul, sent a passport and a short story to a friend in Paris. The short story was published, the passport lost. Nobody has ever identified the author.

Michael Henry Heim, winner of the 1998 PEN Center USA West Translation Award for�A Bohemian Youth by Josef Hiršal
(Northwestern, 1997), is a professor of Slavic languages and literatures at UCLA. His other translations for Northwestern University Press include Dubravka Ugrešic's�Fording the Stream of Consciousness and Felix Roziner's�A Certain Finkelmeyer.

Uneven, and only Mildly Interesting

This book had been so built up by other people who had read it that I expected more. The writing is uneven and the first two thirds of the book seem to have almost no relation to the last third.
The first two thirds of the book gave a few interesting details of life in Russia just before the Revolution, but other than that I foundit very uninteresting. It is not until alomst the end of the book that the element of cocaine is even introduced and when it is the book quickly winds to its unsurprising end.

About the Author

Michael S. Casey is Professor of the Humanities at Graceland University in Iowa. He holds a doctorate in Philosophy and writes extensively on military history. He is co-author of Teaching the Korean War: An Instructor's Handbook. As a member of the Kuwait-United States Defense Review Group, he helped to plan the rebuilding of Kuwait's post-war national defense, during which time he lived in Kuwait and worked with the top echelons of Kuwait's defense establishment.

Good Overview

This is a comprehensive documented history of Kuwait. Its really great if you want to know dates of the first settlers, how people emigrated form Saudi Arabia and the early conflicts of the tribes all the way to the discovery of petrol, how unjust Iraq's claim was over our land, pre-and post invasion days. The development of industry, and the negative effects of excessive subsidizing in the world's foremost welfare state. Yes, that what we are, a WELFARE state. I was disappointed however that the book didnt go into the detail i wanted (ya3ni it generally didnt name names and give the full story of immigration to our country) but it was very informative. oh, and it tells exactly what happened during the invasion, FOCUS ON APRIL GLASPI (US ambassador to Iraq before the invasion) PART ON JULY 25 1990 AND HER COMMENT TO SADDAM HUSSEIN AND YOU WILL SEE SHE SAID: " the US has NO OPINION on the Arab-Arab conflicts like your border disagreement with Kuwait". no opinion??? you swear?? and they invaded us less than a week later! draw your own conclusions! AAAND... unlike our social studies books books, it does give one instance of who killed who to get power. Get it if you are Kuwaiti, you should know this stuff!
But dont forget, not all of his facts are set in stone. There was a lot that was missing from this book and i got a definite feeling that Casey was avoiding "controversial topics".

Just Code Examples

I like and use the XMPP Framework but this book was not worth it. To get started with the XMPP Framework you can use the wiki: [...] This book adds little more explanation than what can be found in the wiki / source code and provides a huge amount of code examples that are not useful. Also the formatting in the book is really bad. I was looking for information on the more advanced topics but had to search for answers in the source code of the framework.

The XMPPFrameWork is outstanding!

Robbie Hanson, the author of the XMPP FrameWork has done an amazing job on his design. We have been using this framework for our SilentCircle IOS product for over a year and has been exceptionally reliable and easy to work with.. I highly recommend this and the book describing its usage.

I read Cell 2455 Death Row when I was in about the 9th grade, or about 1966. It made me consider life and where I needed focus my future decisions. I was making bad decidions.
Well written, can be disturbing. Having the fearful, future unknown, mind and hope of someone on death row and being able to document feelings and his history is extraordinary. A reread today gives me pause to appreciate my life and good choices I have made. Jim

A bone chilling look at a treacherous lifestyle

I opened the book at 7am one day and put it down only 2 times. The fiery true-to-life recollection of prison life seemed to flow from the pages in an eerie Twilight Zone type of way. Caryl Chessman puts life into perspective as he found misfortune and trouble around almost every corner. He highlights most of his antics and pranks that turned eventually for the worse. Escapes and hiding, re-capture and persecution integrated for his lifetime of crime and his final and ultimate punishment. The gas chamber in San Quentin prison. Read this book and see if you don't see a side of Caryl that ultimately could be a step or two away from where you are today.

By now you've probably heard that antioxidants are good for you, but a growing number of researchers are beginning to believe that adequate or even more-than-adequate amounts are absolutely vital to our health and well-being. This book by James F. Balch, M.D., author of the bestselling Prescription for Nutritional Healing, describes a wide range of antioxidant substances in food and extracted into supplements that can help prevent or conquer illness and even slow the aging process itself. As Balch points out, when our bodies turn oxygen into energy the reaction creates damaging byproducts known as free radicals, which "eat away" at us almost as rust does metal. Antioxidants help keep free radicals from forming and eliminate those already in the body, putting the brakes on at least some of this long-term damage. But while many people are aware of the antioxidant value of vitamins such as C and E, there are also powerful free-radical-scavenging substances in a wide variety of products-- including fish oils, tree barks, herbs, wine, and tea, as well as colorful fruits and vegetables. Because antioxidants may be more effective in combination, Balch makes a good case for taking concentrated antioxidant supplements as well as eating a diverse diet. I LOVE THE TOPIC AND GENERALLY ENJOY READING BOOKS IN THIS GENRE: THIS BOOK IS THE EXCEPTION

IN A NUTSHELL: WRITTEN IN A DUMBED-DOWN CONDESCENDING MANNER WITHOUT MUCH SUBSTANCE

Since the Author of this book is an M.D. I was rather shocked and disappointed with his style of writing which included making numerous unsubstantiated claims mixed in with very insulting and distracting humor. An earlier reviewer compared the text of this book with "reading the back of a cereal box" and sadly I must agree.

Also, the author has an annoying habit of quoting many other writers in the field, most often Dr. Michael Murray, which tended to reinforce my notion that one should be reading a different book on this very important and worthwhile topic.

There are obvious errors and ommisions within the text, the worst which is the author's constant compulsion for not referencing the results of the numerous studies that have been conducted and which do demonstrate the importance of anti-oxidants in our daily diets. Instead, he simply makes statements without any referencing. Somehow everything within this book is distilled down to anti-oxidants vs. free radicals which is an obvious oversimplification.

Repetitive, un-referenced and narrow-minded

As a well-read reviewer on this subject, perhaps I am being overcritical. However, I found his testimony throughout the book that the only purpose of antioxidant consumption is to desotry fre radicals to be missing the point of good nutrition. He tries to extrapolate all benficial qualities of antioxidant rich food to their free radical scavenging abilities, which he does not back up with valid scientific sources. He neglects the vast epidemiological studies attributing better health from of consumption of antioxidant-rich foods because of their high fiber, unsaturdated fats, and low cholesterol.
I was also irked by his too-common slip-ups in seemingly basic biochemistry and toxicology. I understand his thesis that free radicals are one of the primary contributors to disease, but he tries to extend this theory to situations in which free radicals pale in comparison to other carcinogens in terms of their disease-promoting potential. For example, ciagrette smoke contains a group of scientifcally-proven very potent carcinogens, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, that he neglects entirely in explaining smoke's toxicity. Of course, he says that cigarette smoke is carcinogenic because of its radical producing chemicals, which he chooses not to name.
In addition, he mistakenly says that alpha lipoic acid is an amino acid that is an integral part of an antioxidant enzyme, when in fact alpha lipoic acid is a lipid (and antioxidant itself). Lastly, I was concerned with his suggestion that people take oral supplements of antioxidant enzymes to render free radicals harmless, as the HCl and proteases of our stomach and small intestine would surely destory any activity of these "enzymes" before they can can catalyze the intended reaction.
There are many claims throughout the book that are not backed by any scientific data, the majority of which I cannot argue against due to my incomplete knowledge of the subject. However, the fact that on several instances I found his science not only un-referenced, but also wrong, stopped me from finishing the book. I might as well have read the back of a cereal box, on which marketers attempt to persuade kids why vitamins are good for them (and henceforth their product).
For a more holistic and factual review of good nutrition, try "Diet for a New America" by John Robbins.
