Reality Based Bug Out Book

Realistic Bug Out Bag by Max Cooper is definitely one of the better bug out bag
books available. There are a flood of books on the topic with most being very
short in length, quality, and insight. Although I am no stranger to the topic of
bug out bags I picked up a lot of gems in this book. Cooper hits the nail on the
head by reinforcing the idea that you may need to bug out on foot for a host of
reasons. Because of this, not only must your bag be light but you have to be in
condition to walk for an unknown period of time. Too many books focus solely on
lists of items to put in your bag without much insight or consideration of other
factors. This book is very “reality” based which cannot be overlooked especially
if you ever need to bug out on foot.
Aspects about this book that I like include:
+ The focus is on reality and not theory
+ Provides excellent advice on how to test your ability and conditioning
+ Discusses different variables that can impact your ability to effectively bug
out
+ Advocates using written goals and provides a resource (I have yet to find
another BOB book that focuses on using goals – great concept)
+ Stresses that food is a necessary component of your bug out bag even though it
is possible to survive up to 30 days without food
+ Provides a different approach to your actual bag. Many books focus on blending
in but Cooper provides another option.
+ Has a 21 question bug out assessment to keep you focused on your abilities and
needs
+ Full of valuable nuggets of information that you may not have previously
thought about
+ Talks about the realities of bugging out with children and the elderly
+ Provides a list of resources
+ Good use of photos
Overall Assessment:
Realistic Bug Out Bag by Max Cooper is one of the best bug out books that I have
read on the topic and I have read a lot. I have learned that the subject of bug
out bags, preparedness, every day carry, etc. is so large and diverse that one
book is not going to hit on every possible topic. The same goes for this book.
But, if you are looking for a truly realistic view of bugging out this book is
your resource.

Review Title: Eye Opening

Realistic Bug Out Bag has been an eye opening book for me and has caused me to re-evaluate my bug out bag set-up. The reality of my bag is that it is too heavy which is fine if I can use my vehicle but will not work if I need to carry the bag for even a short distance. I have always assumed that I will just throw my BOB in my vehicle and hit the road. I am now going to redo my BOB to keep it to a manageable weight that I can actually carry. But, I am also going to keep other items stored in my vehicle, separate from my bag, just in case I can use my vehicle. As far as gear goes I also made some incorrect assumptions and was carrying way too much stuff that I thought I needed. This book has provided me a different perspective that will allow me to modify my set up to one that will work for me.

but there were some items that were good suggestions for additions to a bag

I got this for a reference to update my own bag. I still have all of the basic items, but there were some items that were good suggestions for additions to a bag. This was use full for me and may prove to be a great help for those that have not put a bug out bag together in the past. The book provides a very good basic knowledge on how to stuff your bag.
