Performing Glam Rock Review

I recommend this book to rock music aficionados who hunger for deeper analysis and more thoughtful work than is the typical fare for books about this genre. It helps to have some interest or fond memories for glam rock, but the chapters about performers one may not know that well or never cared for (e.g., Suzie Quatro, for me) are as compelling as those about ones personal faves. While some of the discussion may be a tad academic for the casual reader, I urge the casual reader to read on, because he will learn something and be entertained. The author is well aware that writing a book is a performance of sorts, and does not ignore his obligation to keep the reader entertained even as some sophisticated and/or obscure concepts are dealt with.

Defining this moment in rock music

Glam Rock was a short lived moment in popular music that essentially lasted only about five or six years, say from 1970 to 1975. In 1970 we were long past the time when Ed Sullivan would only show Elvis from the waist up. The pill has made basic changes in the outlook of the young towards sex. Here in the US, the Viet Nam war, Watergate and Kent state were changing the view of the people.

In music the time was ripe for a change and a series of musicians did that with a new form of rock that featured extremely theatrical performances with outrageous (for the time) costume, makeup and sets. This was called Glam Rock. It drew upon the history of previous styles of rock and added a theatrical aspect to music that was minimally modified.

This book traces the history of Glam Rock from its beginnings with T. Rex and goes through the advent of Suzi Quatro. It explains what Glam Rock was and a bit about how it evolved into the next phase of music.

Better Hang on to Yourself

Although I've only recently begun to read up on performance studies, it seems to me that Auslander has chosen a particularly illustrative case study in glam rock. Within a genre so explicitly focused on the construction and performance of identity, it's actually a bit surprising that this book hadn't already been written.

While Auslander comes from the performance studies tradition, Performing Glam Rock also serves as a great overview of the genre. The book includes a great deal of history, making it a worthwhile read for anyone interested in the genre. The big guns are profiled in depth to illustrate the glam's traits: Bolan (style), Bowie (theatricality), Roxy Music (gender) and Suzi Quatro (more gender, specifically female masculinity).

Overall, an accessible and compelling read.

Meanwhile, methods of analysis have significantly evolved, principally due to computer applications and new ways of thinking and approaching old problems. Thus, it becomes necessary to come up with a new scientific approach to tackle management and engineering aspects of railways, to understand in-depth the origins and inter-relationships of the various situations and phenomena and to suggest the appropriate methods and solutions to solve the various emerging problems.

This book aims to cover the need for a new scientific approach for railways. It is intended to be of use to railway managers, economists and engineers, consulting economists and engineers, students of schools of engineering, transportation, economics, and management. The book is divided into three parts, which deal successively with management, track, and rolling stock, environment and safety. Each chapter of the book contains the necessary theoretical analysis of the phenomena studied, the recommended solutions, applications, charts and design of the specific railway component. In this way, both the requirement for a theoretical analysis is met, and the need of the railway manager and engineer for tables, nomographs, regulations, etc. is satisfied. Railways in Europe have separated activities of infrastructure from those of operation. In other parts of the world, however, railways remain unified. The book addresses both situations (separated and unified railways). Railways present great differences in their technologies. Something may be valid for one such technology, but not for another. To overcome this problem, regulations of the International Union of Railways (UIC) as well as European Standardization (CEN) and European Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSIs) have been used to the greatest extent possible. Whenever a specific technology or method is presented, the limits of its application are clearly emphasized.

Rather Dark but Very Affecting First Episode in Serial

Be aware that this is the first episode in a serial story. If you find an (as I write this) uncompleted story frustrating, you may want to wait until more of them are out.

That said, this is an excellent beginning to what promises to be a somewhat dark but very satisfying romance. It's not a happy story at this point - I found myself badly affected by Skye's behaviors, trained into him by years of abuse, and the way that Liam is at this point oblivious to the depth of that abuse - which is a credit to the author. I was also impressed with the way the author sketched out Skye's fears and hinted at his experiences without falling into over-the-top angst. She does a better job avoiding overly florid language than I am doing with this review.

If she can keep up the tone and pace without making this into a mere quick'n'easy tale of redemption - and at this point I think she can - then I look forward to an outstanding story at the end of the serial.

it ends before it begins

This is written better than most, edited better than most and much more well thought of than most.
There is a problem though and that is its main character, Skye: as soon as he is caught, he loses it. Every trace of the self-determining, strong-willed loner evaporates into a submissive fool too afraid to breathe. He is not coping waiting for an opportunity to be free again, he just surrenders and that ends the story before it can begin.
That this is just a very short first (free) instalment in a series of very short (but quite expensive) instalments does not help any.

Don't expect a resolution at the end of this book

I wouldn't call it a cliffhanger, but there is definitely a book 2. It picks up where the first story ends. I really enjoyed this story. It was told from the perspectives of the two MCs. Initially it was a bit confusing because they think they know what they want from each other and both are mistaken. There is a lot of miscommunication going on in this story. Even when they try to have a mostly one sided discussion matters are confused even more.

We learn a lot of new lore about Alphas and Omegas. I greatly enjoy learning new things. I found myself rooting for the two of them, but you don't know what will happen. I felt so sorry for Skye the Omega. He was just trying trying to survive in a harsh world that kept him on the run and on guard constantly. His counterpart Alpha wanted to do what was right as he had learned in his pack, but his instincts kept getting him in trouble.

This is definite book for fans of lone Omegas. I can't wait to see what happens. I already have Book 2.

This is such a good book, provides a different way to think about how to reach and teach students who are struggling behaviorally. Dr. Greene has an approachable quality that makes it seem possible to support any student, regardless of struggle, in making safe and needed changes. Collaborative Problem Solving is a great approach.

Gives Parents Hope

“Parents of behaviorally challenging kids know a thing or two about feeling ostracized. They know they’re blamed for their child’s challenging behavior, despite the fact that they have other children who are well behaved. They don’t want to be defensive, but feeling blamed doesn’t make that any easier. They want to trust that their child is being well treated at school, but there are many signs to the contrary. Whatever the school is doing isn’t working – their child is still on the receiving end of countless counseling sessions, detentions, suspensions and worse – but the parents feel powerless to do anything about it.”

This paragraph in “Lost & Found” might be the most insightful and powerful paragraph I’ve ever read. This paragraph sums up the life my husband and I are currently leading when it comes to our child. In one of the most frustrating, worrisome and stressful situations I’ve ever experienced - “Lost & Found” gave me some hope. Hope that my child’s behavior is not due to choices made, or personality issues – but because of a lack of skills to cope with or process certain situations. Dr. Greene posits that “Kids do well if they can. …if the kid could do well, he would do well, and that if he’s not doing well, he must be lacking the skills to do well.”

He also notes that rarely, if ever, do the punitive actions taken by schools help the situation. They remove the child from the situation briefly, but when s/he comes back, the situation is still the same, if not worse.

He gives advice on using a tool called ASLUP (Assessment of Lagging Skills and Unsolved Problems) so that teachers and parents can best identify where skills need to be taught that then will help change behavior. It is very detailed and in depth and really gets to the heart of issues.

School is out for the summer (thank GOODNESS) – but when it is back in session – I hope to be able to use this advice and that tool to make my child’s school life dramatically better.

Easy to read but study guide too detailed for CCM exam

I bought this book back in March to prepare for the CCM exam this month in August. I passed but I agree with some of the other reviewers who stated that: 1) a lot of the practice questions in this study guide were stated in very confusing ways and also were worded nothing like the actual CCM exam questions, 2) the study guide was very detailed but the CCM exam questions seemed more general, & 3) some of the concepts on the exam weren't covered enough in this book it seemed. I did purchase a CCMC practice exam that had retired questions so at least I had some an idea of the types of questions that I would encounter on the actual exam. I felt like I studied in too much detail the health care reimbursement section (which was the largest section in this book) when I could have spent that time focusing on case management concepts & healthcare management/delivery. Like I said, this book was easy to read/follow and did have a lot of detailed information to form a solid knowledge base, and I'm sure without it I wouldn't have passed. However, I think there's probably better study guides out there.

The book gives you on-line access to hundreds of study questions, which helps the learner
understand the information in each chapter. I would highly recommend this book as a study tool.

A serious book!!

Fortunately, this is not the typical High Speed Newtworks book. Unlike most authors, Stallings goes as deep as required. Beginning with descriptions for ATM and high speed LANs, the book explain how to modelate and estimate the actual network performance, by using statistics models. (An overview of probability and stochastic processes is included).
The mechanisms for improve the network performance (as different queueing strategies), and managing network congestion are explained.
Some IP related topics (routinng protocols, RSVP, Multicast)are also included.
Part 7 (optional for most readers) is concerned with compression and information theory (JPEG and MPEG algorithms are explained).
As you see, a serious book, not a "bubbleware" book.

BAD book

if u want to study high speed networking then please dont buy this book and waste your money. there are many other books which cover the same areas in equal detail. this book will not only confuse you but it will also muddle the existing concepts that u had in mind... stallings is a good writer.. he has written good books in the past.. but this time he has not come up to the level which is expected from him.

Good mathematical analysis

This is a copy from the famous book of Stallings "data and computer networks".
Even the diagrams are the same, but this book does have a tremendous amoubt of numerical computations, so you can satisfy the mathematicians in you. Now that I have had a course in data communication where the other book I mentioned above was used, I understand this book.
This book is definitly not to be the 1st book on datacom, definitely the 2nd. This is an extremely boring book though, it does not invite you to read it, even though it has some very interesting topics in it.

Perfect read

I bought this book following a friend's recommendation. it was what I expected and more. I now feel confident about breast feeding and it cleared many doubts that I had.

Carlos Gonzalez has a wonderful approach to "baby matters", empowering women to follow their hearts and instincts and trust their gut.

A must-have resource for new breastfeeding mothers.

If you are committed to breastfeeding, keep a copy of this book on hand. It's supportive, and tells you the science of how your breasts work so you can make choices that make sense for you and your baby to keep your milk supply up, instead of focusing on anecdotal tales you find on the internet. Stop reading the internet for your breastfeeding woes and read this book instead, at least first! I wish I'd read it before my baby arrived to better deal with those first few months, but even when I got a copy of it several months in I found it helpful!
