Very Good Overview of the Genres

Organized by genre (yet the genres are presented in historical order), Oxford scholar William Allan gives a nice overview that allows grad students and others to take a refreshing look at the big picture.

Excellent little volume

I picked this up out of curiosity, aware that it is practically impossible to cover such an enormous historical, cultural and intellectual terrain in so few pages. But I was surprised at what Allan achieved in this little book. It speaks to his cleverness -- and ability to be careful and concise -- that the book is so good. It is lucid and clear but chock-full of insights, even though space is at a premium. Just about anything he turns his attention to is illuminated. He talks intelligently about genre, authors, manuscript transmission of texts, sources and, last but not least, the content of various works: from drama to poetry to military history to epic and so on and on. Anyone interested in this subject will value this little volume a great deal.

Richard D. Phillips (MDiv, Westminster Theological Seminary) is the senior minister of Second Presbyterian Church of Greenville, South Carolina. He is a council member of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals, chairman of the Philadelphia Conference on Reformed Theology, and coeditor of the Reformed Expository Commentary series.

Short...but maybe too short for these controversial issues

Easily one of the most controversial doctrines in Scripture, Phillips tackles the issues of election and predestination head on in this short and concise booklet as part of the Basics of the Reformed Faith Series. With Scripture as his guide, Phillips lays out a compelling case for the Reformed view of salvation and addresses a number of the accusations which have been leveled against this position over time. Phillips also notes that the "Reformed" view could probably be more accurately described as the traditional Christian view since the election of the saints and the sovereignty of God was strongly supported by the earliest of the church fathers including Augustine. And, while the doctrine is old, so is the controversy: Augustine had Pelagius, Luther had Erasmus, Calvin had Arminius and the debate continues today!

While the booklet is easy-to-read and short, I was hoping that even in this cursory examination of the doctrines that Phillips would explore the opposing position and not merely the fallacies commonly leveled against this position. I've enjoyed every booklet in this series and this one is no exception, but it really wasn't as helpful or informative as I had hoped.

What Are Election and Predestination? Richard Phillips tackles this thorny question with a biblical mind and precision. Phillips begins with the doctrine of election which he describes as "the foundation on which the salvation of every believer rests: God's own free and gracious choice of us."

Phillips rightly notes that election takes place before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:4). The author makes a strong case for the covenant of redemption where the Father and Son come into covenant in eternity past. The Son voluntarily agrees to redeem the elect of God by dying on the cross. The Father in turn, promises the Son the salvation of all the elect, those whom he chose in eternity past.

The author is quick to point out that the doctrine of election is not derived from the pen of a theologian. Rather this doctrine is the teaching of God. He cites numerous Scriptures to bolster his point and argues that since this doctrine emerges in Scripture, God's people must receive it.

Since some people maintain that the doctrine of election leads to pride, Phillips seeks to press home the opposite point, namely, this doctrine in reality leads to humility. He cites A.W. Pink approvingly: "The truth of God's sovereignty ... removes every ground for human boasting and instills the spirit of humility in its stead. It declares that salvation is of the Lord - of the Lord in its origination, in its operation, and in its consummation ... And all this is most humbling to the heart of man, who wants to contribute something to the price of his redemption and do that which will afford ground for boasting and self-satisfaction."

Another typical objection to the doctrine of election is that it promotes lazy Christians. Phillips eagerly notes that nothing could be further from the truth. Again he leads the reader to numerous Scripture reference that lead the believer to the pursuit of holiness. He cites Martyn Lloyd-Jones: "Because we have been chosen to holiness we must and will become holy ... According to Paul we are not chosen with the possibility of holiness, but to the realization of holiness ... Being `chosen' and being `holy' are inseparable ... God, who has chosen you to holiness, will make you holy ..."

Some may hold that the doctrine of election leads to presumption. However, Phillips maintains that election actually promotes and encourages assurance. "If we can say to God," writes Phillips, "that we trust in Jesus, then God tells us that our faith is grounded on the solid rock of his eternal election ... Election gives assurance not to unbelief but to faith; it provides God-given confidence of our security in the sovereign grace of God." Ultimately, the doctrine of elections give glory to God, the glory that rightly belongs to him alone.

Phillips rightly makes a contrast between election and predestination. "God elects persons and predestines things." It is in this context that the author refutes the so-called notion of election according to foreknowledge. He adds, "But this concept (election according to foreknowledge) nullifies the very idea of election; it renders pointless the teaching that Paul is so clearly trying to convey, namely, that salvation rests on God's own character and purpose."

The author includes a brief section that addresses the issue of God's sovereignty and human responsibility - both of which are taught in God's Word. Phillips writes, "The Bible asserts both predestination and human responsibility without reconciling them, and we must be willing to leave it at that." These twin truths are not, as some have supposed, "parallel lines that meet in eternity." At this point, we must simply embrace both biblical realities and be comfortable with mystery.

The section on predestination responds to the two primary arguments that are advanced by our Arminian friends, namely, that predestination is unfair and it is incompatible with human responsibility. Phillips argues against these notions in a winsome and theologically precise way. James Boice is helpful here: "It is not justice we want from God; it is grace. And grace cannot be commanded. It must flow to us from God's sovereign purposes decreed before the foundation of the world, or it must not come at all."

Richard Phillips has written an excellent defense of the doctrine of election and predestination. He fairly and graciously overcomes the arguments that are so typical in a debate where one experiences more heat than light. I highly recommend this resource to those who struggle with this doctrine as well as the convinced.

There is a strong movement in America that is returning to our Reformed theological roots. Richard Phillips' short treatment of this subject serves as a basic introduction to the doctrines of grace and should be utilized by anyone who struggles (as I did for over two years) with these doctrines. Not For Me

He is a refugee, a Zetithian without a planet and one of the last of his kind since his world was blown out of the galaxy by a jealous, sadistic husband. He is revered as a sexual dynamo. It's both his job, and, as he and his brethren are tasked with saving his kind from extinction by reproducing in quantity, his calling. And he's gotten very, very rich from it. Women from all over the universe pay just about anything for a few hours in his bed, for a chance to bear his children. He has five hundred of them, now, but his duty is not yet finished.

That's why he's on Terran. Human women are known for being intensely attracted to his kind. He already had several appointments to further spread his seed. And then, intending nothing more salacious than a simple meal, Tarq Zulveidinoe enters the restaurant where Lucinda Force works as a waitress for her demanding father, and life will never be the same for him again.

She smells so good. It's unlike anything he's ever scented before, and he wants her madly. She may even be his mate. Her scent has him ready to pound nails and his fangs are ready to nip at her skin. But he is not worthy of her. Of that he has no doubt. And even though she wants him to sire her children, she doesn't want to keep him.

If only he had the time to try to convince her.

Lucy can't even look at Tarq without wanting him. Who could? He's gorgeous, built, and charming. His reputation as a galaxy-hopping love machine is legendary. He doesn't even charge women to sleep with him anymore, he's so rich. He just wants to reproduce, to increase the numbers of his race.

Fortunately, that works out nicely for Lucy. At almost thirty, she's desperate for children, but her father keeps her mired in indentured servitude and won't even let her date, let alone marry and have children. She's still a virgin, for pity's sake. But when the deliciously appealing Tarq asks her to call him, to be with him, she decides to grab for her future with both hands.

She'll have Tarq impregnate her, then she'll flee her imposing father, find her happiness, and start her life for real as she raises her children. And if she'll never forget the Zetithian who made her heart happy, well, it's not like he hasn't a string of lovers in the galaxy. She knows he'd never want her for life. She's too plain, too provincial, too...Lucy...to ever hold onto the man she so quickly and irrevocably fell in love with.

There are some books that just aren't good fits for me, and this one is one of them. I didn't have a problem with it being the eighth book in an existing series. It read fine as a stand-alone. Unfortunately, little else in the book appealed, despite me sort of liking the Zetithian backstory and enjoying the external plot threads in the second half of the book.

The biggest problem I had with the story was the relationship conflict between Tarq and Lucy. Not only was it something that could have been easily resolved with just a smidgen of honest communication between them, but it was belabored throughout the entire book. Mentioned so often, in fact, that it lent the narrative an overall feeling of repetition and made it hard not to toss my Kindle against the wall.

He loves her, but he thinks he's stupid because he can't read and he's bedded more women than an NBA basketball team (to the nth power). She's all things good and kind and would never want to be his mate. She loves him, but she's plain and ordinary, and could never hold the attention of someone as worldly and experienced as he. He would never want to stay with her. These insecurities are brought up again and again, ad nauseam. And despite the loving actions of both towards each other, neither finds the stones to even broach the subject with the other. This is not my idea of scintillating romantic conflict.

It wasn't until the second half of the book that some external conflict elements were introduced and the plot expanded beyond the romance. Some of those elements were quite nice, but I would have appreciated a bit more depth and detail. It served, though, to lessen the constant mentions of Tarq's and Lucy's insecurities, even if it didn't extinguish them completely. I wish it had.

There were other issues I had with the book, but those were comparatively minor when held up against the relationship problems. Still, the dialogue and the character definition were lacking in sophistication. I kept feeling like I was reading about a couple of horny teenagers with the way some of the characters thoughts and actions were represented. The sex was in no way adolescent, though. It was frequent and descriptive. It was also a bit odd for me, in part because of a Zetithian's physiological differences from a human. In part because of some of the descriptive passages.

Wow. Yeah. That's...well...more scary than sexy to me, no matter how nice Tarq's snard (yes, that's the Zetithian word for his ejaculate) tastes (like a hot fudge sundae, apparently). And that wasn't the only disturbing thing about his body or his talents. Practically prehensile manly bits are nice in theory, but kind of disturbing in context.

After eight books, I have to assume that Brooks has a wide following, that there are many fans of this series. I wish her nothing but the best for the continued success. After Stud, however, I can't say I'll be along for the ride. This one just wasn't my cup of tea.

Getting Better with each new book

The 8th book in the series, Cheryl Brooks continues to titillate readers' imagination with her wonderful Zithitians. Forget Captain Kirk and the Orion Slave girls. The Zithitian men rule the galaxy with their sexual prowess.

Born with a reading disability, Tarq believes the he was only good for one thing - being a stud and having as many children as he can with as many willing women. After all, the Zithitian race is almost extinct.

He would have continued on being a stud for hire until he met Lucy. Taken for granted by her family and bullied all her life, Lucy has her own self-worth issues. But a dalliance with Tarq proved to be a turning point in her life. But before these two lovers can find their happily ever after, they have to face obstacles - real and imagined.

In STUD, Cheryl Brooks returns her readers to a romantic story. Fans of Cat Star Chronicles have been brought to the far reaches of the galaxy. In VIRGIN, the 7th book, Ms Brooks even dealt with interplanetary politics.

But STUD is more personal, as we see the hero Tarq struggle with his disability. We also see how verbal abuse made Lucy very insecure. Yet against all odds, these two found to courage to leave their comfort zone so that they can live without being afraid.

Ms Brooks is still on a philosophical bent in STUD, and by doing so, she gave the Zithitian world another dimension.

This book is rated M for Mature due to sex.

these are really good very hard to put down and even when you know where the story will go it is a page turner. As long as you like sex in your reading you will like the Whole Cat Star chronicles line

Disappointing

This book assumes some knowledge of Spring, mainly dependency injection and bean configuration. Knowing a bit about the MVC web pattern will help. This book started out strong until the latter half of chapter 4, specifically page 91 where it tries to demonstrate how to use SpEL to create your own login conditions. Up to this point, all the examples in the book worked fine. You could generate the code and see the results described in the text. From page 91 on however, the code would not work. I spent many hours trying to get it to work with no success. I tried using the downloadable source code which was very confusing as there were duplicate files in different directories and it was hard to tell which to use. Also, when you download the source code, you get several zip files named by chapter (e.g., ch01.zip, ch04.zip, ch05.zip...). When I unzipped ch04.zip I expected to get a ch04 directory but got a ch05 directory further adding to the confusion. There was no ch03.zip or ch02.zip available to look for ch04 code. This is typical of many books I've read. There is often errors and confusion in the source code as to different versions of files available. This book is no exception. I did contact the author as is encouraged in the preface. He answered my first question but after that did not respond. If I had to judge the book on the first 3 chapters I would have given it a 5 star rating. But when the more complicated material came in with chapter 4, the book failed miserably. I have not even gotten to the most complex part, but as it builds on the sample application in chapter 4, I don't have high expectations. For these reasons I give this book a one. It is a shame, it started out strong, but it is difficult to learn a complex subject like this when you have to debug the examples in the book. I understand not giving solutions to exercises, but examples used in a book should work and since this is not a class and we don't have access to a T.A., we should not have to debug problems as "exercises to the reader". ** I initially rated this book at one star. I have now been able to get a good part of the code that wasn't running to run so I am upping the rating accordingly. There is still a SpEL expression the book indicates to use that throws an exception as unable to interpret. Some of the code I was able to get running in a previous Spring Security example I had written. I am now in chapter 5. If more of the code runs without much trouble I will up the rating further as the explanations are usually good. Update: I finished chapter 5 and the code there ran, but not without some issues including some typos in the code listings, mis-labled listings, a bad web.xml (if you follow instructions in book by page 130 your web.xml will be DTD based and needs to be xml schema based). Also, on page page 137 you need to issue the command "mvn package" to compile, but the author does not mention this. In chapter six the section on openId authorization will not work as the book example used OpenId.net as the openid provider and OpenId.net has been shut down since Feb. 1, 2014. I was able to use the example in the spring source code samples/openid directory. I copied the files and modified the configuration to use the default login pages and got it to work with Yahoo and Google as the openid providers. The x509 authentication code will not run as it relies on the genkey goal of the keytool-maven-plugin and this has been deprecated since vesion 1.2. I tried to go back to version 1.1 and got by this problem, but then got an error indicating the keystore was no longer good or the password was bad. Also, the code in the CAS authentication section on page 190 can not be run as it also depends on the genkey option. So the last two major sections of chapter 6 can not be run as presented in the book. Update: I am reducing the review of this book to 2 stars. I have just finished going through the chapter on access control lists. There are too many issues to list in detail but there are several discrepancies between the code listed in the text and the code downloaded from the books's website. While the code from the book's website will run, it is the last version of the code in the chapter (the code is developed as you go) and still does not quite run as described in the book. This is very frustrating as in my opinion access control lists are one of the most important part of Spring Security. It would have been nice to have an example that you develop step by step that runs as described. I also found the descriptions in the chapter confusing, for example when configuring AclAuthorizationStrategyImpl the authority "ROLE_ADMIN" is used in the text while "ROLE_ADMINISTRATION" is used in the downloaded source with no explanation of this difference or how it relates to a user's role given as either ROLE_ADMIN or ROLE_USER. Very confusing. I am left to try to find a clearer example of this, one possible source is at [...]. But at this point I think I am giving up on this book due to total frustration. I made it into the first example in chapter 8, had trouble running the UserInserter standalone program and then got frustrated and gave up. I will probably read through some of the rest of the chapter, but since it depends on running UserInserter I don't think I'll run any more code. Overall the book has some good info but you will be very frustrated trying to get a lot of the code to run, even the downloaded code.

In depth explanation of spring security concepts

though now spring security 4 is out but with the absence on any good books for it, i tried giving this a shot. Its about 3.1 but i have to say this is probably my best book so far on spring security. All the magic of underlying spring security infrastructure is actually explained and not just told be black box. It gave me the confidence to go through the 4.0 spring security documents. I am just hoping that next version of book covering latest spring 4.0/1 comes out soon.

My favorite immunology review source

We get this book free through our med school library, so I thought I'd give it a shot in reviewing for our immunology final. This quickly became my favorite review book. First aid is okay, but doesn't go into enough detail for the test. This book doesn't go into as much detail as the lecture, but it's great for review. It was two weeks exactly between the first day of immunology lecture and our comprehensive immunology exam, so something concise was needed. I also wouldn't use this to learn out of the first time, at least for immunology, because it seems to jump around a lot and talk about important topics before they are explained, but of course it is intended to be a review. I highly recommend it, and I will update my review after our microbiology module.
