Preface to the Second Edition.

We are pleased to say that after ten more years of using this text we do not find reason to change the basic approach and methods of the teaching. We still use most of the same examples, which are now quite old, but that is the beauty of celestial navigation. It has not changed, so we do not benefit in any way from making all new examples, which would bring with them more chance of error in a book of many numbers.

We have, however, notably improved and expanded the book. Each section has been updated and reformatted for a clearer presentation, often in response to student questions over the years. New graphics have been added and older ones all updated. There is much new content in the text, especially in the In-Depth chapter, including more detailed discussion of the sailings and more background on the principles. New sections were added on general ocean navigation and optimizing the fixes. We have also updated the electronic navigation section, as most ocean navigators will also be using other tools besides celestial.

About the Author
David Burch, PhD, FRIN, is the Director of Starpath School of Navigation, which after 26,000 classroom students since 1979 switched to all online training in 2008. He is the author of 13 books and hundreds of magazine articles. He received the Institute of Navigation's Superior Achievement Award for outstanding performance as a practicing navigator. He is Fellow of the US Institute of Navigation as well as a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation in London. He has extensive ocean sailing experience covering much of the globe, and once held an elapsed time record for the Victoria to Maui Yacht Race that lasted for 16 years. On the academic side, he is a past Fulbright Scholar with a PHD in physics.

Great for practice, not so much for theory

This book presents a very thorough and descriptive discussion of the practice of taking, reducing, and plotting celestial sights so that you can fix your location on the sea (with other topics as well). It is a very practical course and for that I recommend it. You WILL be able to navigate by the heavens when you are done (with some sextant practice). However, it is a bit light on theory and for some people, like me, if they don't understand at least the basics of the theory, then it's hard for them to connect with the practical applications. If you are the kind of person that has to know "why" something works before you can remember "how" to do it, then you need more than this book. I actually did read the neat little primer, Celestial Navigation for Yachtsmen by Mary Blewitt before getting this course. Actually I read it twice because it's small, but the concepts are dense. It was an excellent preparation for this much more practical book on how to really use celestial navigation on a real ocean passage. If I hadn't read this first, I think I might have struggled with David Burch's book. Yet, if I had tried to actually practice celestial navigation armed only with Blewitt's book, I don't think I could have really done it either - it just doesn't provide enough detailed guidance. Burch's book anticipates all those little questions that a student would naturally have when he gets ready to actually take a sight and find a line of position. So, Burch's book is excellent, but get some kind of background in the geometic and mathematical theory first. Note: Starpath has on-line classes as well, and that may be where theory is explained, but the full program is much more expensive and this book is the foundation of the course, anyway.

My recomemndation to anyone learning celestial navigation for sailing, as I was, is to just get Blewitt's book and Burch's book, and then when you are done working through Burch's book, then go out and by the rest of the stuff, i.e. sextant, nautical almanac, sight reduction tables, etc. You will know exactly what you need to buy after working through his book. You do not need a sextant and any tables to complete this book - all information you need to learn how to use all the various tools of celestial navigation are contained in this book and its exhibits (with exception of standard plotting tools such as dividers, parallel rule, protractor, typical stuff you probably already have from coastal navigation. If not, the book tells you what you need in this area as well). Oh, and when you order the book, get some "universal plotting sheets" as well because you need them to practice plotting the results of the sample navigational exercises and the book does not provide these.

This is an outstanding practical guide to celestial navigation. Burch is a very good instructor. He has decided to focus on the "how" rather than the "why", even though as a physicist he could easily do the latter. This means you learn the exact steps to all the major activities of celestial navigation. The author provides clear examples and problems with detailed answers. He does touch on the key ideas of theory but in my opinion he is more interested in making sure the student can actually solve typical navigational problems of the type found underway. Finally a lengthy, in depth chapter is provided with many detailed points of practise that together are not found in any other text that I have seen. I strongly recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn celestial navigation

The best of my 5 Cel Nav books. Started as a complete novice. Now I can cel nav without calculator or GPS.

All five are good, but only one really walks you through the actual steps, with examples, of cel nav. I wish I saw this book first. The beginning has just the right amount of theory, and then he jumps into the sextant, spending time on the vernier, actual old-school plotting, and then specific examples, ie., noon sighting, sun sighting, moon, and stars. Then there is a thick section of detailed "extra study" material, more or less like an appendix, filled with tips and tricks of all sorts. Finally, there is a glossary, examples, problems, answers, and copies of the forms he suggests you use from his firm. He even covers topics like "short dip" sightings, to use on a lake or land, when you are practicing and can't get out to blue water. This is critical for all us beginners....

I am sure that if you go through this book carefully, work the problems, and so on, and then set up your cel nav station, you will be able to do a pretty good job of cel nav from start to finish without so much as a pocket calculator or GPS: just his material, an Almanac or equivalent, a good watch, and a pencil, paper and some plotting tools.

I started with the e-book although another reviewer complained about the reproduction of the figures and the difficulty jumping around in the book while working the problems. Like the other reviewer of the ebook, I bought the actual book, and continue to study from the ebook when the regular book is not convenient.

If you only have $30 to spend on Cel Nav literature, skip the rest, although they are all good, and go straight to Burch. The ebook is a good add-on, but not easy to work in, secondary to inherent problems with ebooks. Burch has managed to put a whole bunch more into one easy book than anyone else has.

I "guarantee" you won't be disappointed.......

About the Author
Boyd Morrison is an author, actor, engineer, and Jeopardy! champion. He started his career working on NASA's space station project at Johnson Space Center, where he got the opportunity to fly on the Vomit Comet, the same plane used to train astronauts for zero gravity. After earning a PhD in engineering from Virginia Tech, he used his training to develop eleven US patents at Thomson/RCA. Boyd then managed a video game testing group in Microsoft's Xbox division before becoming a full-time writer. For non-fiction thrills, he enjoys white water rafting, skiing, scuba diving, and bungee jumping. Boyd is also a professional actor, appearing in films, commercials, and stage plays. In 2003 he fulfilled a lifelong dream and became a Jeopardy! champion. He currently lives in Seattle with his wife.

CHAPTER 1

MEMORIAL DAY
8:41 A.M.

CAPTAIN MICHAEL ROBB OPENED his eyes and found himself lying on the cockpit floor. Heat washed over him as if the airliner had been plunged into a blast furnace, and multiple warning horns blared. Blood trickled from his brow, stinging his eye. For a second he lay there, dazed, wondering what had happened. Then he remembered. The impact.

He had just returned to the cockpit, swearing off coffee for the rest of the trip. It had been his third trip to the lavatory, and the flight from Los Angeles to Sydney wasn’t even halfway over. His copilot, Wendy Jacobs, a good twenty years younger than he, had smirked at him but said nothing. He had been about to climb back into his seat when a streak of light flashed by the airliner’s starboard wing.

Robb thought it was a lightning strike from the storm they were flying above, but then the plane was thrown sideways, as if batted away by a giant hand. A sonic boom blasted the plane, and he smacked into the bulkhead, his head and shoulder taking most of the blow.

He must have been out for only a few seconds. Though his mind was still fuzzy, his vision quickly came back into focus. Robb sat up and wiped the blood from his eye. The instrument panel was intact. Jacobs had disengaged the autopilot and grabbed the yoke, which she now fought for control. Robb pulled himself to his feet. He had no idea how badly he was injured, but he was moving. That was enough.

As Robb clambered into his seat, he glanced at the cabin differential pressure gauge. Its needle was pegged at zero. Explosive decompression.

Reflexively, he reached for the mask hanging to his left, years of training taking over. His shoulder protested the motion, and he winced in pain.

“Oxygen masks on, one hundred percent!” he shouted.

Robb pulled the mask over his head, and Jacobs did the same. The masks in the passenger compartment had already dropped automatically. He mentally raced through the possibilities for the blast. A terrorist bomb? Missile attack? Fuel tank explosion? To depressurize that fast, some of the passenger windows must have blown out, maybe an entire door. The aircraft was still flying though, so that meant the fuselage was intact.

With his attention focused on getting the airliner under control, there was no time for Robb to talk to the passengers. The flight attendants would have to deal with them. The best thing he could do for the passengers was to get the plane down to ten thousand feet, where there was breathable air.

He pushed the yoke forward and silenced the decompression horn, but another one continued to wail. The lights for the starboard engines flashed red, meaning both were on fire.

“Pull number three engine T-handle!” Robb barked out. He suppressed the panic edging into his voice.

Jacobs pulled the handle and pressed the button beneath it, extinguishing the fire. She glanced out the starboard window to make a visual check.

“Fire’s out on number three engine! Number four engine is completely gone!”

“Gone?”

“Sheared off from the pylon.”

Robb cursed under his breath. His 747–400 was certified to fly with only three engines, but with just the two port engines they’d be lucky to stay in the air.

He turned to Jacobs. Her face was ashen but otherwise professional.

“Issue the distress call,” Robb said.

Jacobs nodded, understanding the implications. Even if someone heard the radio call, it would make little difference. The best they could hope for was to report their position in case they had to ditch. She keyed the radio.

“Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! This is TransPac 823. We are going down. We are going down. We’ve lost both number three and number four engines. Our position is seventy-five miles bearing two four five from Palmyra VOR.”

No answer, just static.

“Activate the emergency transponder,” Robb said. He knew activating it was a useless procedure. They were beyond the range of any radar units.

“Setting transponder to 7700 in squawk emergency,” Jacobs replied.

As their rapid descent took the plane through thirty thousand feet, an unearthly glow bloomed within the cloud cover ten miles to their right. At first the clouds softened it, but then the light pierced them, shooting toward the stratosphere, for a moment brighter than the sun.

“What the hell?” Jacobs said.

A fireball rolled upward in the distinctive mushroom shape Robb had seen in countless photos. He gaped, mesmerized by the sight. Atomic weapons testing in the Pacific had been outlawed for years, and there were no volcanoes in this region of the ocean. What else could have caused such a massive explosion?

Whatever it was, the explanation didn’t matter.

“Roll left!” he yelled. Stabilizing the plane should have been his highest priority, but they had to get away from the blast zone.

“Rolling left,” came Jacobs’s response after only a second’s hesitation.

Robb just had to hope that he could ride out the shock wave and find someplace to land. They had passed over the Palmyra Atoll only ten minutes before, but the runway built during World War II had been abandoned decades earlier. Christmas Island, five hundred miles away, had the closest operational runway. Despite all the damage the plane had sustained, it was still flying. They might make it.

“Come on, you bastard!” Robb grunted as he strained at the controls.

The nose of the enormous plane came around slowly. Too slowly.

The blast wave from the explosion caught up with them and slapped at the plane from behind, heaving its tail up. A colossal crack of thunder hammered the aircraft. The windows shattered and wind howled through the cockpit. The number one engine was wrenched from its mounts, shearing half the port wing from the plane and setting the fuel tanks aflame. The plane plummeted like an elevator cut from its cable.

With two engines gone and another shut down, the airliner was mortally wounded. Thinking of the 373 men, women, and children in the plane—people who were his responsibility—Robb didn’t give up, but he had no more hope of flying it than one of the passengers. He battled the controls trying to level the plane, but it was a dead stick. Despite his efforts, the plane spun downward in a death spiral. By the time the airliner plunged through the lowest cloud layer, the altimeter read one thousand feet. For the first time in an hour, Robb could see the blue water of the Pacific.

Realizing that their fate was inevitable, Robb let go of the yoke and sat back. He held out his hand to Jacobs, who grasped it tightly with her own. Never much for religion, Robb nonetheless closed his eyes and found himself reciting the Lord’s Prayer. He was up to the words “Thy kingdom come” when the plane slammed into the ocean at over five hundred miles per hour.

The 2nd Wave Is More Powerful and Bigger Than The First in the return of Rogue Wave, a fantastic thriller

This incredibly fast-paced thriller first appeared in the Kindle Store in 2009, under the name "The Palmyra Impact." It was self-published by a totally unknown author, cost just a few dollars, and I thought I'd take a chance and sampled it. Liked that, bought the eBook.

Love it! So intense that, Kindle in hand, I was way beyond the edge of my seat by the middle of the book. I had to pace the house and read. Frankly, it was a huge relief to get to the end to see who survived and who didn't--no promises were made by the author.

Here's my review from June 2009:
A rip-roaring thriller, The Palmyra Impact (now Rogue Wave) tears off to a start with an asteroid's impact in the Pacific Ocean. The shock wave it triggers tests the tsunami warning system to its limits, and equally strains the nerves of the books' characters and its readers as disaster looms for the Hawaiian Islands.

Boyd Morrison's taut prose plummets the reader through a series of disasters, near misses and anguish for the fates of deftly drawn characters, some of whom readers will quickly take under their wings as new friends. As in all disasters, real or fictional, not all loved ones survive.

For sheer readability, thrills, plot complexity and plain old nail-biting fun, Morrison's book earns a place on the top shelf among thrillers of the year.

Now, in 2010: Simon and Schuster, impressed by Morrison's ebook sales for this book and two others, including The Ark, now for sale once more in the Kindle store, is now Morrison's publisher.

I'm re-reading Rogue Wave after over a year. Even though I know how it turns out, I am pacing again. Boyd's prose delivers relentless action.

A must read book for anyone who loves a nail biter of a thriller.

I think, based on his three books published--all of which I thoroughly enjoyed--that Boyd will one day reach the uppermost ranks of thriller writers. I think he belongs there right now, but the rest of the world of thriller lovers will just have to catch the wave when then do.

VERY good and exciting book!

First: believe everything you've hear about how incredibly fast this book is. Second: believe everything you've hear about how incredibly fast this book is. There are some books that are fast reads; `Rogue Wave' will make you read fast! It literally drags you from page to page because it's that type of non-stop action reading. I literally had to physically slow down because I was moving so fast. This book deserves 100% of all the over the top praise it is getting. I was wondering myself what in the world could have caused such a wave, and when I found out... man!

The beginning was full throttle as Kai (love that name) has to determine if there is a tsunami, how powerful it is if there indeed is one, and do they need to evacuate. I laughed at the politics and how, no matter WHAT the emergency, politicians have to bear their 9-headed Hydra. Always and forever I guess. My only beef came near the late-middle of the book. I love disaster/annihilation novels, always have. What drives me crazy are the stupid heroics of the people in them. I know, I know, I know I'm Mr. Heartless. ' But I found that in this book, it drove me bonkers because it was one right after the other after the other after the other! I mean come on! All jokes aside, it did seem like a bit much for the "I'm going to save her/him", or "what was that noise, I need to save someone else". Either heed the warning or die idiots.

So that was a slight hiccup for me. The ending however... thrillers aren't supposed to be emotional right? Can we agree on that? I mean emotions are for books like `Lovely Bones', `Flowers for Algernon', any boring book that Oprah picks, or book #7 in the `Dark Tower' series. Not a book about a freaking killer wave. Apparently Boyd missed a board meeting because he damn sure didn't get that memo. Two huge things happened that caught me totally unawares and left me and my heart considering a lawsuit. Simply put, I loved this book. Get one for yourself, get one for your friend, get one for your enemy, get one for your wife, get one for your weekend girlfriend, and throw one in every stocking of your book lover friends this Christmas. An incredible sophomore (I think) book by Mr. Morrison.

Another thriller from Boyd Morrison

Another technically rich, page turning book from Boyd Morrison.

The Palmyra Impact requires no willful suspension of disbelief. The story is masterfully told so that you are right there, with the characters, and can see the story unfold before your eyes. A terrifyingly great ride.

Clancy, Grisham, and Cook can plan for retirement. Boyd Morrison sets a new standard for thrillers. I am impatiently awaiting the next book.

Royal Navy sailor's life aboard destroyer, on convoy to Russia - a great read about a really tough voyage and way of life

"The Tinfish Run" is the first in a series of three featuring the British Royal Navy in WW2, by author Ronald Bassett - the others are "The Pierhead Jump" and "The Neptune Landing".
The focus is on the events aboard ship and ashore as we follow principal character Signalman "Lobby" Ludd. I have read a lot of naval fiction, and these 3 books really stand out - for authentic atmosphere and dialog, gripping stories, and the right amount of humor (especially Ludd's and the other sailors' misadventures ashore). A pity that these 3 novels are not more widely known and popular. I rate them among the very best in this genre.
Ronald Bassett's wartime Royal Navy service informs the realism of these stories.
Highly recommended to readers with naval interests, or anyone who might like a really good story about sailors' life in the RN during WW2 - rough at the best of times, but with real humanity amid the hardship and peril.
There is a comprehensive glossary of RN sailor's expressions at the back of the book, which will be useful for those unfamiliar with any of them.

Needs to be read

Anybody who has never served in combat under harsh conditions needs to read this, or something equivalent, at least once in their lives, and remember every word of it anytime they begin to consider supporting armed conflict.

Those who have seen it firsthand will almost never talk about it, and the only way to really get a sense of it is to read a factual account like this first-hand narrative-style account of a North Atlantic - or more accurately, Arctic or Russian - convoy in 1942.

The working-class and enlisted sailor-class slang is heavy sledding but not so dense that one cannot get the gist of any scene. Especially compelling is the huge gulf between civilians in England and men home on leave. The people at home are preoccupied with their privations - getting a little sugar or fat, running out of gas and coal in winter. They simply cannot grasp the magnitude of the gulf between the difficulties of their lives and that of the sailors on active duty, and the men on leave simply cannot explain to them how trivial it is to complain of a poorly heated house or meal of beans and toast, and so they listen in silence.

Very Good.

A pretty good sea story, based on, to some extent, the travails of convoy PQ 17. It is told, for a change, through the eyes of the enlisted crew rather then the officers. Much of the slang and lower deck argot was new to me, so I would have found it helpful to have had the glossary at the front of the book rather than at the end. What I found most difficult to believe was Lobby Ludd's complete lack of social skills and awareness. It was almost as if he had been raised on a desert island rather than in London. Nevertheless, the tale was well told, and worth the time invested in reading it.

An excellent guide to Russian-style programming, very well thought-out.

If you're familiar with Takano's theories or programming at all, you know he's a fan of Russian style programming, and some of his stuff can be a bit "high-brow", meaning lots of complicated programs, prescribed volumes and intensities, etc.

The book starts with a basic review of biology, chemistry, adaptation to training, etc. Being a biology/chemistry geek, much of this wasn't particularly new or interesting to me, but I think it's a good review and probably needs included in the book. If these ideas are new to you, you will probably find it quite helpful, as it does establish a theoretical basis for much of the programming to follow.

Mr. Takano is a big believer in Russian programming, specifically Medvedyev. He continues to categorize lifters by Class III, Class II, Class I, Candidate for Master, etc... He includes training rational and sample programming for each class of trainee. This is far more detailed than anything posted on his website.

For example, in Class III training, he covers the theory behind the training, recommend exercises, volume and intensity, long-term planning, etc. He also provides a sample 4-week loading program and 4-week pre-competition program. I found this training to very closely follow the Medvedyev programming. But if you've ever read the Medvedyev stuff, you know it can sometimes read like stereo instructions. It is not well organized. Mr. Takano is very good at taking this information and laying it out in understandable and applicable ideas and programs.

After going through each class of lifter specifically, Mr. Takano ends the book with discussion of restoratives, diet, and some coaching guidance and tips. The discussion on restoratives focuses on non-pharmacological therapies like massage, jacuzzi, contrast showers, etc. I found this section helpful, but would have preferred a more evidence-based discussion. For example, why exactly is a pine needle bath going to help me? Has this been studied, or am I just going to smell like pine all day and still be sore?

Overall, I'd say it's an excellent book. While I don't say one method of programming is absolutely superior over another, I tend to think the Russian/Chinese method of programming has produced a greater number of champions in the modern drug-tested era. And from what I have seen, there also does seem to be a reduced incidence of major injury with Russian programming. Regardless, the book is quite informative, and I would recommend it if you're at all interested in weightlifting programming.

The Book Is Absolutely Essential!

I just finished Bob Takano's stellar book, Weightlifting Programming: A Winning Coach's Guide. Coach Takano is essentially a demi-god, having been inducted into the USA Weightlifting Hall of Fame as well as being a USAW Senior International Coach. He served as head coach for the international team for many years and produced many quality weightlifters for the USA. When Greg Everett released that he was publishing this book for Coach Takano, I naturally jumped at the opportunity to learn and pre-ordered his book on the pre-release date (I know ... I'm a nerd).

One of my weakest points as an ever-learning coach is the concept of programming. With so many philosophies to choose from, it can be easy to get lost and feel overwhelmed. This book did a phenomenal job at not only explaining an approach to programming, but Coach Takano did a wonderful job at explaining why you choose certain exercises during certain phases of a weightlifter's career. The ease in which he explains the concept of Long Term Athletic Development is incredible. In my pursuit of higher learning, I never encountered someone that was able to break it down into such easy terms. His integration of mathematics, statistics, biology, kinesiology, exercise science, and physics of how they're used in a coach's pursuit of the perfect program for his individual lifters is flawless. There was never a time where I had to re-read a sentence because I couldn't understand the material presented - that only happened because I actually wanted to out of pure fascination and satisfaction. Lastly, his writing style is refreshing. You can tell he is a learned, 40-year biology teacher. It makes me wish I had someone like that in high school or college when I was learning such a key subject.

This book should really be on any person's list to read if you are in strength and conditioning, be it the garage warrior or an experienced coach. Your desire to continue learning and developing yourself should NEVER end, regardless of experience. There are key points that those within the aforementioned range of experience can benefit from. He is not shy at pointing out fundamental flaws in the US' athletic development system and presenting his theory as to why we continue to have an issue with steroids and performance enhancers. His statistics demonstrate just how important quality repetitions are. Regardless if your athlete is a weightlifter or a wrestler, the "perfect practice makes perfect" principle exudes from this well-written book and can be applied to any part of your life. You can see a weightlifter's average intensity remain constant over time, but his volume increases significantly through each stage, therefore making me come to the conclusion that it is absolutely critical to increase the amount of perfect repetitions as the athlete continues to reach top-end strength levels and develops into a high-level athlete. Without it, the athlete won't be able to apply those new strength gains in whatever sport he/she plays, which essentially makes that athlete strong for no good reason. It also compounds the notion that to be good at one movement, you have to drill it perfectly 10,000 times and not necessarily at maximum intensity - the very same theory I heard when I was a wrestler. Pick up this book today!

A vague and reworded discussion on the Soviet style of training.

Pros:
-Takano talks about GPP (General physical preparation) of youth and junior lifters
- Introduces the classifications system used by the Soviets to group lifters according to their snatch and clean and jerk totals
- Suggestions on exercise selection and and frequency based on this class system
- Has charts to match height and gender to weight classes
- Has an interesting recap on the history of Weightlifting in the past hundred years until recently.

Cons:
- Lacks mention of concurrent training (combination of aerobic and anaerobic activities in training)
- Introduces the concept of General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) but fails to explain how it applies to weightlifting with examples, and therefore, doesn't emphasize it's importance as a concept in training, programming, and periodization.
- Fails to mention the three basic energy systems (Phosphagen, Glycolytic, and Oxidative) that control where we get our energy to perform exercises.
- No mention of the neuromuscular system (Motor unit + Muscle unit) and how it deals with resistance training or how resistance training can alter the body physiologically
- Lack of discussion on "specificity" on both exercise selection and energy systems
- No mention of stress/ recovery/ adaptation as an important concept that ALL coaches must know to create an efficient program.

Summary:
An interesting read but by far NOT A COMPLETE book on programming. This book is essentially the Sparknotes of books translated by Andrew Charniga on Soviet style training manuals. This book is more of a template with some minor explantation of what ins and outs of how to use it, but still leaves me asking many questions on "Why this", "Why that", "What about this"?

Would I recommend this book?
I would. I had the PDF and bought the book because I love weightlifting and I am open minded to all styles and training methods to the competitive weightlifter. However, This should not be your last programming book for weightlifting or training, as there are a lot of very important training concepts not discussed in Takano's book.
