About the Author

James G. Cappuccino is a retired professor emeritus of microbiology from the Department of Biology of the State University of New York at Rockland Community College in Suffern, New York. He received his B.S degree from Seton Hall University in 1951, his M.S degree (1955) and his Ph.D. (1957) in microbiology from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He was the author and co-author of numerous papers in the area of cancer research, and was a member of the faculty of the Sloan Kettering Division of the Graduate school of Medical Sciences at Cornell University where he taught microbiology from 1957-1970. From there, he taught microbiology, parasitology and clinical chemistry at SUNY Rockland until 2008. He was awarded the status of emeritus professor in 2012. In 1991 he was the recipient of the Chancellor’s award from the State University of New York for Excellence in Teaching. He is an emeritus member of the�American Society for Cancer Research (ASCR) and an emeritus member of American society for Microbiology (ASM). When not writing he enjoys spending time with his wife Elaine and their family at their summer home at the New Jersey shore. He�also enjoys theater, literature, and the quiet hour in his wood working shop.

Chad T. Welsh holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Louisville, School of Medicine, also an M.S. and B.S. in Biology from Middle Tennessee State University.� Currently he is the Chair of the Division of Biological and Earth Sciences at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO where he has the privilege of teaching Microbiology, both for non-majors and majors, Cellular Immunology, Parasitology, and many other courses since 2010.� His research interests fall within bacteriology, eukaryotic cell biology, and immunology, focusing primarily on intracellular eukaryotic signals in response to pulmonary bacterial pathogens.� His mentored research projects with his students have spanned the interest areas of soil microbial ecology, immune stress responses in collegiate athletes, oral bacterial flora communities, and many others.

A terrific real-world story for anyone who wants to be inspired, and full of great tips for artists and entrepreneurs

Jay-Z's contemporary rags-to-riches story is a more detailed, thorough, insightful, and powerful story than any kind of fiction you might read in an inspirational genre. This book is terrific reading for artists and entrepreneurs, especially, although anyone who wants to be inspired, as well as anyone with interest in his music, would enjoy it.

The book consists of lyrics "decoded," where Jay-Z explains both where the song ideas came from and the way all the lyrics are connected to each other, as well as portions of his real-world story, rising from the Marcy Projects to a best-selling artist competitive with the Beatles in terms of how many #1 albums they've had.

In particular interest to me were the chapters regarding his break-out crossover hit, "Hard Knock Life," and how Jay-Z had the realization that "Annie's story was my story." Jay-Z applies this knowledge to building a brand and identity for himself, which led to his pop crossover success on the charts.

Those kinds of insights, from a man who self-transformed into a superstar, are crucial for artists, entrepreneurs, and anyone out struggling with personal identity and their own success struggles.

I highly recommend this book. If I were a business professor or music teacher, I would make this required reading for students.

Moment of Clarity

Ask anyone who was influenced by hip hop culture & music and Jay-Z has a place on their top 5 dead or alive rappers list. If not, then they deserve to be slapped. The same applies to this book as it is hands down the best hip hop book I've read to date. A very strong statement indeed.

The beauty of Decoded lies in the way it is written. The main focus is the music. The main focus is the lyrics. Instead of chronologically detailing experiences from childhood to fame, Decoded approaches it differently. Each of the 14 chapters starts with a different personal life event. Jay-Z then identifies 3-4 songs he recorded (most often on different albums), which were inspired by this particular life event. He then goes through these songs line by line, stanza by stanza, lyric by lyric breaking down the specific meaning, inspiration and back story of each lyric.

This process is nothing short of miraculous.

Via this process, the reader inevitably picks up on meanings that you've completely missed out on for years. Being spoon fed all of the double entendre's, metaphors and overall witty word play changes your overall view on these songs. Songs you originally thought were "just okay" are transformed into classics. Songs you previously thought were "classics" into are transformed into timeless masterpieces.

To enhance the experience, I strongly recommend listening to the music immediately before reading the lyrics. Pre-listening online (and for free) allows the reader to read the lyrics with rhythm and fully absorb and appreciate the complex rhyme patterns and the overall skill Jay-Z has.

Jay-Z's music allows the listener to walk away feeling empowered. Decoded embodies this aspect. Decoded sheds new light on the music and is hands down the best hip hop book I've read.

Opened my mind

I happened to catch an episode of Oprah a few weeks ago when she was in Australia and Jay-Z was a guest on her show. They talked about his book, Decoded, and how it changed the way she thought about Jay-Z and rap in general. A Jay-Z fan, I was intrigued and purchased Decoded for my Kindle.

Decoded was the perfect title and conveys multiple meanings. Jay-Z has the lyrics to many of his songs "decoded". The lyrics are seen in corresponding chapters with an extensive footnote section where he explains why he wrote some of the more cryptic lines. But more than just decoding his song lyrics, Jay-Z decoded many more issues for me: his early life, the drug culture, his business dealings, his philosophies on the music biz, politics, and why rap is so misunderstood by so many.

I came away from this book with a new appreciation for Jay-Z...his frankness and lack of apologies for his thug past, the affect of his father's abandonment, the intricacies of his lyrics, his business-savvy attitude and his apparent understanding of the world around him. But perhaps the biggest thing I came away with is a respect for Jay-Z the man. He's intelligent, articulate, and talented as well as paranoid (self described) and private. Rather than writing raps, he would speak them and transcribe them. In 6th grade, he was reading at a 12th grade level. He has a photographic memory. And whether it was by dealing drugs or having a rap career, Jay-Z strove to be the best at his game.

For people expecting a tell-all memoir, you will be disappointed in the book. Beyonce's name doesn't even appear. There are also many, many pages of song lyrics throughout the book that probably appeal to the most diehard fans but I skipped a lot of them. Decoded is a great read, and a book I expect will expand some people's minds (at least a little).

Detailed Commentary from Dispensationalist View w/Others' Acknowledged

This commentary on the Old Testament book of Daniel is noteworthy for its detail and its coupling of the author's dispensational interpretation with presentation and analyses of alternate interpretations and their inadequacies. But for the endtimes ("eschatology") novice, I'd suggest first reading Renald Showers' Daniel commentary, 'The Most High God,' since it's purpose does not include critiquing other views, but stays focused on a concise, readable, less overwhelming exposition of Daniel. (In case you're unfamiliar with Daniel altogether, Walvoord and Christians of dispensationalist theology consider Daniel to be the "Key to Prophetic Revelation" as title says, because Daniel chapters 2 and 7 give the broad panorama of Gentile kingdoms (including the final one to come), and most importantly, because Daniel chapter 9:24-27 tells of God's post-Babylonian captivity plan for Israel, including the upcoming 7-year period commonly referred to as "the tribulation," when the Antichrist reigns, and which is foundational for an understanding of the book of Revelation which details this period.)

To understand Daniel, not a specific interpretation of Daniel, read this book

The realm of biblical prophecy is filled with books pushing a specific interpretation of the author's favorite scriptures. This book is a welcome exception to that rule. Although the author unapologetically belongs to the dispensationalist school of thought, he is not determined to convince you of a specific interpretation within that school. He is not specifically pre or mid tribulational. He is not trying to inspire you with the soon coming of Christ. He is trying to interpret the book of Danial accurately and well. He accomplishes his purpose.

I read this book over 30 years ago, when I was a teenager, and it's tone and methodology has permeated my life every since. I am now a Bible teacher myself and have come back to this book when I wish to give an over-view of the book of Daniel to my students.

A fine vegan cookbook

Some of the concepts and preparation methods are dated (you can't home-can in tin cans any more - I don't think) but I have tried some of the recipes, and they taste MUCH better than they look and since they have no animal products, they take a long time to go stale.

For me, the main obstacle in trying the main dishes is the extremely long cooking times - as long as 6 hours, and using a Crock-Pot probably won't work. As for breads and side dishes, no problem.

About the Author
Beth Pateman is Interim Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Health Education in the Institute for Teacher Education, College of Education, University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM). She received her H.S.D. and M.P.H. from Indiana University, with emphases in school and college health and public health education. Dr. Pateman has taught health education in grades K-8 and at the university level. Before coming to Hawaii, Dr. Pateman worked with the Division of Adolescent and School Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where she served as the CDC Project Officer for the first School Health Policies and Programs Study (SHPPS) in 1994. Dr. Pateman also taught in the School of Public Health, Emory University, and in the Department of Health Science Education, University of Florida. She received the Distinguished Service Award from the American School Health Association in 2000.

Cynthia Symons is a Professor of Health Education in the Department of Adult Counseling, Health, and Vocational Education at Kent State University. She received her D.Ed. and M.Ed. in Health Education from The Pennsylvania State University and earned her undergraduate degree from Lock Haven University, also in Pennsylvania. She has a Permanent Teaching Certificate in health and physical education in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (Grades K-12) and is a Certified Health Education Specialist. Dr. Symons received the Distinguished Service Award from the American School Health Association in 1994, and served as the President of that professional association in 2001-2002. She has received the Distinguished Teaching Award from Kent State University, and was recognized by the Commonwealth of Kentucky as an official “Kentucky Colonel” for collaborative health promotion initiatives on behalf of children and youth. Dr. Symons has taught health and physical education at grades 7-12, and returned to the ranks of public school teaching (grades K- 3 health education) during a sabbatical leave from her current position at Kent State University. In addition to publishing in refereed journals, and presenting at numerous state and national meetings, she collaborated in the development of "Children's Literature for Health Awareness" a resource text published by Scarecrow Press.

Susan K. Telljohann, HSD, CHES, is a Professor of Health Education at The University of Toledo. She received her doctoral degree in health sciences from Indiana University with an emphasis on school and college health education. Her experience in health education spans over 25 years, including health instruction from the junior high to the university level. She has done research and published over 60 articles on health education in professional journals, presented over 50 papers at professional conferences, and is the co-author of the HealthSmart K-12 curriculum and Teach and Reach health series published by ETR Associates. She served as the President of the American School Health Association from 2000-2001, was the Contributing Editor for the Teaching Ideas Column in the American Journal of Health Education, and has served on many professional health education committee throughout her professional career. She served on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Health Education and is on the National Health Education Standards Revision Committee. She is the recipient of several honors and awards, including the Distinguished Service Award from both the American School Health Association and the American Association of Health Education, The Howe Award from the American School Health Association, The University of Toledo Outstanding Teacher Award, the Phi Delta Kappa Educator of the Year Award, the Patty Outstanding Alumni Award from Indiana University, and the Ohio Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Outstanding Young Professional Award.
