Chosen by Book-Of-The-Month Club as a primary selection for an unprecedented second time! The story of the Constitutional Convention. One of America's preeminent biographers, Bowen brings to life the hot summer months of argument and agreement, debate and decision. In the summer of 1787, 55 men from differing backgrounds and beliefs came together in Philadelphia to draft our Constitution. James Madison, their secretary, describes in detail the conflict and contributions of Patrick Henry, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, and George Washington, to name a few, as these men of different upbringing and philosophies hammered out what would remain as the guiding principles for over 200 years of the United States government.

With respect to audio books, Dercum Audio consistently provides just such an accomplishment and was therefore selected for our enthusiastic and wholehearted recommendation."

From AudioFile
Catherine Drinker Bowen records the events of the stormy sessions of 1787, which produced the Constitution of the United States. The clear narration by Kristen Underwood gives the impression that Bowen herself is addressing the listener, after having mingled with the delegates, heard their arguments and witnessed this dramatic moment in history. The wealth of detail is prevented from becoming tiresome by this pleasant, expressive reading of a brilliant work. E.P.M. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Convention Classic!
By VA Duck
This book is one of the classics retelling the story of the Constitutional Convention of 1787. It was chosen as the model for the Bi-Centenial celebration of 1987 and distributed to high schools across the nation. It is now out of print, but easily gotten in used book form - and worth the effort.

It is a very thorough review of both the 55 men (39 of whom signed) and the complex issues that formed the Constitution during the hot Philadelphia summer of 1787. The author's prose is very easily followed making the read both informative and pleasurable. This is a great read to understand how the Constitution was made and to start your search for its meanings, or for the lives of its makers via hundreds of related books if that is your interest. Highly recommended and worth all five-stars.

Also see Clinton Rossiter's 1966 publication 1787: The Grand Convention for a similar, though more scholarly treatment of the subject, or David O. Stewart's The Summer of 1787: The Men Who Invented the Constitution (The Simon & Schuster America Collection) for a more recent (2008) review.
