Review
"Like feeling and reading Shakti in print. I read a little bit each day, then close my eyes and do the exercise, or ponder the thought. I let the warm sweet loving words and imagery wash and heal my many layers of self." - Lilias Folan
"Meditation teacher Roche (Meditation Made Easy) gives a contemporary interpretation of an ancient text: the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra. The book includes an incisive foreword by yoga luminary Shiva Rea, who observes that following even one of the titular sutra is 'enough to change a life.' Roche explains that he calls the text 'The Radiance Sutras' because the writings are so luminous: the compendium is set as conversation between two lovers, Shiva and Shakti, and covers breathing, tasting sleeping, making love, and sensory vehicles for “realizing your nature.” With each entry presented in Part One, Roche includes the Sanskrit script, transliteration, and pronunciation. Part Two, 'Invitations and Illuminations,' offers 112 meditation practices (yuktis) that guide readers toward falling in love with their own existence. Readers with advanced meditation experience will appreciate the intensity of Roche’s knowledge of and experience with this ancient text, and newcomers will be drawn to the beauty and radiance of the verses, as well as the accessibility and creativity of the practices."

From the Author
A LANGUAGE OF LOVEA Tantra is a conversation between the Goddess Who Is the Creative Power of the Universe and the God Who Is the Consciousness that Permeates Everywhere. For short, they call each other Devi and Bhairava, or Shakti and Shiva. They are lovers and inseparable partners, and one of their favorite places of dwelling is in the human heart. The text has the feeling of one richly experienced body speaking with love to another body.Their inquiry is about how to enter into the vibrant essence of the world with the dual balance of passion and detachment. The teaching emerges from their love-play, reminding us that from within our own hearts we are educated in the spirit of love. They lived this teaching. The secret pathways in the body and the flow of delicious energies are revealed in words that one friend or lover would speak to another. The text invites us to be at home in the universe by accepting every intense experience, every sensual delight, every ordinary moment, as a gateway to the divine. The conversation begins with Devi asking, "Beloved, tell me, how do I enter more deeply into the reality of the universe?" In reply, Bhairava describes 112 techniques for becoming enlightened through everyday life experience. Each of these techniques is a way of attending to the rhythms, pulsations, and sensuousness of the divine energy that we are made of and that flows through us always. As we engage with these meditation techniques, we are alerted to the presence of the sacred that permeates our bodies. All of these methods involve savoring the incredible intensity underlying the most common experiences. They work by activating the senses, by extending the range of the senses further into the inner and the outer world. The basic dynamics of life--breathing, falling asleep, waking up, walking, loving--are all used as gateways to alignment and enlightenment. Each meditation is a deep dive into aliveness, into the underlying reality of what life is. Balance is there at every step; the unshakable serenity of the depths is used as a foundation so that we can tolerate the electrifying vastness of the universe. We are invited to cross the threshold, to walk by the guardian of the gate, to face our terrors, and make our way into the immense and timeless mystery that is always calling. Many of these meditation techniques are surprisingly informal: Notice a powerful emotion, sensation, or desire, and enter into that awareness with total abandon, so that you go with it right into the root movement of the universe. When making love, put your aware- ness into the flame of passion pulsating through the body and become that flame. Falling asleep, pay attention to the transition from waking consciousness to unconsciousness, and catch a glimpse of what con- sciousness itself is. Or go outside on a moonless night and simply merge with the darkness and vastness of space. The text also describes what we think of as traditional yoga medita- tions--ways of savoring breath, sound, and internal luminosity. The intimacy with the self implied in these teachings means that tantra is not a set of techniques imposed from outside. Rather, the method emerges naturally from one's relationship with the self and with life. Lose yourself in intense experience, and find your Self. In this text, the word yoga is used in its etymological sense, "the act of joining, linking together." Yoga is connecting--connecting all the elements and levels of your being. The tone of the text is playful and exploratory--jump in and feel everything. Lila is Sanskrit for "play," "amusement," and the sense that the universe has been manifested as an act of play by the divine. Through play, find your way. In play, find freedom, revelation, illumination.

FOREWORD BY SHIVA REA
In your hands, you hold a treasure. The Radiance Sutras, the life-work of beloved writer and teacher
Lorin Roche, is a contemporary interpretation of the timeless, universal meditations of the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra. The 112 con- templative meditations known as both yuktis and dharanas unfold as a sacred exchange between the divine masculine as Shiva, or Bhairava, and the divine feminine as Shakti, or Bhairavi. This sacred teaching was revered by the great sages of tantra, including Kshemaraja in the 11th century through this last century's yoga masters Swami Lakshman Joo, the yogini Lalita Devi, and Swami Muktananda. The Vijnana Bhairava Tantra provides a way into the universal realization of divine embodiment that is developed fully within the tantras. Universal, sensual, very human experiences such as breath- ing, tasting, seeing, waking up, sleeping, getting angry, and making love become vehicles for realizing your nature. This happens at a deep level of vibration through the living current, spanda shakti, the pulsating source of consciousness of the early Trika-Krama lineages of tantra that knew of the quantum wave long before modern physics.Lorin has brought the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra alive for a wide audience in a way similar to how Coleman Barks revived the poetry of the great Sufi teacher, Jelauddin Rumi. These poetic interpretations have brought the vibratory wisdom of the tantras to the most neglected places within Western embodiment, as Lorin breathes a rhythm and life to lan- guage through his own realization. He has opened a doorway into the tantric realization of the divya deha, the divine body, the shimmering flow of embodied consciousness manifesting as Shakti and returning to infinite potency as Shiva.

a luminous book
By Tesa
This luminous book is one of my most treasured possessions. It's much more than a book. It's a collection of rare and precious gems, each of them a portal into presence, an invitation to experience all aspects of life more fully by connecting with your life force with all your senses. In Lorin Roche's words, the book is about "full body spirituality, being at home in the universe, and techniques for accepting every breath, sensual experience, and emotion as a doorway into deep and intimate contact with the energies of life."
I fell in love with the Radiance Sutras in 2006 during a yoga teacher training with Shiva Rea. We were lying down in a deeply relaxed state at the end of class, when she started reading sutra 26 to us. I got mesmerized both by the slow rhythm and sensual tone of her voice, and by the sheer beauty of that sutra which opens with these lines:
"The one who is at play everywhere said:
There is a place in the heart where everything meets.
Go there if you want to find me.
Mind, soul, senses, eternity, all are there.
Are you there?"
And all of a sudden, I was! Since then, I have learned many of these sutras by heart. I love what happens to me whenever I spend time reading or reciting them. Each sutra is an invitation to enter the body fully and let the deepening of that connection naturally expand one's sense of self beyond the boundaries of skin, and the constrictions of identity and personality. They keep giving me opportunities to feel and experience my inner body and subtle energy while moving through life, walking, playing, working, and dealing with day-to-day curve balls. They have literally changed the way I experience `reality.'
I take them on walks and travels, bring them into my yoga practice, and share them with friends. They make my day, every day.
If you want to taste a few of them, you can read some of the sutras on Lorin Roche's website, listen to a few of them on Soundcloud, or google the author's stunning commentaries of this text in the LA yoga magazine.
Be prepared to fall in love!

Not a translation!
By Christopher D. Wallis
The Radiance Sutras is a book by Lorin Roche, published by Sounds True. It consists of poems inspired by a sacred scripture of the Kaula Trika branch of Śaiva Tantra, a scripture called the Vijāna-bhairava-tantra or "Scripture of the Wisdom-Bhairava". Unfortunately, people here are assuming that the English poems in the book are translations of the Sanskrit verses that they are juxtaposed with. In fact, they are not translations, but rather poetry inspired by translations, since the author of the book cannot read the original Sanskrit. This is not a problem (and indeed many of the poems are beautiful) except for the fact that unlike Coleman Barks he nowhere admits that he knows nothing of the rules of Sanskrit grammar (vyākarana), and the reader is not informed in the introduction that the English text is not a translation of the Sanskrit verses it is presented alongside! This strikes me as a lack of integrity on the part of the author and/or publisher.
You can see for yourself by comparing Roche's poems to my literal translations of a few of the verses:
The Goddess said: “O Lord, I have heard the entire teaching of the Trika that has arisen from our union, in scriptures of ever greater essentiality, but my doubts have not yet dissolved. What is the true nature [of Reality], O Lord?" (vv. 1-2)
. . .
"O god of gods whose symbol is the trident and whose ornaments are made from human skulls, answer me this in such a way that I can completely understand it:
How is this state of absolute fullness of God--beyond space, time, and locality, impossible to represent conceptually--attained? By what means can one enter into it? And how does the Supreme Goddess (Parā Devī) become that [entryway], O Bhairava?" vv. 22-23
Bhairava replied:
"The emission of the breath is itself the Supreme [Goddess]. Prāna rises up and apāna--the movement into individual selfhood--goes down; [therefore] let the breath be your mantra. By nourishing the two points where the inbreath and outbreath arise, the state of inner fullness [is revealed]." (v. 24)
(Where "nourishing the two points" means pausing the breath at the end of each inhale and exhale and abiding in stillness.) As you can see by looking in the book, the poem Lorin has written (verse 24, the first of his so-called "Yukti verses") is not unrelated to the real meaning of the verse; indeed, it strikes me as a very fine poetic commentary on the verse. But it seems bizarre not to include that which he is commenting on, i.e. the actual verse itself, translated above. As a scholar-practitioner in the Trika lineage myself, I find it sad that Lorin has chosen to excise the words of the original author and appropriate their authority to himself. The Vijāna-bhairava-tantra is a sacred scripture, and if Lorin had respected the words of the original but added his beautiful poems as commentary, then I would praise this book highly and give it five stars.
Lovers of spiritual poetry will find much to delight them here; but those looking to learn the 112 meditation & awareness cultivation practices that the original text contains will be disappointed to find only allusions to those practices, without literal translations of the verses to support their understanding.
